Notice how both Atreus and Angrboda perform the spell. In the mythology, Loki and Angrboda are his parents, so this is a creative way to stick to that.
I like how the giant didn't freak out with its new serpent body. It is likely the giant was so vengeful he doesn't care if he is a serpent. All he desires is vengeance against Asgard and Thor.
@@memelord9965 İf you ask cause of the nearly dead stage in the beginning, I believe its Angroboda's grandmothers work. She was collecting the souls of the animals
Anyone noticed that at 2:04 when they put their hands together they create a heart around the Serpent? Meaning they created him out of love but in their own spin
As soon as I saw that snake and Loki wanted to put a giants soul into it… that’s when it clicked for me. I was in awe to actually see the birth of the giant serpent.
When I saw the dead snake and Atreus carrying a sac of soul marbles, I IMMEDIATELY knew that this would be the "birth scene" of our beloved Jörmungandr. It was so obvious, lmao.
I literally didn't put 2 and 2 together when I saw this scene. Im like..well..we already got the OG world serpent. So it can't be 2 of them at the same time right? Then it clicked. They are literally the same snake, but due to the World Tree having a temporal issue with one of it's roots, and also due to the fact that we killed off Nidhogg, The world Serpent was literally stuck in a time loop of Ragnarok until it was finally concluded. Being that Kratos & Atreus was the anomaly in this Pantheon that ended Ragnarok by destroying Odin (thanks to Sindri ofc). Blew my mind. It wasn't the hit from Thor that sent the snake back in time, it was just the Yggdrasil tree sending the serpent back to GOW of 2018 in the lake Hence Freya's comment that he "appeared" out of nowhere one day. What a confusing yet interesting spin on that lore.
@@beingsloth9482 bro how can a younger version when sent to past gonna be that big ? If a younger version is sent to future and then he looks big then it make sense
@@reyansk709 Angrboda already said that the snake grow really fast when they meet again at Muspelheim . It has Giant soul now . And if you noticed Kratos say the snake looks difference. And he doesn't have beard if you look closely.
@@reyansk709 the younger version turned big because he got the soul of a big giant stuck to him, and then that younger version was the one sent back in time before his birth, which is why jormungandr exists while Atreus isn’t alive yet. It’s a crazy weird time paradox but luckily the world serpent isn’t in a time loop, he dies peacefully, he will just always be a ragnarok one time or another.
not sure if i'm right about this but the soul could be of Hroðr, Tyr's mother(?) maybe that's why the fight between Jormungandr and Thor is so personal?
Hopefully we can get to see Jormungandr again maybe in a future dlc of some kind, following loki and his journey to unite or bring back the giants. While also getting to meetup with basically his snake son, considering it was said the snake grew extremely large...would also just be nice to see a young Jormun. since we only ever in myth, legend, and other folk tails get to see him in a old tired, and basically decrepit state. Also makes me wonder who the giant was that Loki put in the snake...unless it was Vekja
I also really hope for a dlc. The way things were sent up just screams dlc to me. Loki looking for the giants and may bring them back to jotunheim and stuff Also the soul put into the snake was named “jormungandr” so the person was jormungandr and kept the same name when he became a snake.
@@bibby659 I think he did notice. That’s why he picked it, so it’s a self fulfilling thing in a way. Loki met a big snake named jormungandr then later puts a giant named jormungandr into a snake because he knows it’s the world serpent
I remember the story of when the serpent got hit so hard he went back into time. And when Angrboda said the snake the they brought back was getting bigger fast I just new that was him
yeah, then during Ragnarok, you actually see Thor hit him so hard, he vanishes into thin air, meaning he got sent back in time, just like Mimir predicted in 2018
Does make me wonder if Jorm actually remembers having hands and feet once... and how alien it is to him now that he doesn't have those. But also makes me wonder just what exactly it is he used to do in the Giants society.
They simply removed the man the horse would belong to, as well as skipped the creation of the wall that would have allowed the horse to be made in the first place.
Nah, she just got burned in Muspelheim, it's hot down there. As described, one half of her was dark blue to the point of black, so I guess developers just saw "black" and go "HERE HERE, SEE? A BLACK NORSE GOD, I TOLD YA ALL" Edited: Ok, I confused Angrboda's desctiption with Hel's - her daughter. And all make sence now, if her daughter is half pale and half the darkest of blue to the point of black - THAT MEANS HER MOM WAS BLACK, BAENG!!!!!!!
Angrboda: I say we name him Jormungandr. Atreus: I think "Boi" is a more fitting name. Angrboda: No. We are not calling him boy. Atreus: It is a good one. Angrboda: It's a weird one. Atreus: Weird can be good. (Death stare from Angrboda) Atreus: Ok. Jormungandr is it. (mumbles) Still I'm gonna call him Boi. Angrboda: It is a good name. By the way, you get to name the next one. Just use that brain. Atreus: Ouch.
This is an impressively creative way to keep Loki and Angraboda as Jormungandr's "parents" without needing to get hung up on how two humanoids have a snake for a son!
Well, you see, when a mommy and daddy want to make a snake; daddy shows mommy his world serpent and then Ragnorak comes. Or something like that? I don’t know my Azmerian history that well....
@@IPostMeAndMyFriendsRecordings Not only that, it's the fact that jotnar came in literally all shapes and sizes, making the appearance of their offspring unpredictable
Nice to have confirmation that Atreus did technically create the midgard serpent, with help from Angrboda. They were the "parents" of Jormungandr in god of war's version of the myths. Also, Jormungandr's hatred for Thor may be partially due to the soul of the giant that was put into the snake's body. It's also nice to see that Kratos, Mimir, and Freya realize how the Jormungandr that was recently created by Atreus did get sent back through time to become the Jormungandr that we knew from 2018.
I am so confused Thor sends jormungandr back to the past but in that time there is already another jormungandr which was also sent back from his future So doesn't this mean there are two big world serpants at the same time ?? Man I'm so fucking confused
For anyone that’s confused, this snake that was just revived is the one seen during the battle in Asgard fighting Thor, how did he get into Asgard you may ask? Most likely from the jotunheim gate once the battle started, and then sent back in time by thor, hence the older version of jormangandr
So the World Serpent's hatred for Thor was from a Giant that carried the amount of rage embedded in their souls and now Jormungandr inherit that same kind of hatred as well!? Now I see why he and Thor had been of an unpleasant history between them.
Maybe it was that guy Starkaðr, who was the mightiest warrior among the giants? Thor and Odin slandered him as a monster, turned the armies of the nine realms against him, and then executed him in a kangaroo court. THAT would explain his rage towards him.
@@sphere7158 Yeah, and then there's the matter of how Gryla would have been able to get a hold on his soul in the first place...like Odin, the clever bastard that he is, would definitely have made sure that nothing of him remained, or locked the soul up tight in some godforsaken place.
Looking back on this, this also explains why he grew to be so friggin massive of a serpent in the first place. He had a giant's soul inserted, so the power in it made his body grow to that enormous size and power.
If everyone is still confused, after this mission there are now 2 jomungandr in the timeline. One in Midgard just chilling in fimbulwinter and one in Jotunheim (the one on the top of the video) just growing and growing. The jomungandr we see in Ragnarok was the one on Jotunheim and the jomungandr on Midgard didn't participate in Ragnarok since he already participated in ragnarok and got sent back from time by Thor
@@aglassofchocolatemilk5553 you ain’t wrong but I guess Midgard is free land so not like he has to pay rent. Should start making him do something though
So does Jorm still have his own conscience, meaning the giant influences him to hate thor but he still thinks with his own mind, or is it the giant fully in Jorm's conscience now and it's really the giant that controls Jorm's actions, not Jorm himself?
@@trihermawan9553 I believe that's because garm while alive doesn't have a soul to begin with, same with this the snake soul had been taken, but I believe the memories of a snake is still there, but overwritten by the giant's soul thus creating a new persona
The lead story writer confirmed that marble that contained the soul which got inserted to the serpent had the name "Jormungandr" so in the GOW universe, Jormungandr was a giant and then his soul got put into a snake by Loki and Angrboda. PS: Go check Jon Ford's video for the confirmation concerning the name on the marble
If I remember correctly in the myth The snake was already big enough that it caused problems in Asgard. So it was either odin or thor that tossed it into the sea. But its said that the snake got bigger and bigger thanks to the sea water. Becoming so big that it could rap itself around the globe going full circle into biting its tail. Now we saw the young snake going into water. So my theory is that it became larger and larger in that short period of time thanks to the water
Annoying bot aside, how did the snake get so big by the time ranagok actually happens. Did the snake grow several mountain ranges in a couple of days just for get sent back in time?
@@barbadazkvrna giants can control their height at will so they can choose to be a human size or as big as a house and yeah some giants don’t have that they just small
I love how they are staying true to the mythology while putting their own spin on things. So Fenrir was Atreus dying wolf and he put his soul into a giant wolf to bring him back, it took both Atreus and Angrboda to revive the snake making them its “parents” and the reason it grew so large was because they used the soul of a giant, probably grew to a size equivalent to its former body. The only child of theirs we don’t see is Hela who will probably be conceived the old fashion way. 😏
Probably the horse will appear in the next game. Or they only exist in the original prophecy timeline where Kratos dies by Atreus’s hand and Odin lives.
Except that it isn’t exactly clear what happens to Jormungandr in Midgard after Ragnarok. Remember that technically he’s still ‘around,’ but that it’s the younger version we see in Asgard. Not exactly a loop; just a weird time travelly way of being born. Born in the future, sent to the past, live through to the present.
@@NotreDameSentiento now im confused all of that happening in one game no wonder playstation is always taking so long they make sure they have enough detail
My take on this is that the giant serpent that fought Thor on Ragnarok isn't the same one who helped younger Atreus in GOW 1. During Ragnarok, the old serpent from previous Ragnarok is still in midgard, he didn't travel to fight the 2nd time. I believe it was this young serpent who turned giant and fought Thor. Young Jormun isn't aware of his older self in another realm and the older one doesn't care enough since he knows how it all ends. In GOW 1, Old Jormun recognized Atreus because he remembered Atreus bringing him back to life using the giant soul stone and getting his ass knocked back through time.
yep, old world serpent in midgard won't be able to fight thor, cus the older one is very weak, and baldur only need 3 hits to knock him out. while the young ones can fight toe to toe against thor. if old world serpent when to face thor he would be knocked out in 1 hit
It’s the same one just in different times. Thor sent a younger version of the snake back in time with their fight during ragnorak which we seen in the background outside the walls of Asgard. After a hit from the hammer poof the snake disappears and then follows the tale that it was sent back in time. Hence why the snake knows Loki in the first game. It’s just a confusing timeline but same snake as it had a giants soul and anytime you give a regular animal the soul of a giant it seems like most of the time they get bigger
When Atreus and sindri go to see the world serpent, the soundtrack is the same as when this snake gets its soul, hinting that it’s the world serpent. Clever
When Loki was in Muspelheim, he distracted Thor and met with Angrboda. She said that the snake was getting too big. In Ragnarok, Mimir said that the Jormungandr that appeared did not come from Midgar.
In the original Norse lore and myths, the world serpent was thrown into the sea by Odin because he thought the little snake would die and drown. But instead of dying, the opposite happened. The serpent thrived in the vast seas and ate more and more until it grew big enough to wrap the world. It then bit its own tail, swallowing and making an ouroboros. It's said in the old lore, that when the world serpent releases his tail, Ragnarok begins
🤣🤣🤣 I love it when artrues calls Jörmundandur, when he says " Loki Yaahhh " Jörm looks at him as if to say " I know where I know this kid from🤣🤣🤣, but he's so grumpy about being woken up, he's like " dude iron wood "
So the older Jormungandr we met in GOW1 is still in Midgard and didn't fight Thor in Ragnarok but his younger, more vengeful self did and was sent back in time?
Yup. The older Jorm is the same that fought in the Ragnarok, BUT he just stayed in Midgard after being sent back in time. He is just chilling now. And like... Chatting, or sum' shit.
I feel like they could have read the name of the giant on the marble, and that name could have been significantly similar or exact to the name Jormungandr. It would also help anyone who was confused on if this snake was exactly Jormundgandr.
@@XxDeathxX509 no Hel is just a title for the ruler of Helheim, the Hel that is the daughter of Loki and Angrboda will rule Helheim when the current ruler (the huge bird in Helheim) retires.

Its great. I didnt register that at all the first time I played through the game! Then later on when Mimir wonders how does Jormungandr remember Loki and knows to hate Thor in Ragnarok I remembered this scene where Loki imbeded soul of a giant into a snake!
I don't know if you heard this but Atreus and Angrbhoda are the snake's mumsy and poppers and this is a CREATIVE and ORIGINAL way to do this. I assume I am the first person to point this out.

@@rainmaker9300do you even sleep there, like I am still thinking what happened when you're put in a marble, how do you feel? Or in a knife? Like do yoy feel anything? It must be boring
So Fenrir, Atreus his wolf in Garms body, living with Atreus and Angrboda. Jormungandr, created by them both. Their last child, Hella. I wonder if that would be their daughter in the next game. I have a theory about it but we will see.
not in this version in God of War; Fenrir started out as a normal, mortal wolf that Atreus had as a pet, but died at the start of the game. Atreus had to euthanize him, though he accidentally cast a spell that removed Fenrir's soul from his body and part of it went inside Atreus' hunting knife. this was brought up later by Angrboda in Jotunheim. then later, in order to stop the soulless Garm from rampaging through Helheim, Atreus stabbed him with the knife, placing Fenrir's soul inside Garm, which erases Garm's mind and replaces it with Fenrir's. meaning Atreus is responsible for Fenrir's rebirth as the wolf from the Mythology
If the original Jormungandr is roaming around Midgard after being sent back to the time before his birth, does that mean Atreus made two Jormies? If so, where is the young one? If the young one got sent back in time, then there’s just an infinite time loop of Atreus making an infinite amount of world serpents
So when atreus revives the snake with a giant soul at that point in the timeline there are two snakes, the older bigger jormungandr around the lake of nine and the young one growing massive in jotunheim, then when kratos blows gjallarhorn, younger jormungandr goes through the jotunheim gate to asgard and fights thor and gets sent back in time in midgard and grows to wrap around the whole world, this is why in 2018 god of war the world serpent said atreus seemed familiar to him and then in this game the older jormungandr tells atreus about ironwood which leads him there and enables atreus to create him
@@anotherhappylanding4746 So Jormangundr was there to tell Atreus what to do, to stop an infinite time loop of Jormungandr being created then getting sent back in time, the old Jormungandr was there to tell Atreus what to do, because that Jormungandr already lived to see what happens at Ragnarok

When Angrboda asks if Atreus is sure, and he says “No.”, yet she let’s him anyway, is a brilliant moment. Trust is hard to come by in this realm. When Atreus was willing to admit his doubts, Angrboda knew he trusted her, and so, she trusted him.

The only thing that hurts my nerd brain is that the reanimated snake has a snake head, but the world serpent has a lizard head, so while growing it transformed too. Okay, it's pure fantasy, but they could've make this more consistent since they didn't need to align with any particular mythology detail.
Talk about a middle child syndrome for Jörmungandr. Even a world serpent hates the feelings of being neglected, so naturally he grows to size so he could compensate with his self-esteem.
This was the only important thing that happened in Ironwood, but it took two hours of time to finish this whole boring section. And yet, the attack on Asgard takes less than an hour, with most of that hour being occupied by overdramatic cutscenes. The writers really dropped the ball between these two moments alone, and there are plenty of other problems with this game's story besides those.
