Logical Reasoning (Sound, Valid & Invalid arguments - Deductive, Inductive, Abductive Logic)

Join George and John as they discuss and debate different Philosophical ideas. Today the two will be discussing Logical Reasoning. This is the method Philosophers use to create sound and valid arguments. The two will run through different arguments to show what makes a logically valid argument, a logically sound argument, as well as a logically invalid and not sound argument. They will also look into different kinds of Logical Reasoning such as Deductive reasoning, Inductive reasoning and Abductive reasoning. By the end of this video you will have a greater understanding of formulating a good argument, making the way you debate valid and sound, perfect practice for any debates you will find yourself in.

I have to ask you: the men are mortal example - isn’t the first statement “all men are mortal” an inductive reasoning derived statement? So how can we say that the example is both sound and valid. I understand it’s valid as conclusion logically follows the premise, but to be sound it must be valid and premises and conclusions must be all true: but since we cannot assume the first premise is true, we lose the potential for soundness. Am I correct?

I must say I also take issue with the idea that abductive is less probably than inductive and that abductive uses inference (but inductivr doesn’t). Inductive uses inference by inferring the conclusion based on assuming that what happens in the past is a predictor of what happens in the future.

One of the best books for a wide overview on all major areas of Western Philosophy is - John Cottingham's, Western Philosophy an Anthology. Many different theories from all major Philosophers are included, snippets from their original works as well as a clear concise summary from Cottingham. This book will really enhance your knowledge on many different areas of Philosophy.

I disagree with deductive reasoning. “1. All men are mortal. 2. I am a man. 3. Therefore, I am mortal.” How did you know that all men are mortal, to begin with, if you did not already first establish that you are a man and are mortal? “1. All humans have brains. 2. I am a human. 3. Therefore, I have a brain.” How did you know, to begin with, that all humans have brains, if you did not already first establish that you are a human and have a brain?

For an argument to be sound, it requires only that the argument being valid and the premises being all true. For an argument to be valid, it doesn't matter if the premises are true, it requires only that the conclusion logically follows from the premises. And in the two arguments you mentioned, the conclusions do follow from the premises logically, hence they are both valid. Since the two arguments are both valid, the question that whether they are also sound depends only on the fact whether the premises are also true. But note that whether a premise states a truth is an objective fact. A premise can state a truth even if no one knows whether it does. Hence, even if the creators of this videos do not know whether the premises of the two arguments you mentioned are true, the premises can still be true, therefore the arguments can still be sound. Indeed, if the creators in fact do not know whether the premises are true, they cannot know whether the arguments are sound. Therefore they do not know what they say i correct or not. But that doesn't prevent what they say from actually being true.

Biology tells us that if you are human you have a brain. The more recent a discovery is the less certainty there is. Things need to be repeatable.

@@baburali8230 it doesn't necessarily LEAD to uncertainty, in fact, if your finding was not repeatable it would certainly be false. The concept of certainty isn't a zero-sum game and in many ways can be subjective in and of itself because there are degrees of certainty. A person can have certain beliefs that are incorrigible but certainty doesn't make them indubitable. The reason I can be certain that a living human will have a brain is because it is a taxonomic definition. Sure, there could be a zombie apocalypse eventually but in that case we'd have to view it as humans can BECOME zombies. Until that first zombie baby is born and they become an evolution of man.
