T3 more or less means the flange size. We are going to cover turbo stuff soon so I'm sure we can cross some knowledge!

Should be a fun project. Most turbos have a little slack because they ride/spin on a cushion of oil that circulates which also provides cooling. I would check the specs on it.

@@ScottRods he's correct for journal bearing turbos (which that one likely is). Ball bearing turbos should have no discernable play though. Most modern turbos are ball bearing.

13b is a bold choice. Getting better these days as the engineering solutions catch up with the science! I'm sure you will cross all these bridges in time, but they like to run basically 2 stroke for fuel.. Looking forward to this!!

I had a non-turbo RX3 in a wagon many years ago. It was a freakin' beast! I used to street-race against some of the guys with V8s. They hated to see me show up. But man that thing drank the fuel. Don't listen to any nay-sayers. Its to be a "fun" car so if you need to change seals once in a while.. so be it. However.. don't underestimate the cost of getting a turbo rebuilt properly, unless things are different there. And with the size of the engine compared to the gearbox you should have great weight transfer. That thing should fly. Cool.

I see. All I've seen is the need for high-speed balancing of the assembly, which not many folks have the equipment for. I'm sure you are looking forward to the build. I would be too. Enjoy moving the "lightweight" frame all around. ;)

I believe (?)the t3 or t4 just refers to the flange the turbo mounts to. The car should be quick and agile when you get her going.

A piece of advice about doing a compression test on a rotary. You have to pull the Schrader valve out of the end of the hose on the compression tester to get meaningful results. If you don't, you just get the number of the highest rotor chamber of the 3 on each rotor. Mazda use a recording compression tester so they can actually see the peak numbers for each rotor. You can get close by just watching the gauge. I built a LOT of rotaries back in the day, started my racing in RX-3's in 1980.

Oooh this got interesting very quickly. I know very little about rotary engines which would take me right out of my four stroke comfort zone; but I do like how it will stand out from most other MX5 donor car builds. Good luck with the build.👍

This car is all about balance and cornering. Choosing this lightweight engine might prove to be a great option.

I'm going for a light powerful engine, but the frame and body will be a bit heavier than normal. Hoping this will keep it firmly on the ground.

Just remember Dave the rotaries flood real easy don't pump the gas when turning it over let it start on its own I wouldn't worry about compression just get it running then if it runs poorly then consider taking it apart and freshening it up rotaries can be problematic with newbies working on them don't ask me how I know this👌👌

We did have an Fd for a while, but it was completely stock and never had to touch it. I will at least squirt some lube inside and rotate it to make sure nothing is fouling anything.

I have been debating which engine to use . Currently I have an Austin Healey mk1 Sprite with a rotary engine . However , my son races a Mazda Miata with original drivetrain , and he keeps kickin' my ass ... so maybe the Miata engine will work best for the Locost .

If I could have found an affordable Miata that is the route I would have gone. I would have also added a small turbo. I've done the turbo conversion a few times on the Miata and it's superb.
