Hi Mike!!😀😀 I really hope that the I beam will be strong enough with the larger cylinder. Also if it was mine I would make the push plate stop about a quarter inch from the wedge. Hey Logger Al! I appreciate the comments that you and Scheib made. I had a feeling this and one other thing may get some response. I have not done anything with welding the clevis mount yet. I just have to take all the suggestions on the distance from the wedge and divide it by the number of people 🤣 I really appreciate it though. It will be moving it closer. As for the beam. It was an I beam from a construction project. It is a one piece 8” beam. I feel it is plenty strong enough. Appreciate the honest comment. WST
I appreciate your need for perfection, but in all honesty, cutting the tubing at 45 degree angles is not only extra work but it’s also overkill. Welding the tubing on top of the other pieces will hold anything that you put on the lift table. Also using the mig welder will hold it just fine, especially if you’re going to bevel for the extra penetration. I’m not criticizing at all. I’ve been welding my whole life. Just retired two years ago. You do very nice work. Just trying to save you or your viewers some time and without losing any safety or strength issues. I enjoyed watching your work. Wow lots of grinding on this one.. I remember do that to one of my Mazda pick-ups and I got rid of the 4cyl engine and went with a supercharged Rotary.. That was a fun build before kids were born.. This I bet is a build that you and maybe one of your sons are enjoying as well..

This brings back memories of the summer between my Jr and Sr years of high school. I worked in a metal shop and I mean worked. Dirty, nasty, sweaty work. I learned a lot including that my butt needed to go to college. This was back when you could work summers and afford school and also when people still thought a young person should pay for school. The splitter looks like it is going to be a monster. Great work.

Hi Tedd! Respirator will be worn when needed. I tend not to not keep using stunts repeatedly, but we’ll see. I wish I had the guard and the aux for the grinder. It’s been missing since Hoffa. No joke. I plan to get a new grinder soon. This one is slowly going to Dewalt heaven. Thank you for getting the white lines joke. It just came out my mouth. Mike I would reconsider your distance from the wedge I would go closer. There is nothing worse then an incomplete split. I would go about 3/4 inch from the wedge but if you are considering making a 4 or 6 way slip on then you will need to adjust accordingly. Just my 2 cents. Build looks good Man can’t wait to see it done!!🤘🏻🤘🏻🍺🍺

Awesome build mike!! However I would reconsider your distance from the push block to the wedge. When I built my splitter I kept a 1/2" gap between my block and wedge and I still struggle with splitting hickory and elm as those types of wood are very stringy!! Oak, Ash, maple and hackberry split easily and always complete. Just a thought. The build looks very solid! Can't wait for the next video!

Hey WST, I'm going to have to agree with Scheib on this one. The push plate on my splitter gets to an inch and a half away and I speak not kindly to it daily. Just wish I had one more inch!

You look really professional with those glasses 🤓 on not telling you what to do but my splitter stops a inch from my wedge my cousins stops at 2 inches from the wedge I like mine better in stringy wood easier to pull them apart hope ya have a great week

I don't know how many ton you will be pushing but the one my dad made was an 8 inch I beam as well. He was pushing 40 ton at the push plate and twisted the beam enough where he had to weld 1/4 inch steel vertical reinforcement on the beam to strengthen it up enough to stop the flex. All and all looking good so far. HEINZIE

Hi Mike! Yea, the push plate is going closer. I threw a number out and got good feedback on it. I’m currently taking distances from everyone and then will divide it by the number of people. I’m currently at .625”. 🤣 I appreciate the comment. I really do. Glad you are enjoying it. WST
With all the big wood you split. Why not a bigger push plate surface. If you are don’t you have to raise the cylinder to more centered on the larger pusher.

24” stroke. You can get a 30” stroke if you are into really big stuff. 24” should be ample. I have a lot of big gnarly wood and I wanted a cylinder that wouldn’t bend or break and give me good tonnage. This cylinder has more than fit the bill. Also, it is a 5” bore with a 3.5” rod. It takes up more area in the cylinder, which uses less fluid and improves my cycle times. You just need a pump and motor to deliver enough fluid.

Your always gonna be coming in with another piece so the only incomplete split will be your last. And on that one how much will be holding? 1”?
