Living In Hawaii And Not Hawaiian??? CONCERNS, BEING BLACK, AND MORE

Addressing some people concerns of wondering if Hawaiian people will like them or discriminate against them because they're not from Hawaii. All Hawaiians I've met have been accepting to me and have been genuine good people. I would say overall not to worry because only 10% of the population in Hawaii are actually Hawaiian or Pacific Islander. The majority of the population in Hawaii is Asian (38%).

I'm from Maui and in 2003 me and bunch of my boys would often go to the Maui community coledge dorms at night to meet n drink with the people living there. There was this one black guy from Brooklyn living there that me n my boys really connected with, our friendship grew and he is one of my best friends today. Not only did he meet us while living at the dorms, he also met a girl who would later become his wife. My boy came for college and never left, he's now married with 3 beautiful kids, opened up his own health food bar that was such a hit that he opened up two more. I'm hapa ha'ole, half white n half Hawaiian, I also have family here that's Hawaiian n black mix. If u ever read this, sorry for leaving a novel, but u made me want to share that. Aloha bro!

@@SantiagoLeimans What about the KILL WHITE PEOPLE DAY? How is the "Kill a Haole" day currently practiced in Hawaii and why does it continue? 3 Answers Andy Narimatsu , born and raised in Hawaii. Lived there from 1999-2021 Answered 1 year ago · Author has 2.8K answers and 11.9M answer views These are one of the questions that have always perplexed me. Nobody I’ve ever met in real life have ever reported experiencing such a thing, and I’ve never once heard anything of that sort, despite going to one of the larger public schools on Oahu, though things may have been different 30+ years ago. So I think it’s safe to say, no. 611 views View upvotes 6 Related Questions (More Answers Below) Is there a lot of racism in Hawaii? 34,503 Views What is it like to live and work in Hawaii as a haole? 4,023 Views What is the worst thing about living on the Hawaiian islands? 98,857 Views Do white people suffer racism in Hawaii? 3,032 Views What don’t Mainlanders understand about living in Hawaii? 73,526 Views Josh Wells , Music Instructor at Musicians (2013-present) Answered 2 years ago · Author has 53 answers and 29.4K answer views I don’t believe it is in practice still today. “Kill Haole Day” was an annual tradition amongst public grade school students in Hawai’i during the 70’s-90’s. Haole (predominantly white) kids were targeted and beat up/harassed by their Native/Mixed-Hawaiian peers for one day out of the year. It wasn’t typically announced or made aware for the Haole students before the event. This was done to maximize the “Haole-killing” for the day. Public schools quickly made laws and took measures to prevent this tradition from continuing, but it took some time to implement fully because aggressors and their families considered it a beloved tradition. No Haoles were actually killed in these events, and the beatings were typically minimal harassment at worst. The entirety of the tradition is rooted in the long-term oppression and bastardization of Native Hawaiian culture and language since the monarchy. This is why many adult guardians and figures did not intervene when the event started. 779 views View upvotes 6 2 Lone Foxx Answered Aug 9, 2021 Its fascinating how much disinformation there is about Kill Haole Day. One reason people try and play it off as something that doesn’t happen or doesn’t happen anymore is because Hawaii is so dependent on tourism, so many people will straight out lie about the presence of extreme racism in Hawaii. I’ve been all over North America and I’ve never seen such racism as exists in Hawaii. I deal with racism on a daily basis and its ironic because I’m an Armenian Jew yet when the racist locals see me I’m Captain Cook. @@dustinmiller2775 That's like saying everyone is "black". Technically according to gnome studies we all come from the landmass that is called "Africa". So technically we are all "black". The reason "we" (hawaii non-white locals and hawaiians) don't like haoles much is their attitudes and how hawaii became a state. Popolos with the same attitudes have the same problems with "locals". We are used to having issues with haoles so we are automatically wary of them. Popolos obviously don't look like haoles and share similarities with many non-white locals so we are less wary of them right off the bat.

As a native Hawaiian it is important for people that come to Hawaii to be respectful of the land and culture. As long as you do this you should be fine but if you don’t it’s 50/50. Ultimately you shouldn’t travel if you don’t learn a little about the place your going the history and culture. If you can’t do this then you should stay home and don’t go outside of your local area. There is a dark history like many other cultures have experienced where you lose your rights or lands like the native Hawaiians are experiencing. Taking over a place imprisoning the queen then stealing the land from the natives to sell off for money will create hard feelings in any culture or place.

There are some locals and whites who have a 'chip' on their shoulder. Keep your ears open for racial talk. When you hear it, REJECT IT. You will then see how many are acting friendly, but are basically sneaky bigots. Hawaiian people are respectful, but there is a sub-culture of angry whites and locals. They are constantly looking for some angle regarding race, ethnicity, blacks, local girls, etc. AVOID PEOPLE WHO TALK RACE. PERIOD. If someone, anyone, brings up something racial, tell them you aren't interested in their stereotypes and move away from them. TRUST ME.

Yep, I agree. You can see and hear them coming. Some will act friendly, but eventually they will show you who they are. It's not just locals; I was on a large construction site and the whites were bringing up 'Aryan Nation' type talk and many found it offensive.

I married a Native Hawaiian whom comes from the royal family of Hawaii. I am multi-racial but I am basically "black" on the mainland. I experienced different.. Seems like the younger generations love White people and have kids with them etc. Their racism against me as a black person was very passive. His family just treated me like I wasn't there. And when they did address me it was more like they didn't even know what to say to me or felt like I was so different there was nothing to talk about. His family rarely if ever spoke to me directly if at all and would speak to him when they wanted me to know something. It was always something cultural, them automatically assuming I wasn't going to follow whatever rules they had. I was attacked harshly by one of his uncles and when I defended myself the entire family was on his side and the women took that as a opportunity to attack me to. His mother hated my guts and would make racial remarks about other black women , asking why they didn't have soft curly hair like me or looked presentable. She was ignorant and tolerated my existence. They were kind and heart warming to the mexican and white wives but never to me. Imagine going to family get togethers and you don't exist. They loved my kids though!!!! They look very polynesian and that was a shock to them... I am also partially chinese so I guess it helped in the DNA mixing process... As most hawaiians are asiatic. The younger people my age were super kind and friendly with me though, they loved my hair and gave me lots of compliments. But generations above me were very cruel and did not speak to me or want anything to do with me. If anything they tolerated me being there because they loved my husband and sometimes they couldn't even do that. Of course , don't expect your polynesian spouse to ever defend you.. Wont happen.. I noticed black men were treated better and I saw they had polynesian and asian wives. But the black women were not.

Living in the islands can be a hard transition for some. You sound like you're doing fine. You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned 'respect'. That's all anyone ever wants from visitors. You may not agree or like how the locals do things or understand why, but if you go in with an open mind and respect, you will do fine. Welcome to the islands! PS areas where there are more Black people are usually in and around military bases like Pearl Harbor, Hickam, Fort Shafter, Schofield, and Kaneohe. The Hawaiian's call Black people Popolo, taken from a dark berry. Terms Haole and Popolo are usually not derogatory terms but like all things depends on the context it is used. Good candid video.

To add to what Pamela said, respect is a huge thing in Hawaii. Respect the land, the people, your elders, etc. If you act like you are above everybody (high maka maka), then you will be treated badly by everyone. Like they say everybody is related in Hawaii. I was born and raised in Kaneohe, went to the only public high school there and saw some black people. The problem is I didn't know one girl was black until after I graduated and somebody brought up that she was black. I just thought she was a darker skinned local girl, because that's the way she acted. When I was in high school, I along with many others, were really dark skinned because we skipped school to go to the beach.

i agree pamela, but sometimes its not as simple as respect. it can be harder to do things and making freinds if your white in hawaii. and some still wont accept, although like i mentioned in my experience respect will get you a long ways in hawaii, it doesnt always get you to the finish line. especially if you need housing help or are poor etc.

I think Polynesians know that most black people didn’t choose to be Americans any more than Hawaiians did. Same with Asians and Portuguese in Hawai’i. They were brought here to work in the fields. And we also all face discrimination from Caucasians in the Mainland for being brown. Plus our Polynesian ancestors are likely a mix between African and Asian historically, based on language and genetics, so we should all be watching out for each other anyway. I’ve definitely known African Americans who grew up in Hawai’i who felt like they faced a lot of discrimination (like Obama, himself), but it’s nothing compared to the dislike of white people. There is definitely bias in favor of Pacific Islanders (and Asians) and against the colonizers in Hawai’i. I think black folks are just chillin’ in the middle.

As is common in the mainland backs and Asians seem to have some sort of static. I’ve lived here two years and that is my observation

to help you fix that hawaii was a sugar plantation field if you ever go visit the sugar plantation field thats where many cultures had to work together while that happened we created so many local dishes especially rice because; rice is another staple of hawaiis local culture we have so many things to offer here from the food (maybe its better from where u tasted it but thsi is hawaii version) the rules like leaving ur slippers off getting Lickins (spankings), hugging your aunties and uncles , and also cultural events like obon-festivals(usually from june-september), chinese new year(usually sometime in january and plus most of us who grew up here like locals used the chinese zodiac), and so on so we may not be the best but i mean as a local here would not wanna trade it anywhere else (except for the governemnt and shit which is terrible here)

Okay, I disagree with some of this. For one there are more than 10% Hawaiians. I get that there's a big amount of Asians but a lot of them are hapa bloods. Meaning, they have Hawaiian mixed within their blood. 2, there are quite a lot of black people. If not Black then brown. 3, It is very diverse in Hawaii. Most nationalities you can think of live in Hawaii, it just depends on where you are looking. 4, there is racsicim in Hawaii. However, not towards blacks but torwards white people. Even with white people who have lived in Hawaii their whole lives still get asked if they're from the mainland. 5, brown people are the majority of the islands. 6, the exceptance of foreigners is getting better due to military people coming in and out because locals meet them and are like "wow, they're not so bad". 7, Some locals are still mad with what happened with Queen Liliokalani and her imprisonment. Oh, and let's not forget the termination of their monarchy because of the U.S. 8, Teenagers and young adults are becoming more open with mainlanders because most of them move in Hawaii about the time their in school. So, they meet friends and blend into the culture. Who wants to know more?

I was one of the few white kids in elementary school there on Oahu. Was picked on everyday. Locals would try and pick fights with my dad if he went to a gas station. Mostly the youth. Eventually we left. We were nothing but respectful and I was a good kid. Besides that, Hawaii was beautiful and we did meet some nice folks. The term “howley” will forever ring in my brain. Unfortunately, you can thank your ancestors for that. I think haoles who decide to stay in Hawaiʻi would fair a lot better if they strongly advocated for deoccupation by the US government. Otherwise, Hawaiians will see you as a perpetuation of the problem. As sad as that may be, thatʻs the way things are. Iʻd recommend to other haoles that they try to right the wrongs of their ancestors, or do as you have done, and try finding a more accommodating place to live...

Mikael Wallgren you’re slightly right however it’s more of a nationality thing. Like if you’re a white American then Hawaiians tend to feel more annoyed by your presence than say a white German. Hey homie, just be nice and respectful. Never 4get, you are on a ISLAND! You will see the same people over and over agian! So if you act dumb, 100% of the time, everytime...you will see them again. IMO, the hardest thing people from the mainland have trouble adapting to, is the fact that you always see the same people. In the mainland you hardly see the same person twice. Barring friends and family ofcourse. What you have to understand is that here in Hawaii, yes there is a melting pot of ethnicities. And yes we clash from time to time, and yes we use awful stereotypes during those said clashes. But when it comes down to the all or nothing "dice roll" we are ALL from Hawaii and we back each other up. That mentality is based on our culture which every single one of us were(and still are) raised on. For example: Older people are always addressed as "Aunty" or "Uncle", always take off your slippers before going inside, only take what you going eat, if you use your car horn...make sure you ready for what may come out, after you pau(finish) one scrap(fight) shake hands win or lose. Because like I said we are on a ISLAND!!! You going see aunty and uncle, the person you blew your horn to, the person you fought, the home owners house you went into still wearing your slippers, the next day and the day after that! And we remember if you did wrong to us. Aloha

Hate to burst your bubble Suka, but....ah....um......95% of the population voted "Yes" to become a State in 1959. So Hawaii could suck on the breast of the USA. It was NOT "ugly", there were parades in the streets in celebration. SMH Similar to African Americans??? The percentage of "Hawaiians", or I guess in 2019 however you IDENTIFY yourself, is LESS THAN 5 PERCENT in Hawaii (2018).......there are very few "Hawaiians"......yet anyone with Asian qualities and .000000001 Hawaiian blood quantum, now claims to be Hawaiian. "Chip on their shoulder"??? Only the one's that have been inculcated through High School graduation that the white man is the root of all their problems......which is a good portion of "locals" on the islands. How is any of the Hawaiian History paralleling the "African Americans in the Mainland"? I don't recall in High School History Hawaiians rounding up Hawaiians and sending them on ships to the Deep South to be slaves. Waiting.......

Until I opened my mouth and when some have met my ohana then I was understood. It is hard being white and Hawaiian sometimes. I am too brown for the white man and too white for the brown man. I always say that I am a coconut turned inside out. I am Hawaiian and always have been. My family has always been here. I have my genealogy and know who I am. I have black cousins whom I love with all of my heart. And some of my relatives live as far as down south to Florida. I don't understand why so many people think they own the rights to land. If you buy and pay off your house/ land that is your property. Other then that no one owns rights to any property and any race has the right to live anywhere they choose if they pay for it.
@brandieblakely
@brandieblakely Год назад
Although technically we are all guests on this earth, the reality we live in is that you cant simply fly to any country you want to buy property. The government and citizens that belong to that country determine who, when, and why foreigners can visit and what they can do while there. Hawaii was its own sovereign nation but had those privileges stripped from them illegally. That is the issue. Then their people and culture were systematically demolished and their land taken from them and given to others with the result that they now struggle in the home land they once thrived in. Its a bit more complex than simply buying a house somewhere.

Yes, it is strange there at times. I am 1/8th Mohawk but look too pale, got called names on the Big Island, on Maui no, everyone was nice there, Honolulu, no problems. My son ( Not my site here) was born on Maui in 1976, red headed baby, the nurses laughed at him the second he took a breath because they said, "Those Howlie babies look funny, the local babies are so much cuter" like every new mom wants to hear that! Moved to mainland when he was 1 years old. When he was 18 we moved to the Big Island.My son asked his dad to drive him to Holi because he wanted to look for a job at a fast food place. In the parking lot on his way in( just a shy teenager with long hair) 2 big local guys confronted him and said, "If we see your face again, you no more have that long red hair". He never left the house for one year until we went to the airport to fly off Island. He didn't tell us what happened for ages, never wanted to leave the house. I worked 90 min.s away as a hairdresser in a small barber shop. Worked with 3 great ladies, 2 were locals one a long time resident of Hawaii, our boss. My first day on the job a local lady was waiting for me to do her hair, never met me etc. before. I walk in, one co-worker takes about 5 mins to show me around and ask about me, said I was a Howlie, told her joking that I was part native American. The customer looked really uncomfortable about me doing her hair, my co-worker told her, who i was and said not to worry because,"She be part Injin' and so no scalp you"! Funny but talk about a racist remark! On Maui in the 70;s my husband who is a tiny guy from communist Hungary was taken in as one of the gang and protected by his surfing buddies who were all 100% local guys. They saw how serious he was about surfing, showing up every morning for over 6 months to watch and try to ride the waves. They just loved him to death, he was one of them, went fishing with, went to their weddings, even named our son after one of the guys. On the Big Island a young local couple asked my husband and I to their wedding, we were the only non family quests to witness them taking their vows before the big party started. I am confused, if you're not a local then it's hit or miss, they either love ya or hate you.Oh, my co-worker a been married to a black man and had 3 kids with him, They said the were Papolo, guess that is Hawaiian for being black? Just odd.

Haole means foreigner, in Hawaiian. Not necessarily used a derogatory form, mostly used by locals to describe someone not of Hawaiian ancestry. However, when it is used in a derogatory form, it means the individual or individuals have done something that either disrespectful to the land( for example, threw trash or garbage on the ground instead of trash can) or disrespect to people( for example, trying to flirt with a local person's other half; girlfriend/wife, boyfriend/husband or family members). I was born and raised most my life in Hawai'i, I'm about 31% Hawaiian, but despite this due to my fair skin complexion, I still get asked if I'm Hawaiian. You are correct though, for those that come to Hawai'i, keep in mind that Hawai'i has it own set of acceptable morales and ethics. Most of us local folk are kind and compassionate, but it doesn't mean we will stand by and allow anything to harm the spirit of aloha nor will we stand for anyone that isn't from here to come and disrespect our heritage or the land. Other than that, most us local folk are open minded and accepting. Myself included, willing to take the time educate visitors or folks that plan to live here about Hawai'i and our way of life.

Hi Jason, I live in Hawaii and I appreciate your heritage, people, and culture. I've lived here for 5 years and it's the best 5 years ever. I know I'm kama'aina not kanaka but Hawaiians need to fight to get your land back. It can be done but there's strength in numbers...and I'll stand by you guys and fight with you but I can't fight by myself. It breaks my heart to see locals barely surviving in a land that's rightfully thiers. Housing prices so expensive that its unattainable due to location and mainlanders treating you like you're less than. Hawaiians are very smart and resilient people which is why you need your land back. It'll make the King and Queen proud... God Bless

vickikendricks many of us want our land back, but as it stands though. Unless the government starts to crack down, many of us are content living in paradise. I know Hawai'i is one of the top 10 most expensive States, it is manageable. A positive attitude and carrying the spirit of Aloha, along with a hard working mentality and good money management makes all of it hard but satisfying. I mean it paradise, a good 95% of my friends around the world wish they could move down here. Only a few of my friends ever had the opportunity to come and visit.

I feel you. My great great grandfather is Hawaiian and my father has the Hawaiian on his side my mother is Scottish. I get treated poorly based on my appearance. The Hawaiian people are being racist towards whites and then complain that whites did it to them. Double standards. I understand how annoying vacationers are. They can be rude. So by this logic I can understand the natives frustration. I moved to Hawaii so I could learn about my ancestors. I find Hawaii to be so relaxing and I've learned to look the other way when I get a dirty look. Once they realize me and my family just want to live and respect the Island, Hawaiians are much more friendly. My father grew up during the Times of Martin luther king jr. He taught us to treat others the way you want to be treated and to not judge a person by the color of their skin but by their character. I live that way and I teach my child this school of thought as well. Chin up, mate. Times are changing and the world has a place for people like you and like me.🤙🤙

@@truthisloud39 Fight to remove the US occupiers from the islands and you might earn enough respect to achieve immunity from your everyday haole bashing. Itʻs the best advice I can give.

I agree with this video. The only racism I encountered while there was when a native Hawaiian man kept asking me how was I able to afford where I was staying (at the Ho’olei at Grand Wailea in Maui).
