Great video. Ashness Bridge near Keswick was the bridge you showed. It is stunning. Would have been good to see you use and comment on the automated driving on the motorway, especially how it handled the wet weather.
As a Tesla Model Y Owner I can confirm that the Tesla supercharger network is great - I charge at home for 5p/Kwh so that's a massive bonus, the car does about 4 miles on 1 Kwh. My maths might be slightly out but thats over 550 MPG at present day petrol prices, the car its self is amazing but after having German cars for over 20 years I can see the difference in build quality but is not bad at all. Liked your honest review of the car and as I live in the North I loved to hear your thoughts on the area, Tebay is my favourite service station in the whole country and anyone passing should stop in and have a look.😀
I've only had 2 Tesla's (both Press Cars) but the build qualkity has been superb on both. I know there are consistency issues and have certainly seen some poor examples but I try to take as I find and both have been great for me. Tebay is amazing!
This summer me and my family had an epic 3 week holiday driving my model y from Nottingham to The Hague via the euro tunnel , from there drove to Paris and then onto the Rhone alps before driving back to Nottingham. I would not of contemplated this had it not been for the supercharger network. It’s amazing and gave me 100% confidence
I've had my Tesla Model 3 since March. As I live in a flat I rely on public charging. Luckily I pass a Tesla Supercharger on my way to work. As far as the car itself goes I have no complaints whatsoever. The quality and finish is good and it is great to drive. I hear so many comments about panel gaps etc. They must have built my car on a good day.
Interesting to see the Model Y covering a varied long route like this. Shows the benefits of the car and Tesla charging network together as a total solution. It would be a good repmobile with that range and charging network.
Great video.. Very interesting to see a long road trip in an EV and see the practicalities of charging it en route. Good point you made about the chargers being located where you would probably want to take a break anyway to stretch your legs and get a coffee so it didn’t encroach on your journey time.
It was great actually but I fear it would have been more of an inconvenience if we’d done it in something other than a Tesla. Great trip and great car 👍
Great video and can only imagine the time and effort that went into it. I have always been sceptical about public charging and the sheer effort I imagined it to be. Seems like Tesla and the super chargers make it easy
I’d love to if I get the chance. Unfortunately it’s impossible without sponsorship and the video views have been really poor. The video itself has made £14 so far and cost several hundred to put together.
Nice to see a review in an almost "real-life" scenario, I don't have an EV but I do regularly stop to stretch my legs in services along the route, I guess it is not too dissimilar.
Today I was supposed to do a road trip from London to Glasgow. Had a panic attack about a 7-hour trip. Will gather up the courage and try again tomorrow Maybe it's because I'm trying to cram it all in one day to get there
Maybe fiund a little hotel half way and split the journey (Stoke is probably about half way), it's an easy enough run but it gets pretty boring once youre south of the Lake District 👍
To help the cause Jim, I've just watched your excellent video again! Alas I can't afford a Tesla but would welcome further videos. Ask Dennis whether he'd be up for a sequel in a mini electric. By way of preparation he must first lose a stone in weight and to encourage healthy eating, he's only allowed salads en route (which will take about a week!) Great work!
Best part of the video is you at 6am leaving the hotel in Edinburg with a reminder to subscribe to your channel 🤣 you’re a legend, mate! On a serious note, I really enjoyed the video, hope you can do more of this in the future!
I did the same route but in reverse coming back home to Surrey down the coast road and M1, that service station on the way back supplies pies I was suprised you didn't try the wild boar pies absolutly stunning. (like a pork pie but massive) being two fat geezers an all! Great video and was interested in the Tesla charging stations as so many complain they don't exist, you showed they do.
I identify as an athlete so no pies for me, Dennis had wild boar scotch eggs in the car (amongst other things) whilst I tucked in to a packet of seeds.
Keith, two guys drove a Mk1 Nissan Leaf from John O Groats to Lands End - and back again - in 2016. They covered the 1653 miles in 48 hours. They then took a BMW i3 from Edinburgh to Monte Carlo in 60 hours. Oh, and once they'd done that, they entered and took part in the Mongolian Rally with a suitably prepared Leaf......
Well this was warts and all, I didn’t hold anything back. If we’d continued in Dennis’ £400 Fiesta that we took to Guildford it may have been quite a different video.
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru Wasn't trying to dis what you have done Jim, the Warts and all bit refered to if it had been in a non Tesla, with perhaps not such good charging ability.
@@williamlee1703 I didn’t think you were 👌. We could have charged faster at a non Tesla charger (ionity for example) but chose to stick to Tesla to make it a little more difficult.
I’ve never had one. It’d be like saying you adore diesels - there’s a big difference between a Peugeot 306d and a 540d. I’m totally objective about EVs as I as always am with any car. I really loved the car though regardless of the fuel. Thanks for watching.
Great video. Loved the presentation, very well paced, and the 16 mins flew by. The 2 big improvements that will help push EVs to the masses will be cheaper cars and denser batteries that will allow longer journeys, both of which are coming from China.
Glad you enjoyed it Richard, thanks. I think the market will change massively in the next 3 years with more availability of both new and used EV's that, although still not cheap, will be more affordable.
Another interesting video - you just need to book better weather next time! The ability to use their own dedicated charging network is a definite Tesla advantage- I can't really understand why they are going to share their charging network as this dilutes their USP as many other premium brands are catching up on range. As others have said, in the sub £35K/£250 per month sector where many motorists including myself reside, I remain unconvinced by current EV offerings and prefer the latest non plug in hybrids which allow some pure EV range for city streets and more economical fuel consumption on a longer journey. Keep up the videos - all really interesting.
Thanks for doing this trip and video. I saw a video on here where two guys took an EV and petrol car of same make/model from London to Leeds and compared the cost, and petrol was cheaper. Your point in your last video about VEL and costs for EV getting more expensive (esp over 40K) was well made. Interesting to see your journey with Tesla and just using Tesla chargers.
I know, I’m late to the party: sorry…. I watched more ads than normal as an apology 😬 Hello Dave 👋. Great vid Jim, entertaining as always 👍 I’m so old I can remember Tebay services before they perked up 🤣 Well done on the round trip you two…. I was having palpitations just looking at all that rain on the roads😳🤮 I asked Hetty if I needed to do the V- Check and she owned up to being a rally car, getaway vehicle and trainee tank! That explains her attitude with SUVs 😝🤩!
Haha, that rain was a nightmare to drive in. Thank God that day 2 was nice (when it mattered most!). Dave is Dennis by the way although his real name is Mark (I;ve just always called him Dennis but may now switch to Dave). 😃
Great video, good quality and good editing. The Tesla will be about £60k so too much for me and I've regularly done 600 miles in a diesel Mondeo in one day which cost me £1000 to purchase secondhand. 300 mile range is about where it needs to be but EVs have got to be nearer to £20k or sub-£200 PCP, though I think MG might get it there. If I get an EV now, I'll be paying 32p/kWh for home charging and saving over ICE fuel isn't much if any so staying with ICE is better for most for now. I know a couple of Audi e-tron GT owners and they bought them for the tax advantages but aren't impressed with the range at barely 200 miles.
It is a big car. I’ve got a 500e on loan at the moment and something that size would be far better for London. A bit different though! Love the model 3 by the way.
Good video Jim, raising the debate about the diminishing financial benefits of fuelling an EV over combustion engine vehicles. Personally whilst I admire the instant torque of an EV I shall be a late adopter hanging on to the bitter end I’m sure.
Sadly missed a trick the Tesla supa chargers are renowned for their reliability. A better challenge would of been general public chargers 🤷🏻♂️ With multiple apps or contactless payment that fails work it may of been a different story #justsaying
I agree but I don't have an endless pot of money to make these videos; I'd love to do this in future on a european trip but would need a generous sponsor. (FYI this video has thus far made £17 and cost several hundred to make even with free use of the Tesla chargers).
How did you find the seats and comfort? We test drove a Y at the weekend and couldn't believe how bad the seats were! The drivers seat had inconsistent thigh support and I was genuinely surprised how poor the fit an finish was for a £50k + car.... I'm sure I'll be sentenced to death by Tesla fans, but you need to sit in a Lexus NX to see how a £50k seat/fit and finish should look!!
Haha, we both really liked the seats and the fit and finish on the one I had was flawless. I’m not a fanboy either just speaking as I found. No seats compare to Lexus.
The other frustration (for me) was the speed limiter. For some reason it would disengage each time we braked (?), what the point of a speed limiter if you have to keep setting it?! I'm came away genuinely disappointed, maybe I had believed too much hype!!
Bryan, I looked at a Model 3 pre-pandemic. I could just about have gone for it if I'd pushed the boat out a bit. But like you I was aghast at the standard of some of the interior trim fits. The body panel gaps weren't a great deal better either, plus it lacked practicality for me with not having a hatchback. I went with an eNiro instead. Still happy almost 3 years on......
