The most important rules are: 1. Dress for yourself and have fun 2. Don't let anybody stop you 3. Never ever call lolitas lolis (a loli is a sexualized underage girl,) cosplay, or a costume. 4. Don't harass or make fun of lolitas

While I am not a lolita, I feel that in any from of art or expression knowing the rules, and understanding the framework they provide and why they are there, allows you to break them with purpose. Someone who doesn't know what/why the rules are not adhering to them just feels like they don't care about it or respect it. But when someone knows them, and can explain which rules they are breaking and why, there is a reason for it and a thought process behind it. (also didn't know we had any lolita boutiques at all here in the netherlands, I must up my google skills and visit this store!)

I'd say Petticoat is more important than covering shoulder and knees. Although I'm mostly a boy-styler so I don't wear petticoats in most of my coords.
@HarleyMaldonado

im the same way!! the lolita silhouette is key for me. Knees im more lenient since people come in different heights and not every dress falls the same way on each person. Im not really a "YOU HAVE TO COVER SHOULDERS" person either. I tend to break rules and blend style elements knowingly, but i always admit to it because im just a rule breaker in general lol

I live in California and during the summer I often go blouse-less. It’s literally unsafe sometimes to wear that much clothing in the heat we get here. I even tried a light bolero with mesh in it once and found myself severely overheating. Just wear a petticoat and style appropriately for your local weather. The no cleavage thing kinda bothers me as well. Some people can’t help that AND rococo fashion was actually all about cleavage. It’s a topic of constant debate but I don’t personally care that much.

I think the woman making the documentary may have been asking those particular questions that may have insinuated she thought it was a fetish or had something to do with the book ‘Lolita’ to give the women the opportunity to answer the questions to counter those ideas people may have in a documentary and getting the real answers out there.

Not a rule but its ok to take your time. No one has built their wardrobe over night. You dont need to buy a whole coord all at once. I have known so so many people who have rushed to buy their first coord for an event/con. You can really tell in the exacution of it on that day. I am not lolita but I am a romantic/victorian goth so I am always meeting those into lolita. I have also seen this rushing when people want to "get into" goth. Its not a race. Its a life time subculture/fashion that will always be here for you.

I think one of the fundamental rules of lolita fashion is wearing a petticoat to reach the signature silhouette, BUT I also have spoken to lolitas with disabilities who couldn't wear petticoats due to e.g. using a wheelchair (a wheelchair user lolita once told me she'd constantly have to worry about flashing people) and to me that is 100% valid. I think this goes to show that ultimately you can break some rules of lolita when you're still sticking to the main concepts of it, especially if you do so to accommodate for disabilities. As a result, the only absolutely unbreakable rules for me are wearing cheap costume grade satin or other clearly cheap fabrics that go against the refined look of the fashion and sexualising the fashion with low cut tops or miniskirts. Also, I'm a beginner nonbinary lolita from The Netherlands and haven't really been to any meetups due to not having a complete coord yet (the headwear is a nightmare to figure out for my first coord), but am in contact with some fellow Dutch lolitas online. I definitely want to find a way to be more active with meetups. The only issue is that Dutch lolitas seem to organise meetups exclusively on FaceBook and I hate that site, so I got plain lucky that I met some fellow Dutch lolitas outside of it.

Hey I am a beginner lolita from the Netherlands too. I did not even know there was a Dutch EGL community on Facebook haha I am so poorly informed on Facebook groups and all that. I would like to go to a meetup once, but I just find it very intimidating. Mostly because I am a very shy person and because I am too scared my coord wouldn't meet their standards. Anyway if you'd like to get in touch, feel free to do so. ☺

I'm not a lolita but I am a kawaii fashion wearer in The Netherlands! Dutch people are quick to find something 'strange/intriguing' once it doesn't fit the norm, though I get a lot of genuinely interested people asking me questions or giving me compliments ^^ Dutch people are very direct, so if they like something they'll express they like it and if they dislike something, you bet they'll let you know (through multiple different ways). Though besides comments from teenagers and intense stares from people I've never had a really bad experience! I've heard there is a large lolita community in the Netherlands and I've spotted lolitas at cons and on the street before, but kawaii fashion is still not common at all x)

Lor, I'm part of the Dutch Lolita community and have actually shopped at this shop before. It was my first time buying Lolita. The shop owner has made a Lolita event (tickets are all sold out) that is going to be Angelic Pretty's debut in the Netherlands and I'm counting down the days. There will be other vendors/designers like Lady Sloth, Violet Fane, Peppermint Fox, Triple Fortune all as guests and there is food, a fashion show, activities, a design contest. I could go on but I sound like a commercial. My wallet will suffer but my heart will explode from excitement.

So glad you brought up that Lolita was a Japanese fashion inspired by European/Western clothing. I've been told that one must look to the the Big Lolita Brands to know how to dress "properly", esp. for creative types who sew their clothes. Wouldn't it be more authentic to look to the same historical sources that inspired the fashion in the first place?
@ladylibrum7145
@ladylibrum7145 4 года назад
@Lapis-Lazuli Grenat Apparently so nowadays. I suppose it all depends on those who design for the Brands, what creative wellspring they are drawing from. Hopefully the water stays fresh, so to speak. I don't suppose they have any interest in potentially losing customers by introducing too many novelties (or modifications, as you say) or venturing outside the standard "conventions" of the fashion. If they wanted to sell people on the look of stiff Elizabethan neck ruffs, or pointy medieval headwear.. iconic looks from history, for example, those might be financial disasters if nobody buys. ( I picked the wrong eras for the silhouette of Lolita, I know) But ironically, if those looks were to become popular enough first on the streets, then the Brands might be able to ride the wave of popularity.. as long as it was financially viable for them. Those who design for the Brands have to produce ideas that will sell, and not run the risk of making too many "modifications" that would scare people off. To look to Brands to define what makes an outfit a "proper" Lolita co-ord is to reduce one's appearance to the standard of entities whose main concern is money, not creative innovation... I guess that's what I was trying to say, as a creative person myself. (Not saying Handmade or Brand Paid is better or lesser than the other)

I'm glad you showed summertales boutique's strike a pose event! I loved their last event and am looking forward to this one.. At every meet I've been there are people who have been in the fashion for a decade and completely new people. There's a lot of variety in styles and types of people in the comm. I've noticed quite a few of the OG members travel around europe to attend different lolita events. The old shool resurgence also shows in our comm, with old shool meets and many people wearing the style.

I think the rule that comes before everything else and applies to every style is quality. Don’t pick a garment if the quality is subpar, etc. because it’s important to assert the established nature of this fashion. That people put a lot of time and care and pride into producing it. It just boosts the overall confidence of the look.

I would say "demureness" or "loudness" depends on the genre, accessories, and your personality. The color schemes of Sweet Lolita, which might include both pastels and primaries, might be considered "loud" esp if heavily accessorized. A less "kawaii" and colorful classic or gothic style which features a more muted palette, or black, might lean towards demureness.
@audreym3404
@audreym3404 4 года назад
Agree :) It really depends on individual taste and even on the mood of the day. I like how she described it as "demure" over all other adjectives especially since the journalist was trying to juxtapose it against Nabakov's book and fetishism. That is the main thing I would focus on given all the public misconceptions regarding lolita fashion. She could have gone a little more in depth about individual expression I guess. But I thought it was well done given how short the video was on introducing and debunking common misconceptions regarding the fashion and comm.

I'm about a month into my lolita journey and what I've antiquated as "rules" per say depends on the level of, I guess, casualness? So OTT is going to be different from casual. I level them as follows... 1. OTT - the whole nine yards, but just a bit more aka petticoat, bloud, bloomers, tights, dress, head piece, wig, bag, fancy shoes, accessories out the wazoo 2. Good ol' trusty coord - dress, petticoat, stockings, blouse, bag, head piece, fancier shoes, accessories 3. Simple - dress, petticoat, toned down blouse, not necessarily a head piece, maybe just a necklace or some bracelets, socks or stockings or ankle socks 4. Casual - dress, I don't think it needs a petticoat, plain blouse, socks or ankle socks, an accessory or two (basically something you would wear to run errands haha) I'm probably forgetting some pieces but you get the general idea

lolita rules, imo, were just meant as a guideline but we tend to forget that lolita /IS/ a street fashion and each individual is going to find inspiration in different things. its okay to project your inspo into your coordinate. Ex: I personally take industrial and ero gothic appeal into count when building my coordinates. I love extremely high heels, harnesses and 7lbs of makeup. My personal style is influenced by drag-like theatrics and it takes a lot of effort to have my inspos come through my coords. If anything I'd closely identify my style as camp as opposed to an elegant Gothic lolita. Expression is and always will be an option for people that are brave enough to step out of a full set ╮(´・ ・` )╭ I guess what I mean to say is, yes: there are general rules regarding its silhouette and components But no: you are not limited to the normal aesthetic of whatever sub style you're interested in. (@herausputzen on ig if anyone is interested as to what I meant when describing my style*

The most important rules for me right now are: have a petticoat and have some sort of head wear. I've been more focused on the feel of an outfit now rather than the rules. It just seems to make the fashion more fun for me. Although, I would not recommend just following these two rules to a newbie. I feel like the rules question depends from person to person based on experience, coordination skills, and understanding the elements that actually make something lolita.

hope u feel better soon lor!! luv u!!! 💖💕💓 ps i think I’ve sent u an email abt this before and idk if u even take react recommendations by comments?? but like,, u should check out the show ‘100% hotter’ - it’s a makeunder show and it’s really mean and negative towards alt fashions including lolita so I think it would make an interesting and informative lolita reacts episode!

I think the most important rules are to wear a petticoat and also to have some sort of decoration(s)/accessories and/or elaborate hairstyle on your head. Coords look odd when everything else is decked out except one area

Im a Lolita living in the Netherlands :D Im also going to the Summertales Strike a Pose Event! :D I cant wait. Im not as active in the comm anymore but what I know is that the comm is quite active and there are lots of meets! :D The Summertales Boutique events are my favorite! :D I believe the Netherlands was also the first European country to have a Lolita shop (Mfashion) and also hosted Misako and RinRin Doll at Kawaii Weekend back in the day! :D

my #1 rule and also one of the first things I bought when I started out in the fashion is/was a petticoat. the shape of the skirt is basic element to me. after that follows some kind of legwear, whether it be ankle socks or uni coloured tights. no blouse is ok for me if it matches the overall look or if it's 40+ degree celsius outside.

For me the most important lolita rules would be to have a petticoat (for the silhouette) and also matching accessories. I like simple/old school looks but there should be some accessories to complete the look. In summer I love those drop-down- blouses that give you sleeves but don't cover your shoulders. I think the keep the overall lolita silhouette while letting me breathe and not overheat too.

I can relate so much to having blinders on when out in public. I've been into alternative fashion for the last decade and more recently lolita and I generally don't notice most of the time when people are staring or making comments. If I go out with my mom, she'll comment on someone who won't stop staring and most of the time I just shrug and say I didn't notice.

I hate when people talk about Lolita fashion as if it's only for women. Lolita is for every gender, and the whole "return to femininity" narrative doesn't apply to all Lolitas. Sometimes, you just wanna be cute, and cuteness is gender neutral!

I think that the host mentioned the book because it’s an elephant in the room so to speak, and she wanted to give the person that she was interviewing a chance to address it.

I have gone out dressed as everything from a pirate to Tudor lady to a handmaid from Handmaids Tale. I’ve pumped gas, gone grocery shopping, eaten in restaurants and picked up necessities at a hardware shop. While in in a baby Lolita phase and getting ready to start my first cord, I can’t imagine that wearing this fashion will change how I am affected by people out in public.

Petticoats are pretty important to me, otherwise, I thinkfinding your signature is important.

1:55 Refinery29 usually has good videos about these types of fashions. They did a whole video on Decora where they interviewed a Decora model and they did a video with the guy who made Menharachan and interviewed many people on that one too.

I feel like you could do Lolita without a petticoat (although that might just end up being otome) and possibly not a blouse. But a headpiece/elaborate hair I think is crucial to pull everything together

One of my friends is from Belgium and he and his friends all wear stuff like tails, ears, collars etc in public and he has told me that they get looks in public yeah, but not everyone is rude to them. In fact, especially when in a group of people dressed similar, strangers will sometimes compliment their tails or ask for pictures, which I think is super wholesome and warms my heart. I'm personally not too into lolita but oof my crippling anxiety is too much, I can't imagine wearing stuff like that in public, especially alone. I do love alternative fashion and hope that someday I'll be able to work up the courage to just wear whatever the fuck I want in public. Anyone who wears lolita or anything similar in public is so brave
