At 4.07 that was my paper round in the early '70s. Worked for Barkers on Smithdown Road, also remember the Liverpool Show, biggest tents I've ever seen, they where massive!
I haven't lived in Liverpool since 1981, however my spies who still live there tell me it was probably William Holt/James Holt of the shipping line fame. They also donated Sudley fields along with Sudley house in Aigburth to the people of Liverpool.
I think the benefactor was Phillip Holt of the famous shipping family, I don't know the centenary question but Prince Alfred Lane was once called Cow Lane as cattle were led to the park from the local areas to graze there but the lane was renamed for the visit of queen Victoria's sons visit that is also wete the pub got it's name, i have one photo grainy photo of his visit Jeff
Hi Jeff, I haven't got a clue, but remember the Liverpool show climbing over the fence to get in,but I always thought as it was given to the city of Liverpool by a mystery doner nothing could ever be built in the park via a covenants but a lot of sporting facilities have been built have you heard of this before, have to wait till Thursday for answer thanks Jeff 👍
As a matter of interest I always thought the same thing applied to Stanley Park Walton. I was always surprised about the plans Liverpool FC once had, to build a new stadium on Stanley Park.
Question 1 I think Jeff it was Philip Holt. Wasn’t there Jeff for the Liverpool show bit before my time. I have heard though Jeff there was a big thing there known as the exhibition
The Liverpool Exhibitions were held by Wavertree Park between Edge Lane and Wavertree Rd where Roscoe's Botanic park was moved to,The site later was the grounds of Liverpool tram later bus depot and Littlewoods building
Bluecoat boys had to do a lap of the Mystery for PE whilst the " teacher" would use binoculars to make sure nobody cut corners. Liverpool Show... I remember the Police demonstrating the viciousness of their attack dogs whilst the White Helmets flopped their bikes through lighter fluid and the Red Devils' parachutes missed the X. I also saw some tin foil masquerading rather accurately as a replica of the Lunar Lander, and some "genuine moon rock". More positively I learned the basics of flower arranging. Peace ❤️
Did it have Moon written all the way through it? I've seen the "lander", it looked like something a homeless person made from junk he found in a skip to sleep in a shop doorway. I remember the motorbike display team jumping through hoops of fire, and the parachute team The Red Devils I think they were called. Our school run, the sports teacher ran with us, through The Black Woods and back to Gateacre Comp so there was no slacking.
I ran for the Liverpool Blue Coat school (a place I detested from year one, to the day I left) in the mystery against some school. At the end of the race I was so tired I fell into some dog dirt.
@@johndavies1506 It was rather disfunctional in many ways. A good number of my teachers would go down now for what was considered normal behaviour in 1970s
@@strawberryfields1149 There was one teacher in particular who was thrown out of the school for violence. For years after I left I always kept my eyes open for him on the street.. Never mind it's many years ago now.
