The good , The bad , the ugly about living in Chiang Mai .Most of you know I dont sugar coat anything . In this video which starts out on Hwy 106 north of Rim Ping Condo , I explain the good points of living here in Chiangmai, which is most of the video. There are only a couple of bad issues ,which you ll find the same in most major cities . The ugly part is specific to Chiangmai I will talk about that as well . Chiangmai gets in your blood and its a very easy place to call home , even as an expat .

Prior to the mid-eighties, high-rise buildings were illegal here. The Rimping Condo was controversial and called "the building that ruins the environment" and some famous monk I forget his name, tried to halt its construction but there were big plans for the coming condo boom. Then they ended up mostly vacant and hard to sell, so hard to sell that they passed a new law allowing Farang to own condos.

Thanks so much for the walk around my old digs. I have two problems with Chiangmai. Food! I gained 60 lbs living there. Lost it since. The real problem is air pollution. We had to leave on Doctor advice. My wife had repeated bronchitis that disappeared on return to Florida. When you live there you wish to deny the damage as it is such a happy place to live. When you understand that the 2.5u particles in the air pollution enter your bloodstream and Rips up your innards it gets hard to justify the harm to your body. Nicest people I’ve found. Money goes a long way.

Of course the solution is to take a vacation during smoke season. My favorite destination is Krabi. High season is ending and a large room with ac, a fridge and river view is very affordable. Most of the times i listen to Westerners from the Philippines and Thailand saying the least amount to live in those two countries is 1500 US dollars. Before i went to my wife in the Philippines, she found a 2 bedrooms house made of bamboo and cement for 3500 pesos which was 70 US dollars at that time. Beautiful house in fence in a very good location. My wife used to cook a lot so we don't go out that much to ear out. We bought our fish and shrimps from the river. We lived comfortably and we really enjoyed at that time. We refused to live western style. By the way i am originally from West Africa and i am married to filipina. Now we built a 30,000 USD 3 bedrooms house in Bohol Philippines

With my (now) wife being a primary school teacher, I always spent 2 or 3 days each week acting as her teaching assistant. Apart from it being great fun, the other teachers got to know me, as did the children. Then the children would point me out to their parents, so they got to know me. All of which meant that in the local area I was never charged "tourist price", and I'm always accepted as an adopted resident . . . Which after 18 years ought to be the case anyway :) It is occasionally a bit confusing now when a pretty 20-something young lady walks up and greets me by name, though 555

Very good video. Smoke season is the only reason that I wouldn't consider staying in Chiang Mai, but I see from the video that you love the city so much that you moved back. Is that because it's not as bad as it seems? In my head because I haven't experienced it, I think I would find it hard to feel comfortable living in a city that for 4 - 6 months a year, it's difficult to breath, the air in general is bad for my health, and I would feel like a prisoner in my own home as I would try to avoid going outside as much as possible. I love living in Thailand, but my husband was just ok with it. He said that it was very hard to find people who speak English compared to Philippines. I had a Thai best friend when I lived there who was educated in Texas A&M but moved back to Thailand to be close to family. She told me English was just an elective in their senior year. In the Philippines, you learn to speak English as a small girl. Sometimes, you are look down if you don't. More Koreans are flocking the Philippines to learn to speak English. It did not bother me if I struggle to find someone for english translator. It was the same thing when my husband worked in Dusseldorf, Germany for 3 years. Thai people are very friendly to me. For all I know, my friend told me that they Thai locals knew I was a farang because I wore shorts everyday. I am not afraid to get dark. LOL!!! When my husband conduced a meeting at IBM BKK, he needed sometimes an interpreter. My husband is also Filipino if you are wondering. I can live in Thailand, but maybe not the Philippines. I am set in my own ways that I will have a culture shock since I grew up in SF. CA. In fact, when I lived in BKK, IBM, sent me to school to learn to speak Thai.
