The mid Exumas has some of the best little towns in the entire Bahamas. The area is a must see for anyone heading through the Exumas. We skip along these areas, taking in all they have to offer. All while trying to keep our water tanks filled with fresh water. Oh, and Cyndi gets really excited about blow holes!

We are a travel couple, looking for a non-mainstream life of living aboard a boat and cruising in the Caribbean/Bahamas in Winter, and the Great Lakes in Summer. Working when we can to fill the cruising kitty. We have sold everything we own, and we now own a cruising yacht. We have chosen to do this voyaging in a powerboat/motor vessel, instead of the popular sailing route.
Our mission is to help inspire people to live their dreams earlier in life, instead of waiting until retirement. So often retirement dreams are dashed by health issues or other unforeseen later life circumstances. If you have a dream, then dream, plan, and do it now. We hope to make you smile, and spark the urning in your heart for fulfilling your dreams.

So as you can see we have some freshwater woes not having a watermaker aboard. So if you have any recommendations for a watermaker, we'd love to hear them. We will be installing one before the next visit to the Bahamas.

We have a sea recovery unit aboard THII which I need to work on because the previous owner did not "pickle" it properly before disconnecting it from the through hull. I have some work to do on it but what is nice is that after a few emails back and forth with Sea Recovery, tech support was very good and will support me with the parts I need to get it up and running again. You need to decide if you want a self contained unit or a modular unit and that is dependent on where you plan to mount it and the space available. Self contained is nice because everything is there in one location, modular is more flexible with the installation. Good luck with this project. I would suggest sticking to a company that offers support through the US, Caribbean and Canada so you can find parts easily. Having said that there are all sorts of hackers out there using HP pumps from pressure washers to force the water through and under the counter membrane to make their own version of an RO system....not sure I would go this route. Here is one you can check out, seems affordable. www.cruiserowaterandpower.com/40-gph-water-maker/

You are proof that we don't need to buy stuff all the time to fill voids in our lives. Your Channel is Underrated. In my opinion it is one of the best out there, I look forward to your uploads to get me that much closer to the Exumas....perhaps it's as close as I may ever get, but dreams are underway ! It's nice to see your boat as powered cruising rather than the usual sailing, even though I love both types of boats. I can see myself getting stranded here and being ok with that. It appears that you feel the same....Love the content !

Sea Water Pro makes several different water makers starting at.$2995 US. They are portable and also designed to fit into small places. Depending on your water source, they come with 1 -.4 filters. They range in size from (I believe) 35 gal/hr to 65 gal/hr. There are some portable water makers that are $800 - $900 but they are not built for longevity. Good luck from a fellow Canadian and hopefully soon to be Bahamian boater or landowner. I enjoy your videos.

Well done video. At the beginning I was afraid it was going to be too art-sy but you pulled through with a nice travelogue with some very nice videography. I know that wind and waves are variable but how long can you typically stay at a good anchorage like those in the mid Exumas before having to find shelter? Our son and his girlfriend took the boat down from Fort Lauderdale to the keys for a few days 2 weeks ago and reported that the generator and the a/c weren't working. Hopefully will be able to get down there to fix (or more likely pay someone to fix) stuff soon. Looking forward to next week's episode.

@SearchingforCShels
@SearchingforCShels 3 года назад
Thanks Ed. You ask a big question. It really depends on what kind of cruising we would do. If crossing an ocean, we are going to have to consider an older Nordhavn of some sort, if money was no object maybe a Bering. We don't expect to be rich, so if we decide to upgrade and we continue island hopping in the Caribbean, a 50-60 ft pilothouse with stabilizers would be nice. In an older video we run into a 61 Tollycraft Pilothouse. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fN3J2Hue7Lg.html We love that boat, even though it is a little large. @mvdospeces4370

We have a watermaker onboard and it changed our lived so much we would never be without one again. We no longer plan things around water. Unlimited time showers, and not having to go super quick rinsing dishes is great. When salt spray obscures the view out our windows, I just spray them off with fresh water, making for a great view once again. The unit we bought uses all off the shelf components, so there is nothing proprietary involved. If we need a part, we simply buy that part or one similar from anyone we choose. Ours was designed by Rich over at Cruise RO. Rich is a cruiser himself, and lives on his boat, currently in La Paz Baja. I cannot say enough good about him. When installing the unit I texted him on a saturday evening and he responded right away. Doesn’t get any better than that. The one I chose is a 40 gallons per hour system. We don’t need that much but it was nice because that gives me a spare RO membrane if something goes out. Once I had a membrane go out while at sea and had the system back operational in about 15 minutes, just at half flow. That was fantastic because it saved us a hundred mile trip to port. We have been on RO water now for five years, and never even dream of taking on dock water of unknown quality. We just make it ourselves. We even have the “test port” plumbed to a spigot at the galley sink. We use that to fill our drinking water jug which we keep ice cold in the fridge. Thanks again for sharing your lives with us. It is a great break while waiting for an Alaskan winter to end, and you are giving us great ideas for our cruising future. Heck we are only about 7,000 sea miles apart, and might just try the Canal someday or maybe even a DYT transport if that looks challenging politically or time wise.
@SearchingforCShels
@SearchingforCShels 3 года назад
Thanks guys. That is great feedback. Cruise RO is definitely a consideration. We will reach out to them. Is yours an AC or DC system?
@mvdospeces4370
@mvdospeces4370 3 года назад
@@SearchingforCShels Ours is AC. We just run it when we are running the generator anyway to charge batteries, or cook (we are all electric). We had a DC watermaker for several years and replaced it with this one. DC watermakers are limited in capacity. Ours was 7 gallons per hour. I know that sounds like a lot, but your usage will go way up once you have a source of water. We found we were running it all day long, and the pump was a single piston unit and was very annoying on our otherwise quiet boat. Imagine thump, thump, thump all day long. So it had to go. Lesson learned for us. We cannot really hear the AC unit running. Maybe a little, but not loud at all. Whatever brand you choose, I found that having a modular unit was best, as opposed to a unit with the control panel mounted on a big “box”. I liked the modular unit so that I could mount the control panel where I can get to it since I use it every day. A “box” unit can make it so that you are doing a hand stand or lying on your belly in the engine room to see the controls. Just something to consider. My controls are mounted in the salon and I never have to get to the rest of it except for service or filter changes.
@SearchingforCShels
@SearchingforCShels 3 года назад
Good to know. When we ration we use about 7 gallons of water per day. We could make do with a 7 gph unit, but why do that. I think I want 30-40 gph. This way I can rinse the boat and dive gear a lot better and more frequently. We also run the genny an hour or so per day, so it makes sense to do the water maker at that time as well. Thanks again.
@mvdospeces4370
@mvdospeces4370 3 года назад
@@SearchingforCShels It will really change your life. Imagine this. You want to get after it across a stretch of open ocean that would be just more comfortable if you could bury the stern a bit and reduce the roll. So... you make the crossing with minimal water, keeping your boat light, and then enjoy your extended cruising on the other side. I don’t know about your boat but on mine I pick up a couple of knots at fast cruise without an extra 1500 pounds of water. You could even get a washer dryer and not have to wait to do laundry.
