My husband and I done this all the time while he was still here. We put out nets and trout lines all down the hatchie river in Haywood county Tennessee. He ordered rice cakes and cheese from a Louisiana catalog. We would catch catfish and this huge net we caught buffalo. There's something he showed me that I never heard of on what he used for bait on the trout lines and that's Ivory soap. I didn't believe it until I went to pull up the line and there was catfish, bass and other kinds of fish 🐟. We done it for enjoyment and being outdoors. The fish 🐟 we caught mostly the buffalo we would give to family and friends! He's gone now to be with the Father 🙏 but I will never forget!!!

@@deanfulford69 I grew up on fishing 🎣 with my dad and I love 💕 the outdoors. My husband who passed away last July done it alot which is something we had in common. What was so interesting was being out in a boat in one of those back lakes and water moccasins would stick their heads up out of the water and he shot their heads off with this 22 long pistol that he always carried while fishing 🎣! Days I'll never forget but do miss!

In my 60s now and originally from NW FL. As a teen I would go out with my grandfather with a massive gill net in the bay which was “work”. Back then gill nets were legal but not any more. He built his own boat where the motor was mid boat with a platform for the gill net to set on for easy roll off. He made his own net teaching me how to sew by having me make a cast net. What an education he gave me. I still have the sewing needle he gave me back then which I treasure.

I am 61 years old me and my brother commercial fished when we were in our early 20s. Catfish were selling then for the same price it is now. The middle men and the stores make the money. I see fillets selling in the stores for up to 7 dollars a pound. It's hard to make a living when half of your catch goes to pay for bait and ice. Bait, ice and fuel prices go up but not what you get for the fish.

@@OutsidetheLevees She's talking about the fact that commercial fishing for catfish is BS. I catch big ones with rod and reel as well. And they all go back in the river. Wouldn't be too hard to self impose a length limit for what is kept in those nets. It's legal, so my opinion is just that...an opinion. I purchased 4 nets over the winter. Gonna start a side biz of selling filets and canned suckers to locals. Last few years i put out a single trotline 50hooks with live bluegill and catch about 400lbs cats a weekend May to August. While it is fun, it's a tremendous amount of work if you aren't baiting up or running, you are getting bait and cleaning. I can only handle 1 line. Cats over 5lbs need to have the center vein cut out and any brown meat that lies just under the skin skimmed off. If u do that, you can make a 50lbr just as tasty as 3lb'r. I dream of quitting my day job and living on my farm on the ky river and squeaking out a living

Gotta remember, the system is set up to allow producers just enough, so they have to keep producing. This is why its hard for normal guy to go out and catch som fish for dinner because the commercial guys take all the fish they don't care what size the fish are and they don't have any limits as too how many fish they take. I'm from Arkansas and we have a 10 fish limit for normal guys but we can't even get close to that limit because of the commercial guys having nets set all over taking all the fish. I'll tell you this if I hook onto one of those note its getting cut up after I take the fish I want and release the rest.

I grew up on the Missouri River running nets with my dad who was a Commercial Fisherman. They called him Donald Duck or just “Duck”, he was the son of a commercial fisherman and his dads dad was a commercial fisherman as well. I was the boat pilot at 5 years old. Dad would have 12-15 nets out at a time, he was also a full time corrections officer. Dad sold his cats for $2.00 a pound until MODOC shut him down by making catfish a game Only fish. That was a really hard hit for dad. He was left basically only being able to keep scale fish and sales dropped dramatically. I learned to sew hoop nets when I was 9 and can’t tell you how many I’ve made. Later on when I was 16/17 dad started selling eggs to an outfit from New York, that helped but taking the catfish away was a devastating blow.

So you basically make a living by what can be called legally poaching? Can't blame them for being human. Only worried about the now. Let's deal with tomorrow when it comes.

@@samicuspdawg Louisiana has been pulling catfish out of the bayous like this for forever now. Haven’t seen a decline yet here. If there’s ever a trend in the wrong direction I’m sure LDWF will make the proper adjustments.

I find it amazing that the price paid for catfish hasn’t really changed in 40 years. It’s been .45c too .50c per pound. My Grandfather and my father commercial fished for Catfish for a living. Fishing never grew on me like it did on them. My father had is own boat and trot lines by the age of 12. He just recently passed away. He had fish in his coolers and nets in the water when he passed. So you could say that he fished up until his very last day. I commercial dove for mussels through the boom years of that industry, but the fishing never got into my blood.
