Great video and great idea to use those bins. As previously said, hopefully they don't get to brittle in the cold. Our Army toboggans had a piece of material and cordage to close them up, I guess like the tub thing you referred to. I think you guys use the same sled or something very similar. We had a metal handle at the back so the toboggan could be pushed also by another guy or held back on a hill. We would take turns pulling, pushing, and following in the rear. Each man wore his full kit and ruck as well. The ruck with our winter kit weighed a lot more than the other times of the year. Sometimes we would mount the venerable old 7.62mm Browning GPMG on it's tripod and haul it like that so we could get it into action quickly. Believe it or not we used those GPMGs until 1993ish! The toboggan would carry the arctic tent, Coleman stove and lantern, fuel for them, rations, and ammo. Sometimes we would carry ice blocks for water, other times just use snow. And the Sergeant-Major would deliver the rum rations! But enough of my fond reminiscing, Thanks for this video! Chris

Add some skate trucks to bottom for urban trail hauling in summer. Great looking loadout for one man camp. Looks like your pack can be made out of plastic for outer shell. Just need to attach straps from a LBE setup to a pop top laudry hamper. Urbanize version of bush/wood craft design, if it works just use different materials.

Way back in 1972 to 75 (when you were a young pup), my brother and a buddy and me used my 4 foot tobbogan to haul ice fishing equp't, an axe, a buck saw, a cook pot, frying pan, grill, some spare clothes and socks and some folding stools all wrapped in a tarp to a fishing hole and we'd bore a hole in the ice and spend a day out catching fish. This was cheaper than a snow mobile and we went quietly to a secret hole. We would haul back under the stars in the moonlight, which was a treat. That was living, brother, in Canada, Northern Ontario.

I have a toboggan on the way. Been without since I left New England in 1967. I think my parents sold it without telling me. Now I will spoil my grandkids and have some fun snowshoe outings! I am researching a freighter model.

Turned out to be a nice day after the storm here. Haven't really done much winter camping lately but that toboggan is a great idea. Sarge i see your out and about being busy as a beaver. Have you ever done any thing with a snow cave as a emergency shelter. It's certainly cold enough and the snow is plenty deep. There surprisingly comfortable in a emergency situation if you do them right. stay warm and keep the video's coming. I'm in front of a roaring fire sacked out on the couch watching them. Lmao
@sargefaria
@sargefaria 9 лет назад
goriverman LMAO....right on man, thank you as always. As far as the snow cave, or quinzee, I have done them and planned on doing a video on it soon. Not so much for the build, but more to cover things usually kept out in those type of videos. Some glossed over concerns to be careful of
@JamieHitt

I love those things. We make ours each year for hauling deer and firewood. The skeleton is sch80 pvc and the outer is galv. roof flashing. Screw it together and bam. We try to get more fancy each winter to compete with each other. One year mine had cup holders. Our tow harnesses are made from seat belts so if the sled was to fall over the hill we can "quick release" to keep it from pulling us over as well. Great video!

Great setup! The tarp seems to work great and you can use it for a shelter, that's awesome. It's amazing how much weight you can move in a good sled, like 100 pounds with little effort, also the longer skinny sleds pull even easier than wider ones, or so it seems anyway. I think you got a great idea with the totes also because they are waterproof as well as good for storage and you can pack them in a hurry. Looking forward to another one in this series. Thanks man...

workingclasswoodsman Thanks bro. They are good at what they do for sure. Couldn't believe I found them bins for $10 each....a steal. I like how they have the bordered flat, hard top as well....good to eat off or just put things on without worrying about it falling off.

@sargefaria
@sargefaria 9 лет назад
right on. I have looked for the boxes and only found one guy (in Maine) that still makes them. Very traditional, which we like! I plan on making a couple (at least) of those as well.....known as a wannigan. Used to be, and still is, used on canoe and snowshoe trips, more so on canoe trips anymore. They have since been phased out it seems by plastic barrels and the likes.
@workingclasswoodsman
@workingclasswoodsman 9 лет назад
Yeah, I want to make one for my canoe and use it for camping and stuff. Its actually on my list of stuff to do this summer. I want to do a little research first and get some details, not that a plain box would't work.

Great video Derek. I've never used a toboggan to haul stuff before. It definitely looks like you can haul moocho stuff. I really liked you using your tarp as a burrito cover to hold it all together. Looks like a great hauling system. The totes are definitely the way to go. The ones you showed seemed heavy duty and great to stack too. You can use them for tables, seats, wash basin, and they're surface waterproof etc. Great to see multi use of one item. I'm glad to see another use for your heavy duty tarp. You have several ways to use that tarp even if you haul a tent. It covers firewood to keep it dry etc. etc. For those that may not now, Derek sells them and they are definitely heavy duty and worth every penny. Enjoyed the video brother. Keep em comin'.

Man that's a "Semi Truck" of the bush. I like those boxes good way to organize and carry enough equipment to be quite comfortable. I guess at some point weight might be a factor but if you plan it right I would think you wouldn't have a problem. We have many ways to lash people down to Skeds, stokes baskets, back boards, keds etc, from webbing to 1/2 inch rescue rope, but, one of the fastest ( and functional) ways is using old seat belts believe it or not- now, ( someone figured they could make money off of it) they're expensive and mfg. and called " speed straps "! Just a thought for when you're in a pinch.

Still thinking about some of the advantages with this setup. I noticed it seems very flexible when you go over bumps and into holes. Its seems like that would make it not want to tip over. That's one issue I have with my sled, its very rigid and tends to tip on its side.

Thanks for demonstrating your set up. My one concern with the new plastic bins is whether they will get brittle (and easily crack) when it gets really cold, compared with the more flexible bins, such as Rubbermaid, or for that matter canvas duffles. Let us know how they work out in the field.

Sarge, I was watching your video on the toboggan and I need something smaller like a sled, something that is more versitile and about 8' ft long and about 30" wide and with about 8-12 inch sides that is very cheap. I would like it to be made of heavy plastic so it will keep water out. Do you have any good suggestions of what I might be able to use or where I might find something like this or should I try and make something myself?

Cool beans Sarge. My Q in your last video (manouverability) was founded :) Watching you walk ahead and seing the overall length (tobogan and tumpline), makes it long. I immediatly went to the sight (tobogan) and check them out. Holly shit batman that stuff is expensive, not to mention cost prohibitive having them shipped to CA. I have seen and have considered these loomisadventures.com/gear/pelican-snow-trek-60-gear-sled-review made out of the same material you are using (low coefficient of friction), for around $75 CAD, and they are available locally. What I like in your teachings is that someone came up with use of a tarp vice those bags. Excellent idea! I was going to mention the same thing "redundancy". Those bags are sort of useless, but the tarp has a multitude of uses around camp, to include but not ltd to winter. My bathtub OTOH I have used (something similar (kids sled)) in the past going to the cottage in winter etc. I love the tub because it doesn't need to be lashed (read short trips). It also has a shorter but wider foot print (think snowshoes) won't dig in as deep (think cross country skis vice normal skis), and can be used as a catch basin for water at camp (3 seasons) and doesn't require the extra weight (although useful) of those tubs you were carrying. This tub/sled is easilly modified to suit our needs and there is several vids out there on how to do so. Not stealing your thunder good sir... My humble observations in the spirit of sharing and learning.

Unfortunately don't see enough snow in these parts, only seen multiple feet of snow once in about 30 years. Have you seen www.bigfootbag.com/ ? Not sure the sizes are right for the boggan, but the design seems better than the tanks, and still can use as a tarp/groundcloth
@sargefaria
@sargefaria 9 лет назад
RenThraysk those look to be way too big for use on a toboggan my friend. The lower and narrow the better, as to keep within the confines of the sled
@RenThraysk

Ah didn't realise they were as narrow 15" as they are. Few guys made their own boggans a few years for a trip in Sweden and they were atleast 18" wide IIRC

That''s a nice rig you've got there! I have no experience pulling one so this may be an uneducated comment... Could you just use some bungee cords over the totes to keep everything in place? Then you wouldn't have to undo the tarp to get at your gear.
@sargefaria
@sargefaria 9 лет назад
Eric Wright You could for sure use bungee cords. The tarp help keep the weather out tho. But using the bungees over the tarp is a fantastic idea as well
