Great video. Can’t wait to get my toboggans.

I am really enjoying these "this is the stuff we take & how we layer/pack it" videos. It's little details like this that most people from warmer, southern regions don't know about, things that need to be thought of and considered. Thank you for sharing!

Nice rig. Personally, I like the rigid old wood toboggans. I do like your loading and strapping.

OOS toboggans?

Lure of the North HA! oos = wood. sorry, small keyboard.
@lureofthenorth

I figured you might have meant wood, but thought maybe OOS was some military system! We're excited to be testing a wood one from Wooden Toboggan Co in Minnesota this winter! northerntoboggan.com/collections/custom-sleds/products/hand-toboggans

3:30 hold your gloves between your legs, or under an arm instead of setting them on a stump. Harder to lose and much warmer

Thank you so much for the response back to me why don't you keep up the good work that you provide everybody
@lureofthenorth
@lureofthenorth 6 лет назад
Ha! We feel like we are keeping it up, just not always via RU-vid, because there's only so much time in a day! We've moved to and been developing a wilderness property for the past three years, which has kept us away from video editing for a bit, but we hope to get back at it before too long. Glad to hear you've enjoyed the videos!

Hi, great video! I consider to make a toboggan and use it with my friends this winter. Europe, not Canada. I am lacking with data. What distance you can do with toboggan in average snow (3-5 feet deep) per day? What light material cod you suggest? I see you use some sort of durable plastic, not wood, am I right? Perhaps you know some websites I could look at? I would be very thankful for any advices.

Looks like it works great for long haul,... however that's a lot to undo, if you need to access gear fast. Particularly if you have cold hands, or are wearing gloves/mittens. You're first aid, emerge etc, should be carried on person, (ifak or isfak, fe), not secured on a transport. Lastly, if I may ask, with those toboggan's piled so far above centre of gravity, do they not roll frequently over un-even terrain?
@junbh2
@junbh2 4 года назад
If you look you notice they have a box at the front. The box is easy to open with one strap so things that need to be easy to access can go there. You can also tuck things like mittens or an extra clothing layer just under one of the outside straps.

Your experience with snow tobogganing, is awesome..thank you for sharing with us. by the Way, what would you say is the total weight of the toboggan with everything loaded and fastened down? Cheers ;-))
@explorermike19
@explorermike19 6 лет назад
Kanzee I don't know about the OP's toboggan, but mine usually weighs about 90 to 100 lbs for a 4 day trip including shared items, not including the toboggan weight.

I bought an old toboggan. The bottom is worn and looks like no varnish is left. Should I varnish the bottom or wax the bare wood?
@explorermike19
@explorermike19 6 лет назад
Bobby Hull do not varnish. there are at least two things you can do: 1) pine tar and wax (lots of work) 2) use a good exterior protective deck stain and wax.

Would love to see a video on how to control pulled sled with solo man on steep mountainside I will try to make one this elk season as it’s a challenge with heavy elk strapped on sled even quarters weight about 250 300lb any tips
@lureofthenorth
@lureofthenorth 5 лет назад
Sorry, somehow your comments got missed... we don't get into a lot of steep terrain in in Ontario, so our toboggans have a flat bottom for minimal drag in deep snow. For extended sidehills or harder packed snow a runnered sled would probably be a better choice.

Your vids are lots of fun to watch. if you got the time, Can you share about what type of materials / cordage etc the old mountainman /natives would of used for there snow sled rigs? Cheers. What sleeping bag are you using? What’s its rating?
@lureofthenorth
@lureofthenorth 5 лет назад
Since we tend to keep the stoves going at night, our bags don't have to be really high end. We have a bunch of MEC "Hybrids" rated to -20c. No longer available, unfortunately, but they were a great bag at a great price.

Lure of the North thanks for the reply. Per our conversation on the phone last week I’ll be doing training in N Canada this February and I have the 3 layer goretex shell military bags that I’ve used for years in Utah and Idaho winters. But Canada brings it to a different level, along with it being survival training. However-40 bags like Wiggy or feathered friends bags can crush you financially, so I’m looking for a better option. Thanks!
