And the man later went on to overthrow the republic and turn Rome into a dictatorship. Yup, it check out.
@sparklymage
@sparklymage 4 года назад
@@Deantrey Yes and no. When people say that they make it sound like he ended the rightful rule of the Senate and turned it into a dictatorship, but the Senators had already become corrupt and oligarchical. The murder of the Gracchi brothers by the Senate was the beginning of the end which happened 150 years before Caesar. Not that this necessarily justifies Caesar, but the Senate put him in a position where no one could win. They massively underestimated his popularity with the troops and the people to their ruin.
@Deantrey
@Deantrey 4 года назад
@@sparklymage (whispers) issa joke But since we're talking serious now. Caesar didn't overthrow the senate because they were corrupt, but because he was on a mission to attain power and his political enemies put him in a position where the only way he could continue to do that and to not lose everything he worked for was to take the action he took. The republic could have continued as it was without Caesar taking the action he did. And Caesar could have restored and even improved on the republican system once he had taken power. Of course as I said his whole thing was trying to gain power and retain it too, so by the very logic of his life that option must have been unthinkable and he could hardly be expected to take it. This however does not absolve him of responsibility. If his goal was to be a good public servant and to ensure the health of the Republic, as he presents himself to be in the speech we heard in this video, then likely he would have made different actions and history would have turned out differently. But his own internal values, which yes were drawn from the political climate of his day, privileged the attainment of power over public service (again, contrary to the way he presents himself in this speech). So sure, Caesar was not alone in this and in this sense we might say that the Roman republic was as corrupt as he was. But to paint him as a good politician who overthrew a corrupted senate is as historically inaccurate as painting him as a corrupt politician who overthrew a good senate.
@sparklymage
@sparklymage 4 года назад
@@Deantrey I didn't describe him as a good politician who overthrew a corrupt Senate, though? For one thing, the Senate didn't stop existing when Caesar took over. For another, by all accounts Caesar was actually much better to the average person than the Senate was, so I'm not sure what comparison we are making here. I'm more pointing out that the comparisons people make of Caesar with more modern situations don't really make sense. And there is no possible way Caesar could have restored or improved on the republican system. The system was alive in name only by the time of Caesar. They were so divorced from the average person and so high on their own self-importance that it would be impossible to change without removing all of them. This idea that the republic was somehow fundamentally ruined when Caesar made the obvious more explicit is nonsense. For the average Roman there was no fundamental difference between the Senate years and the Caesar years, except that Caesar was more generous with his wealth than the average Senator was.

To understand that, we have to apply a bit of inductive logic, phrased as questions: - Who benefits from a population unable to pull apart their speeches, campaigns, promises and bullshit? Among other people, politicians. - When or where might a population best learn the skills of logic and rhetoric? At school, primarily state schools. - Who is in charge of setting the curricula for schools? The politicians. Supposedly from the advice of experts, but this is routinely shown to be ignored. Having people dictate a system over which they stand to reap advantage from guidance detrimental to the majority is... well, corruption of vested power, but it happens all the time.

@LetztezBatallion 3 года назад
@@cameronhector9074 That's a nice thought, but the reality is simply that at such an early age logic is not something you can learn properly. In 3rd grade (8 y/o) children are doing basic math, adding, multiplying, and are starting to learn fractions. They JUST grasped the concept of an abstract number, no longer needing math problems to be explained using objects like "If you had 10 apples...". Their brains are not there just yet for such a thing. To you right now it may seem incredibly easy but remember you had to learn all this in the past, and it was pretty darn hard. Same thing applies to logic. After searching through documentation from multiple organizations it seems everyone agrees that around 13 Y/O is when you can start understanding formal logic and apply it properly. Coincidentally, this is the age at which physics and more advanced maths appear in schools (at the very least in my country). At this point it becomes a problem of "where do I put this thing". Physics and mathematics at this level do not use validity/soundness/cogency in any way, shape or form and without that you cannot begin to deconstruct an argument. History, geography and many such subjects do not use formal logic anywhere. You would have to create a new subject specifically to teach logic and everything about it, but you'd have to eliminate another subject, or dedicate even less time to each than they have now. And which one would you eliminate? From the top of my head I can't think of one subject that does not serve any purpose for a child/teenager.

@ChrispyNut

Yes, unfortunately some/many/most history teachers are boring, which leads to a disproportionate percentage of boring people continuing to study it to become qualified enough to teach and perpetuate the cycle, thus assisting in the perpetuation of the worst aspects of history endlessly repeating. Hopefully, with the proliferation of the internet and "free" access to passionate historians and teachers, a broader spectrum of people will be inspired to learn more history and pass that knowledge on in an increasingly broad manner so that lessons can really be learned from the past and terrible mistake left in the history books, rather than copied and pasted every few decades to centuries.
@Artholic100

No wonder its dull, if they just read it from the source, whereas a teacher who walks around in front of students and has memorized it almost in 1:1, would indeed be much more interesting to hear/watch. @@philippcrain Well there's some controversy over whether Caesar actually was trying to become officially king or not. Certainly the folks who killed him thought he was and there are a few incidents during Caesar's rule that support this (like the time Marc Antony tried to give Caesar a crown and Caesar waited to gauge the crowd's reaction before rejecting it, or him going around wearing purple, a king-associated color). Romans hated the idea of a king, and in many ways it took a few centuries before the emperors of Rome could really rule openly as monarchs rather than the fiction of being "first among equals" while pretending the senate and elected offices still mattered (and those elected offices stayed throughout the imperial period even though the elections had mostly been a sham since even before the Republic fell).

@malavoy1
@malavoy1 4 года назад
He was actually trying to become 'speaker' for life. The last king of Rome was thrown off the cities walls when they became a republic. 'Speaker', or 'dictator' in Latin, was a position that the senate had to vote on, usually in an emergency, such as open war between nobles, bureaucratic problems, etc. It had a time limit and the speaker could do whatever was necessary to bring the problems under control, but would be held accountable afterwards for any laws that were broken in the process. They eventually abolished the position until Sulla's mentor was elected into the position. Then Sulla got the position which led to a rebellion against him (with Caesar among them). But, at the time Julius Caesar asked to be made speaker for life, he was close to 60 and most Roman nobility lived only till their 70's, meaning he would only have had the position for 10 years. His nephew Augustus became first emperor after the fallout from Julius Caesars assassination (from the Latin word 'imperator' which means commander).

I remember having to translate part one of Cicero's counter-argument, his first Catilinarian, in Latin class, and I think it would be worth your time to do a follow up to this video looking at that. There's definitely parallels to modern politics to be made, in that Cicero appealed to fear and anger in his speech and also was able to essentially use unfounded gossip to support his argument while at the same time excusing himself from going into detail (I think the rhetorical device was "omitio," or argument by omission). On the other hand, this all sounds like a lot of work and I'm sure you have ideas lined up already. Good work.

"You have to figure out what must this person be assuming in order for their argument to make sense" Unfortunately it seems that more and more people are arguing in bad faith these days, deliberately not stating their assumptions so they can accuse others of 'putting words in their mouth' or misrepresenting their argument when you point them out. Pointing out that their argument is not valid without those assumptions doesn't make a difference because they never cared about whether their argument was valid in the first place. In fact, they've normalized the 'you just assume everyone who disagrees with you is racist' defense for this very reason.
@futurestoryteller
@futurestoryteller 4 года назад
That's why you have to ask them their basic assumptions, and then get them to explain to you how the underlying logic behind those assumptions is not racist. Believe me, it's not that I've cracked the code when it comes to arguing with lunatics or anything. But at the very least they'll enter cognitive dissonance mode, like the policeman Ollie was talking about.
@roadent217
@roadent217 4 года назад
"you just assume everyone who disagrees with you is racist" Seems like you and the speaker you're arguing against have different definitions of racism, yet both (or at least your opponent) visualize extremely negative consequences for being assigned such a label. To the point that the consequences would happen even if the label came up under a dispassionate, rational discussion. Like Olly said, a large part of debate is rhetoric - without proper rhetoric to reassure the listener that they're not being personally called out, or that they won't stand to personally lose standing if they continue the discussion, their ability to engage in the discussion will be compromised, and they will assume that it's _you_ who's arguing in bad faith, because your callous disregard for secondary consequences may be mistaken for active malice - in other words, "you're not trying to change their minds, you're trying to make them look bad".
@lukeedwards7677
@lukeedwards7677 4 года назад
@@roadent217 To be fair, given how frequently people have often made up their minds before engaging in argument and how they tend to describe those with opposing political stances (just ask Steve Crowder to describe leftist-liberals or Jim Jeffries to describe conservatives and you should be provided with all the data you need), the assumption that people have stopped caring about convincing opponents and are more interested in mocking them in front of an audience is one that holds true more frequently than not for 'heated discussions' held on social media (feel free to deconstruct this argument - if there are issues with it, I want to know so I can improve)
@tuomassibakov4518
@tuomassibakov4518 4 года назад
The solutions by multiple people here to address bad faith arguments are technically usable. The issue is, by experience, that the opposition will respond by claiming that your response is nitpicking, meaningless wordplay or something else that they can use to avoid responding to the actual arguments presented or issues pointed out. As expected from bad faith arguers, of course, and it's not like you can force anyone out of that. And then they repeat their bad faith arguments, maybe there, maybe later somewhere else. But at least it helps both to keep up the good faith thinking and criticism even if the flow is against it, and to possibly nudge some readers to the right direction.

Yavuz Selim Yağsan When broken down point by point, the assumptions look bad, but the trick of giving a speech is in the rhetoric and the way it’s delivered. In a situation like the senate where people wouldn’t have had time to break his speech down point by point, the assumptions he makes would go largely unnoticed. Plus, while the speech is arguing for exile, it’s main purpose is to argue against summary execution, and therefore making some assumptions towards the end about exile means less than if his entire speech was just about exile without having to calm the senate down from their thirst for blood

Preterism is a very well researched Biblical interpretation that believes the prophecies in the Bible have already occurred, so if they're right, again, don't hold your breath. Also, the decline of the overwhelming power of neoliberalism, capitalism, and the United States, all recent inventions compared to end times prophecies (although not the rapture narrative, which is also a very recent invention) seem unlikely to be signals of ancient prophecies. Plenty of other nations and systems have come and gone, and graver times have been faced.
