Wonder how many of the backseat drivers, commenting, have rode a wide track tank in those conditions. Sure if you have the room, throttle and momentum are going to help. I have a Skandic SWT, and it is great for the most part. But deep powder, and tight places is not it's strong point. It just pushes into those ditches and tree trunk holes. Sometimes you have no choice, but stop and regroup. Not easy to tilt 700 lbs of sled with a 24" wide track. Now my long track trail sled, that's a different story..... stay on the throttle and sashay your way through the tight stuff. Try that on the Skandic and won't be long, you'll be buying hoods and bumpers. I think you did great Joe, especially for just getting used to a new sled. Thanks for sharing the experience!

Love your vids. We have to break trail like that often in northern Ontario. Try not to stop and slow down. A lil more speed will keep you on top of the snow. Standing and leaning the other way as it’s trying to pull you. You def have the right sled for breaking trail.

You can't stop and go like that. Just go. Literally just go. Don't stop. You have to stay steady. And most importantly is to keep the skis up and the easiest way for that to happen is keeping on the throttle. You definitely gained more confidence as you went.

HI Joe! You might remember me from year or two ago. I advocated for the Expedition. I have the same model 2020. I've lived and learned just as you have ref capabilities of sled. Going a bit faster and shifting your body weight from side to side as needed will keep you going in deep snow. Very wise decision to break trail first before pulling gear. I could actually feel what you were experiencing. Been there done that in Canada, WI and Northern MI. Been stuck a time or two or three but always managed to get out on my own. You are one tough bugger... And great friends. Hope you have an awesome season. And thanks for vids. Tom

Joe, try rotating the throttle toothed front and operate it with your finger in the tight trails. I know alit of guys who do that with the 4 stroke. Way easier to keep it smooth. Also low range in slow, small trails will help you out huge. Pop it back into high for open roads, lakes and that sort of thing. The transition to riding a 20" track sled takes some time.

Not as easy as it looks, go out on the lake and turn the opposite way you want to turn, and pull the sled down then turn into the corner. And try some skins on your skis to try to keep the front end up. I broke trail once from the lake house all the way to the trains after a 3ft storm went off the packed trail into the deep stuff many times. Found a lot of slush on the far end of chamberlain lake. Nice sled. look into a snow jack, it's saved me many times when I'm solo on my rmk. Definitely a work out and a half for us older guys.

Joe, great video, couple tips from a Canadian boy with the same style of sled (2017 1200cc Ski-Doo Expedition WT): Momentum is key in that type of deep snow condition, keep a steady pace and you should plow through just about anything. If and when you do get stuck (happens to me too!) the easiest way out is to clear the snow in front of the skis (if they're under the snow) and clear out the snow under the belly pan in front of track that is causing the sled to hang up and track to spin. If you can get that first 12" of the track to grab it will often walk itself right out of those situations. Also, low range and sport mode works best in wet sticky snow conditions (need the torque), high range regular/sport works best in powdery condtions (keep that track spinning at higher speeds).

Another classic episode, Joe. They say, if you don’t get stuck, you ain’t doing it right.😂 By the way, Lobster wasn’t named as such based on the claw shape. I’ll tell you more sometime of the history and maps. But it’s ironic the shape turned out to match the English given name once surveyed. Same goes for Moosehead, it wasn’t given that name for the shape - they didn’t know the shape back when it got the name. The Native Americans had their own names for each and these names are not translations either. Long story.
