As of November 2021, Holly and I are no longer together. We are still on good terms and friends but no longer a couple. I hope that out of respect for both of us, you continue the same generous kindness to us individually that you’ve expressed over the years. Please respect whatever boundaries Holly decides to make with the internet. I am grateful for her past involvement in my content.

I love how much research Safiya puts into videos like this. It's clear that she doesn't just jump on trends to get clicks. She tries her best to learn a bit about what she's discussing. As much as I enjoy seeing you cringe at poorly researched videos, it's also really charming to see you both so excited about her participating in something you love.

A huge pet peeve is when people try doing videos like this but half ass it so hard and if it doesn’t work they title the video like it was a success and at the end of the video they’re like “oh sorry I kinda messed up but oh well hope you enjoyed”

It's really admirable how much effort she puts into her videos! I once saw someone make a post/meme about "stupid, low effort" videos and using some of her thumbnails for it (like the tall Ugg boots) and it genuinely bothered me because that person had very clearly not watched her videos. I get that at first glance based on just titles and thumbnails they might seem like dumb Buzzfeed tier content but her videos are genuinely impressive and even when the subject is silly she goes into details about the history of stuff, it's great!!

Saf is a tall person shopping in Japan. Clothing size is an issue and a corset helps her attain the shape.
@Ilsezwarts
@Ilsezwarts 4 года назад
I am just as tall as Saf and I don't wear a corset in lolita? The idea of having to wear a corset when tall is kinda funny to me, usually us tall lolitas are more about the long bodices and underskirts. This is also definitely a decorative corset; if it was just for the shape you'd wear it underneath. When Lor and Holly say that corsets aren't a staple, that doesn't mean it's not lolita when it is incorporated into a coord. I think she was put in the corset to advertise the shop in Laforet.

I think (part of) the reason they were allowed to film at those shops was because they went before the shopping center was fully opened and rinrin is likely friends with those workers (esp the angelic pretty ones being a model for them) and could pull a couple strings

I think it's kind of doing Abilletage dirty to say that they probably only featured them because it was easier to get permission to film at indie brands. I'm guessing Rinrin picked it because it was obvious Safiya would look better in and feel more comfortable in tall-friendly goth-ish brands, and not many of them have standalone stores these days. Moitie haven't had physical stores in years, h.NAOTO closed all theirs too, Innocent World (the other obvious tall-friendly option outside of AtePie) don't have a Harajuku location any more. There is an AatP store in Laforet basement but I'm guessing (as well as Baby maybe not giving permission) that featuring them would be a conflict of interest with Rinrin's modelling contract with Angelic Pretty - since AP and BtSSB are rivals they don't like to be featured in the same events and things. I think Abilletage made a really nice introduction since it's a halfway point between typical lolita and Safiya's usual western goth inspired style.
@HalicanDrops
@HalicanDrops 5 лет назад
We don't think there's anything wrong with the brand, I'm really quite glad to see they fit Safiya really well because that means it will probably fit me well as a tall lolita! But I think we were just surprised to see that that was the first store they toom her to, because usually when people get introduced to lolita they are shown the most well known brands first. Also as Lor pointed out, when you explain a lolita coord to someone, a corset isn't something you would ever list as a required element and that seems to be their main focus. I do get what you're saying though and I apologize for the way we worded it.
@BooksMusicMe17
@BooksMusicMe17 5 лет назад
@@HalicanDrops No need to feel bad! I didn't think you were literally insulting the brand, I just thought it was important to consider other reasons why they might have been first featured. I personally didn't think the corset mentions were odd because they've always been a big feature in gothic lolita (and now OTT classic) - I can see why the abundance of corset style design details is something that would stick out to a normie, especially when they were visible in a lot of the street snaps used as reference. Since Abilletage fit with the overall flow of the video and they made sure to mention some looks weren't really traditional lolita I didn't think it was as jarring/confusing to new viewers as, say, the segment of Refinery 29's Lolitas of Amsterdam video which ended with the host walking off in Linda Friesens 17thc inspired dresses.

I would say that corsetry is a huge aspect of lolita fashion. Even if you aren't wearing a corset per se, almost every dress features some kind of corset lacing or cinched waist and Atelier Pierrot, H. Naoto and Abilletage all heavily feature corsetry in their designs! Also most GLB Harajuku snaps have sooo many outfits featuring corsetry!

Aw, it was so adorable when you both went 'Cuuuuuuute!' at Safiya's Fancy Candy coordinate. What I was most surprised about in the whole of Safiya's video (and maybe you reacted to this too and it simply got taken out in the edit) is that she bought the outfit. Considering that this fashion is an investment, especially at first when you need all the elements (petticoat, blouse, dress, legwear, accessories etc.) and given that there are places in Harajuku specialising in lolita makeovers and rentals (even if they don't let you take it out of the shopping centre), I fully expected Safiya to do that. Or to borrow more from RinRin's wardrobe. The fact that she bought an entire coord is pleasantly surprising and I'm glad that she was able to do that directly at the shop, supporting the brands that she has featured (when she could've easily gone to ClosetChild and bought something used). I think even more so with the fact that she bought her outfit at Atelier Pierrot with Abilletage bits, both of which have items that can easily work with just regular Western goth as well as other fashions popular in the West (steampunk, general Victoriana, some retro bits, maybe even some mainstream looks with like the Abilletage corsets etc.). Hopefully her audience, even if they won't develop an interest in trying out lolita fashion specifically, might support one of these brands and incorporate it into their look. (Also btw, Wunderwelt Fleur carries Abilletage, there they are probably best known for their corset print tights, then the corsets and clothing. Given how well they looked on Safiya, it's safe to say that they are tall lolita friendly, as well as stretch well without distorting the pattern.)

I spent almost ten years in a leotard and tights, and now my preferred style when I want to wear lolita is something of a mix between ballet and gothic. (I’m also a fan of faux corsets and the illusion of corsetry) and although I’m aware that most of my ballet inspiration doesn’t really “fit” the style, I’m kind of incorporating it into my “version” so to speak.

I spent two years researching the style near obsessively before trying to use pieces I already owned to make lolita coords as there are no lolita stores in my country and online shopping is not something I trust myself to do. I kept trying for the past couple of years and stayed lurking in the community, never loosing passion for the style despite trying very different styles along the way. Two days ago I got my first ever brand piece and I owe it all to that video.

I'm so excited! As I said in the comment section of Safiya's video, it made me cry happy / relieved tears. Yes, there's a lot she didn't mention, but as you said, the video is already pretty long. Plus, what she did mention was really well researched and even if both my boyfriend and I also had the "that's not necessarily lolita per se" reaction to Abilletage, I didn't fault it and was kinda glad it was at the start so we could get it out of the way before moving on to the more quintessential lolita, so to speak. I was scared to see if there were many comments about the wrongful reputation lolita have gotten from the book's name coinciding with the fashion's name, but there weren't an overwhelming amount of them among the positive ones. However, that might've just been the timing I looked at them. If anything, I wished she would've mentioned that it tends to lean on the 'not fast fashion' side of things and linked to your video on why lolita is expensive, because I kept seeing people wondering what it cost and so on. Final note; thank you both for whipping this out so fast, I audibly gasped when I saw the notification pop up. I was actually finishing my second watch of it (I watched it the first time a good few hours ago, so wanted to see it again to really decompress and see if I missed any details when J and I watched them. It was only a few =3 .)

This video was recommended to me by the mysterious RU-vid algorithm, likely as I'm a Safiya viewer, but I'm really glad I checked you out! I love all of the details and explanations you added to the video to make it beginner-friendly to understand, and I agree with a lot of the opinions you shared even though I myself am not in the Lolita scene (she definitely needed a hat!! Even a small one!). Lolita is one of those fashions that I admire on other people but I know it's not for me, but you two are so cute that I'm definitely going to check out more of your videos and maybe add you to my weekly watchlist. Love this vid, keep making great content!

Safiyas video was my first introduction into Lolita and while I haven’t had the chance to get a Lolita outfit or do a ton of research recently I’ve been getting more interested in lolita and find it so cool, if I had not seen her video several years ago I don’t know if I would have ever really discovered it. I don't know anything about Lolita though I have heard about the fashion for years. But I guess because I watched Saf's video, this one was recommended to me (good job, ladies, I hope y'all get those views!) but I still wouldn't have connected it to the book necessarily, except maybe for the fact that Lolita fashion strikes me as youthful and the guy in the book is ... gross, to say the least? But like I said, I am a total newbie to all of this.

I know this video is like WAY OLD at this point considering it came out almost a year ago, but I'm looking back and realizing that it was because of Safiya's video that I was recommended this one and started my lolita fashion journey! Like, it's weird to think that if it weren't for Safiya's video, I would have never found this channel or even have heard of the lolita community. I've never been into fashion, but lolita is just the kind of fashion that I found myself feeling like, this was finally right. This was how I wanted to dress and present myself and just exist. Hearing Lor and Holly talk at the end of the video about how they hope that Safiya's video helps introduce new people to the community made me realize that--at least for one person--it did. Thank you, Lor, for offering such informative and awesome videos about lolita fashion and helping me as I started my lolita journey!

Hello, I remember liking kawai style since I was a teenager and loving the lolita-like dresses when reading manga. A few (well more than a few) years later, I stumbled on Safiya's video on lolita fashion and followed with your video. From then on, I tumbled in the rabbit hole (I subscribed both to you and Tyler's channels and I love the balance between your sweet real positiveness and Tyler's saltiness and sacasm). Anyway, I have now decided to start my lolita collection and I'm currently focusing on 2 outfits I fell in love with (1 skirt+blouse ensemble and one JSK) and purchasing the basics (petticoats, tights head accessories). As for now, I'm not quite looking into shoes/jewelry as I have some that might fit. Okay sorry for the long post, just wanted to say that you've inspired me! P.S.: I love both you and Holly, you make a very cute couple and the obvious love between the two of you is a delight to see.

I'm still learning about lolita and love it but haven't been brave enough to wear it yet. I agree it would have been nice to see a head accessory to balance the silhouette, however I think the main reason they opted not to was because of the beautiful corsetting in her hair 💜 otherwise I feel she would have had something but maybe didn't want to obscure the work done on her hair, which I think is sweet. I love Saf and Tyler so much so I'm really happy to see you guys reacted to this :D and I'm glad you were pleased with it.
