The fact of the matter is that you're not a multi-millionaire. In order to live the life you want, with a child, in New York, you need to be quite a bit wealthier than you are. So it comes down to a basic question: Do you want a better quality of life for your family with less things to do, or do you want to continue to pay through the nose for the perceived privilege of saying you live in New York? You don't have to pack up and move to Idaho. The key is to find a middle ground: a fun city with tons to do that is significantly less expensive than New York. If you wanna stay in the northeast, Philadelphia comes to mind. The suburban areas of Washington DC are also beautiful and culturally rich, and there's adequate public transportation to be found there. Chicago would be another amazing option. Chicago is significantly less expensive and it is truly a great American city; in many ways it feels very much like New York. During the summer months, I think that Chicago is better than New York with its beach-lined downtown, and fantastic neighborhoods like Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, Wrigleyville, Boystown...etc..etc.. St. Petersburg, Florida is another hidden gem. I moved down here from New York about 2 years ago, and I love it. It's kind of like a smaller, cleaner, less wacky San Diego... It has a great nightlife, fantastic restaurants and bars, tons of activities for families, world class beaches, amazing weather.. You're also only 1.5 - 2 hours from Orlando, 3.5 hours to Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach. You're not far from the Florida Keys, the Caribbean...etc..etc.. You just have to find what's out there. New York isn't the only cool place in the country, and certainly not the world...
@osimeon00

I agree with all of this. Sarah and Luis could live close by in Connecticut or New Jersey and still do NY videos while saving thousands of dollars. The rent they're paying is ridiculous.

Yes, that's what's driving the desire to relocate for me personally - in NYC you have to pay exorbitant amounts of money for nice modern apartments that are the norm pretty much everywhere else, but at some point I just realized that I am simply not willing to spend so much on my place of residence - I want to spend my money on travel.

Former New Yorker here and lived in Manhattan for a decade. All of the pluses of NYC can be had by taking a trip. I didn't go to Michelin star restaurants every day, every month for that matter. Overall living costs can be lowered and you can still travel (possibly needing a few more stops depending on where you go). The actual housing stock you get in an up-and-coming city is going to be fairly new as well. I do not miss seeing random waterbugs and dealing with the mice that came with my pre-war building in Manhattan.

Where did you end up moving? Speaking of mice, I generally like the Murray Hill and Kips Bay neighborhoods in Manhattan a lot, and pre-pandemic used to go out there all the time (the best and cleanest movie theater there), but the streets were just infested with mice! And, you know, at least rats are large and you can immediately spot them, but these buggers are small and hard to see in the dark. I don't know what it is about that location, I've never seen any mice where I live in Brooklyn. 🤷‍♀️

Since you have a child now you could buy a home in Staten Island. Its the safest borough of the 5. Its not far from the city. Child care would be much less expensive. S.I is the perfect place for raising a family. Check out bay st Landing . Its minutes from the ferry. South shore of the Island is accessible by train. Its nickname is Staten Italy. With that $5,000 that you're paying for an apartment in Long Island City, there are definitely other Queens neighborhoods that you can look into for less and for more spacious apartments. Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, Woodside, Ridgewood for example would get you more bang for your buck with what you're paying for where you, Bella and Louie are currently located. But, there are other cities with great diversity just like NYC that aren't as expensive like Jersey City, Raleigh, Charlotte, Los Angeles, San Diego (Yes LA and San Diego although expensive, they're not as expensive as NYC) then there's Sacramento, Houston, Dallas, Austin, Tampa, Orlando, Miami, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Denver, Salt Lake City,

I moved from New York to St. Petersburg, Florida 2 years ago. Best decision I've ever made. St. Pete is full of culture, great nightlife, restaurants, world class beaches, warm weather...and it's still relatively affordable (especially when compared to New York). There's also no state tax down here, so for the line of work I'm in, that helps. New York is fun for a time, but it gets old after awhile. When it comes to large cities, I actually prefer London and Madrid over New York. I haven't been to Australia, but I hear their 2 principal cities, Melbourne and Sydney, are better than New York along a host of metrics. The truth is that New York is overrated. The more you travel the world and experience other cities, the more you realize that. But if New York is your thing, and you're convinced the city lives up to the hype, then have at it.

5,000/month is my living expenses for 2months (Texas) You can travel the world from Idaho too. Family is just a Skype / phone call away. “Absence grows the heart fonder”. You’ll be able to travel more paying less for housing + child care. You’ll actually have a place called home. Funding retirement / college fund for children. Your going to have to upgrade your apartment soon so Bella can have her own room eventually. So that child care expense will seem to rollover into y’all’s growing expense. Your doing very well for yourself if you can afford to even consider staying. Best wishes and all the prosperity.

It's cool to see that you are staying in NYC for at least another year. The most important thing is that you are doing what makes you the happiest, and I can tell that the positives are easily outweighing the negatives. In future years, there's always the possibility of moving just a little bit away from NYC but enough to where you could easily go into the city via a commuter rail in case you and Luis decide to move at some point. Thankfully NYC has a lot of lower cost things to see, do, and eat which can be quite fun! In the end, I think you are making the right decision to stay at least for now!

We visited in October and I literally wigged out when I saw people with kids there. I literally don’t know how you do that. 😅 The things I saw in the short visit I would never willingly raise my child in. Men exposing themselves in broad daylight, people openly shooting up in the subway stations, plus so much more. I’ve been to big cities before (LA, Vegas, Seattle) but that was a whole different ballgame. I wanted so much to love it but unfortunately didn’t. Everyone is different I suppose. Cons outweigh the pros for me personally but I also understand wanting to be close to family. Is moving to the suburbs of New York or even Jersey then going into the city for work/fun an option?

Hey Sarah, I think the concept of lack of space is true to some extent but is in a completely American context where people have giant homes in the suburbs so 3 or 4 bedroom is taken as the norm. But space is a challenge is many large cities around the world and most families manage with 1 to 2 bedroom apartments.

It's a tough dilemma for sure, but the financial burden probably won't get easier, as you saw your rent already went up 700/mth and now with the additional expenses of child rearing that will be a constant stress factor. The thing is Sarah, you have so much going for you personally, don't let your emotions tie you to NYC, I feel you could make it anywhere, you are creative, have a magnetic personality, and are a natural on camera. Maybe it's time to really spread your wings, taking all your talents into consideration. Another big factor is deciding how you want your child to grow up, do you want her to have more space of her own, a yard to play in, or the experience of big city life? Also it's much easier to save money while your young and in your most active phase, then when your older. Best of luck to you!

Concerning subway I think u can use feeder/local buses which are much more accessible to get to the nearest express station which more likely has elevators. This is overall slower in NYC circumstances than using subway only but needs much less physical effort. Also feeder buses can help to get to the subway junctions where several services combine and where the trains are thus more frequent, compensating bus' loses of time. At least u can try this type of transportation strategy ;)

The people are definitely meaner in Seattle, though, and the homeless problem in Seattle is out of control. NYC has better public transit, but Seattle is definitely a place where $5000/mo would buy a nice house.

I am currently visiting NYC this week and been enjoying every single day of it, but it can be quite expensive for certain things here. I am from Washington, DC area and living in Virginia because living in the nation's capital is so expensive. which isn't immune from high prices. But with each city comes its pros/cons of course!

You can move to a nice area in Queens get a 2 bedroom with a lot of space and still be near Manhattan and transportation to the city.youd save alot of money .i live in a huge 2 bedroom in Whitestone with city views and I pay 2200 before that i lived in Maspeth Queens had a backyard and I was literally 10-15 mins away from bushwick,manhattan,astoria and Jackson heights..theres also very good and affordable day cares here some that have camera fees for you to check in on your child.

2 words: Umbrella Stroller. Get one. They are cheap, not bulky, and fold up quickly into a, well an umbrella! When climbing stairs, fold the stroller, hook the 'umbrella' handle over one arm, carry baby in the other, and your good! I lived in San Francisco with my baby. Did that all the time. The 'fancy' (i.e. heavy) stroller stayed in the closet gathering dust, until I finally gave it away, but the umbrella stroller got used every day. Yea, you need to do a lot of lifting, but then you don't need the gym. I got a lot of happy miles out of our umbrella stroller!

You can do it! Bella won’t need daycare and a stroller forever, and I know people who raise children in smaller spaces than that. Obviously if your family gets any bigger the apartment won’t do though 😆

Melbourne Australia is about the 15th most expensive city in the world so I get what you mean about whether to stay or go. Young people especially are hardest affected as it so hard to get into the property market and finding a place to rent is really tough.

Sarah chose to live in LIC, an extremely high end neighborhood (and not super diverse) where all of the prices are inflated to cater to wealthy people. She could easily live in a cheaper neighborhood like Jackson Heights, Sunnyside, Astoria, Forest Hills, Prospect Lefferts and many others. Instead of living a modest life she chose to leave the city and make money by trashing the city on RU-vid.

Yeah, I keep exploring different cities in my search for a relocation destination, but nothing really appeals to me. I actually *really* liked Portland, OR when I visited eight years ago, but I don't like the political climate there. Seattle is very nice also, but a lot more expensive than what I am looking for, especially considering the only thing even motivating me in my search is lowering my living expenses.

Hi, could you make a video of a toddler friendly trip to NY? Thanks for the tip that not all subways have elevators, we were debating whether to take our heavy duty stroller or a smaller, umbrella stroller for our almost 2 year old :)
@Deci_Bella

I think Sarah way overestimated the subway accessibility though, it's probably more like 10%, not 25%. Generally speaking the New York subway is very old and not built for the commuters' comfort - there are extremely few stations that even have escalators.
