I fell in love with Paris in 2011, and although the honeymoon phase of my love affair has passed, I still feel more myself in Paris than anywhere else in the world.
But living in Paris isn’t easy, especially in mid-life as a solo who doesn’t speak fluent French! There are many challenges I’ve had to overcome. I am grateful because these new experiences are making me grow in many areas of my life, and the lessons are right on time.
When my marriage ended after 25 years, I knew deep down that there was a new adventure waiting for me. I refused to just give up, call it quits, and stay at home. It was important for my mental health and personal well-being to explore and spread my wings. But, just like a baby bird being pushed out of the nest, there were turbulent flights ahead.
In this video, I open up about how living in Paris half the time as a US citizen is pushing me to grow in a few areas. I hope this vulnerable video inspires you to push yourself toward your fabulous next chapter!

I started French when I was 45 and kept signing up for lessons for 20 years. The last time I was in France, I felt pretty comfortable with the language, as long as the person didn’t talk too fast. I would like to keep taking lessons, as my wonderful teacher Odette passed away❣️🥰💕🙏🏻🙏🏻💕

Hey thank you for your personal experience & advice, wondered why your friendship ended with your French friend? I speak fluent French mais oui, and I went to the Sorbonne and it was fabuleux. Bon Courage.

Dear Sharri I could teach you French . As a French woman in this age group I find the French corporate and else quite prejudiced with us women 50+ .. i think you would be a wonderful coach for someone like me " en panne" ;-)

Hey, thanks from California! I discovered solo travel when I turned 50… even though I am married. I will be in France for an extended period of time in the fall and some of your tips about the American Club, etc…sound great. I also appreciate your encouragement about learning French. I believe we do but we truly want to. Which means I do not log onto Babbel or Duolingo like I’m supposed to ha ha Thanks!

Enjoyed this video so much. Yeah I’m finding myself in this situation making friends is so hard because it’s an effort that you have to work at it all the time. Plus I learned at this age the friendship is different is not the same when we were younger. I’m learning to adjusting my expectations .

Hi Sharri, I loved this podcast. I am inspired and motivated to broaden my community and experiment. I am finding that connections are so important at our agae and in this day when more and more work and daily activities are moving virtual. Even grocery shopping can be done every week without stepping foot in a grocery store. We have to make a concerted effort to be around people more and more. Thank you again for sharing your wisdom.

Naeemah, you are so right. It is getting more and more convenient to not leave our homes, not interact with others. Thank you for sharing!!

I live in Florida, because this is where my husband is from. Right now, moving isn't an option because his parents need us to be nearby. As you can imagine, making friends in Florida is ..... a challenge. But I keep trying; looking for groups of women who share my values and interests..... During COVID, I found a wonderful group of friends online who share my love of Paris, and french culture. We even meet up in person occasionally across the US and in Paris when we can. I hope to maintain these connections for the rest of my life; they are truly wonderful people. We encourage each other in our daily lives, our hopes, our challenges (which include learning french in our 50s, 60s, and even 70s) and our dreams of one day settling in a big chateau in the Loire valley :D

What a beautiful share Danyel and encouragement for all of us. Find something you love and then others who love the same thing! Thank you.

I too can read French, Spanish & Italian but cannot speak it or write it. I think my deep southern twang holds me back. I'm learning the Russian alphabet now so I can read it as well.
