hi.! 😀😉🤗💛 Your video is amazing!🇯🇵😀😊🤗❤️ love Japanese manga, anime and Samurai TV!🇯🇵🤩😃😚🤗💛 At the age of 17, I studied abroad in Osaka, Japan for a year! Life in Osaka has completely different customs and cultures, so I enjoyed it very much! The whole Japanese family during my homestay was very warm and took care of me! All the Japanese were very warm and kind! All the Japanese food in Osaka is delicious and will bring back memories! During my homestay, I and my homestay family took me to sightseeing spots such as Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Hyogo, Wakayama, Mie, Shiga, Okayama, Hiroshima and hot springs! And I made a lot of Japanese friends! I still keep in touch with my homestay family and Japanese friends frequently!🇯🇵😀😊🤗❤️ see u 😀😉🤗💛

You know the food is bad when you consider eating the cardboard packaging instead. It always looked fairly decent, i cant even imagine how bad it must have tasted! Also that cursed egg looked like a bigger version of those Haribo „fried eggs“ :‘D Glad to have you back Norm!

Well Japan is known for their fake food models/samples so I imagine that while it can look fantastic, his food probably tastes like it was fake too.

That egg was probably prepared in some kind of ring mold (that’s how McDonald’s gets its egg discs on their McMuffins). It doesn’t flop over because its on the thicker side and probably was overcooked.

I think all 3 of my trips to Japan have been to hotels like this, cheap and cheerful but thankfully the food was better :D I only went there to sleep, didn't have much intention of flying halfway around the World to spend too much time in my room. Sounds like the last few weeks have just been multiple levels of hell for you Norm, things can only get better mate. Stay strong and positive. Thanks for sharing.

What a difference a few weeks makes. I had to go to back to Japan in March this year only a few weeks after you posted this video, and for an urgent family matter of my own, but they had just lifted the hotel quarantine requirement so I did not need to go through that mess. My folks are not Japanese, but have lived in Japan close to 40 years, are in their mid 80s, and have permanent Japanese residency visas there. The hoops and endless red tape myself and my other gaijin siblings had to go through just in order to visit my mom who was going in for open heart surgery was absolutely crazy. (FYI, surgery was successful and she is now well on the way to recovery). I only just recently discovered your channel, and am loving the content. I grew up in Japan from age 9-18, and it is so cool to "go back to Japan" vicariously through all of your videos. Keep up the awesome work.

Do you know what I like about these videos and Japanese living spaces in general? The fact that they all have a desk. It just sits really well with me. How Japanese people factor productivity into their daily lives by having a specific place to be productive. I like that.

I’m terribly sorry for your loss. I’ve lost almost all my family, parents and grandparents included, and it never gets easier. All that aside, I’d go flippin bonkers in that room! Holy shit. And that egg looks like something that comes in children’s kitchen/cooking “toys”. I hope that things get better and I look forward to all your new adventures this year!!

I had a surprisingly similar experience quarantining at my university in the US! There was nobody to accept deliveries for us and we had to pay for the food they provided. We also had to remember to order it by a certain time every day or we got nothing. Every day they basically gave us a bagel and two cups of ramen for like 15 or 20 bucks. I ended up breaking the rules and getting delivery 😂

Universities… the bane of the US. Remember your freedoms. No other country provides it. Because you could find yourself living without them one day and nowhere to go to get them back.

Tbh their food doesn’t even sound like it satisfies minimum calorie intake for an adult, so it’s interesting how they justify that while not enabling you to supplement it in any way

Sorry for your loss. I hope the rest of your quarantine is significantly more pleasant. As for anyone else stuck in a similar situation with cold food and no microwave - try filling the bathroom sink with water that is warm (if eating right out of plastic containers as we don't want to melt the plastic) or hot (if the hotel offers heat-safe plates/cups) and let the food sit in the sink for a while. If possible, cover the sink with a shower curtain or something that could help trap the heat in the sink. Hopefully that will warm up the food a bit! I'd also mix a teaspoon of hot water to the rice if it was super dry and cold.

It's good you were able to spend time with your family. I'm sorry you're dealing with the quarantine hotel on top of dealing with loss. It's nice to see that you're able to turn your grief towards positivity and a renewed vigor for life, and that you have great friends and family to help you through this time. May you continue to find comfort and healing. I'll be praying for you and your family.

I'm so sorry for your loss 😔 My hubby did 2 weeks isolation in a pretty horrible hotel in Korea, and every meal was more or less the same, and everything was cold, including the soup. He eventually asked for western vegetarian for a change, and he was getting salad with 1/4 banana (yes really) for breakfast lol. It was disastrous, and everything tasted awful. He wasn't allowed any food delivery service either. Fortunately we'd packed Pot Noodles, protein bars and stuff like that, so he rationed it out over 2 weeks. Not ideal for a diabetic either, when you're not eating properly! Why are these hotels being allowed to serve such awful food? It's not right!

In every prefecture in the country, there have been many complaints about the food, saying, 'Isn't it a middleman? In particular, there has been a string of complaints about APA-affiliated hotels that are designated as convalescent hotels throughout the country," said a Cabinet Office official.

Very sorry to hear about your loss. Glad to see you back and making great content. And THANK YOU for calling out APA. I recall last time I was in Japan and was pretty shocked at the literature they had in the room. While the food sucks (the way you described it I could taste how bad it was), I gotta give them credit for providing it for free, and that room ain't too shabby. This is a super useful video for anyone who might have to travel to Japan soon!

My deepest condolences. This was a great video and I'm so ... shocked every time I watch a quarantine video and people go on about how bad the food is - usually Japan does bento and convenience food really well! I'm glad that while the circumstances were sad - that you were able to be with family and please never, ever feel the need to apologize - mental health, family and other important things will always take priority. We'll be here waiting. Glad you're back in Japan safe and hope the rest of quarantine was better than this.

I've actually been watching all of your old videos, something I do when I really enjoy a recent channel I'm subbed to; it's been fun watching the old Tokyo Tuesdays and the shamisen videos, so interesting to see where you started and how your film-making & storytelling have evolved. Those timelapses really pinpointed the lonely beauty that can be seen from a tiny hotel room (the shot of the kids playing some sport really hit for some reason, humans so close yet so far). I hope you're doing better, Norm, or as well as can be. On loss, my grandma used to say, it doesn't get better but it does get different. Which has always comforted me in a non-sugar-coating way.

The APA brand is so recognizable! I always wondered what a quarantine stay at the hotel is like, so thank you, much appreciated. Sorry that you had to go through all of this though, I think that these meals actually were meant to be heated! And probably the view itself was something to be grateful for, other APA hotels have windows facing a wall... or at least I know one that does!

I'm really sorry to hear of your loss Norm, and please don't apologise. The interaction you have with your audience is second-to-none and it shows in how many people DMed you asking if you were okay. It's always important to look after yourself and attend to your own needs. As I got told once "you can't help others if you're unable to help the one person you know most, yourself". It sounds like you've had great support from friends and a healthy mindset to deal with your own issues first. Although I'm glad to see you back and even when restricted to the confines of a shoebox of a room, you can still make entertaining and informative videos.

Welcome back! Glad to see you are healthy and safe. Loss is different for everyone and never appologize for taking needed time for yourself. When you have the energy and are ready to explore we are with you! The egg though...maybe leave that behind 😉

The first time I went to Japan I shared a room just like this with a friend and man was it cramped. Thankfully we didn't spend much time in it besides to sleep but my group of friends all gathered in there to watch GOT when S was airing, it was a good time lol

I am glad that this part of entering Japan is over! It feels like a prison. A lost is never easy, especially if you are not expecting. You have built a great community and we will always send our love and support your way Norm.
