Great advice. I followed this on my roof carrier debut and got the bike secure first time easily. There is not always firm, even ground for a step so having this practiced is a great idea.

be careful folks. I dinged my brand new SUV doing this with my disc brake disc costing me hundreds of $$ to fix. please use a step up stool. I went to REI and learnt the proper way of loading using a 2-3 step stool.

since i am only 5,2" i will follow your advise but i still need the stool :) otherwise i will crack my head open before i touch the car roof :).

I just switched from the rear rack to a roof, and I didn't even think about the slightly higher roof of my Crosstrek. Thanks. I definitely wasn't going to buy that dumb tire step for 80+ bucks or carry around a "sissy ladder" 😂💀

That is an injury waiting to happen or damage to your car just man up and get a stool.

Just use a fold up 2 step stool. Dosent take up much space in your vehicle.

I guess this is a good method if you don’t mind scratching up your car.

Interesting, thanks for posting. why not use a fork-lock rack? Less bike weight, so easier to lift; less rack weight; more secure bike connection; more aerodynamic bike position and more aerodynamic rack without tall vertical struts. I have a tundra with leer topper, will definitely use a ladder of some kind. When my tundra bed is available i use thru-axle fork attachment for mtn. bike, extremely stable.

Good ideas but I don't think it would not work for a woman... so I would use a sissy stool 🙂

Ruin your car paint, ruin your rear Derailluer. This is quite simply a terrible design by Yakima. Get a Thule Proride. Much easier to load a MTB onto a high 4x4
