Ash being Persian you have an understanding of the importance of what it means when someone is your guest. I learned in the few weeks I spent in Iran what real hospitality is, and that when a family takes you in as a guest it means much more than it does in the west. I also learned why all the other middle eastern people warn you not to party with Persians lol.

@@justtrustash Lone Survivor is a great film and probably Director Peter Berg's best. He has worked with Mark Wahlberg on 5 films including: Spenser Confidential, Mile 22, Patriots Day, and Deep Water Horizon. Another great Berg movie in the middle east is The Kingdom with Jamie Foxx, which is such an awesome action film that I highly recommend.

When Marcus Latrell came back from the war, some people broke onto his property and killed his dog. He got in his truck and chased after them and was on the phone with the police the whole time. The full 911 call is on RU-vid, and that incident and Marcus directly inspired the John Wick character

Beautiful story and loved your reaction to it.. Marcus is a gentle giant who still lives in Texas on a ranch taking care of his mom and family. Fun fact: At the beginning of the movie after we see their little sprint, you'll see a bunch of guys around a table. The one guy with sunglasses and a black beanie, is in fact the real Marcus Lutrell. Also, Lieutenant Michael P. "Murph" Murphy was awarded the Medal of Honor. There's a workout based on what he did called the Murphy challenge, which is really intense and not to mention USS Michael Murphy (DDG-112), the 62nd ship of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, named in his honor.

My dad was an Night Stalker MH-47 Chinook pilot in Afghanistan, asleep but on call when this occurred. Due to a number of factors, he was fortunately not piloting the Chinook that was shot down with the RPG, though circumstantially he very well could have been. We lost many good husbands and fathers in that Chinook, people who looked after me as if they were my family, and the mourning period for them was a heavy part of my childhood. Nothing compared to the fraternal relationships my dad lost, of course. The next few days, my dad was working with the other pilots in the Unit working to deal with the aftermath of the situation. RIP Corey Goodnature, Chris Scherkenbach, and the others who gave their lives attempting that rescue. NSDQ.

Regardless, as you said, hindsight IS 20/20. Securing the ankles wouldn't have been much of an option, given that they didn't know if comms would actually be up once they summited the mountain. There is probably a tactical reason why that wasn't a good idea. For example, four men moving through terrain like that with three hostages is hard enough. Yes a false summit is exactly what it sounds like, when you are going up a mountain and there is a large flat area on top that looks like the summit from the bottom of the slope, but when you get to the crest you see it actually extends flat for a bit and then keeps sloping upward. Usually you can’t see the second part on top till you get close enough. It can be very disheartening especially when you’re very tired or someone misread a map, or in this case you’re being chased by men with guns. Glad you guys kept that long silence after it finished. I’m sure that the man and his boy were honoured and appreciated for saving Markus as you can see the actual photo of them together at the end of the movie. I bought the dvd and there are bonus feature film of the director talking with all the parents of the soldiers and the actors as well talking with the parents. They wanted very much to do their very best in acting out what they all went through on that mission. Best war movie I ever saw. Also want to thank very soldier through all the wars throughout past wars up to now living or pasted away, thank all of them for what they did for us

The book paints a more dire picture. An insane tale overall. Just horrific for all involved. Tough to watch, tough to read. RIP. I've read Marcus' book and watched the movie several times, but your reaction genuinely brought me to tears.

This is why us Americans (well most of us anyway) love our veterans and the country they risk (and sometimes gives) there lives to protect. I don’t think we do enough for our veterans. Especially the ones with PTSD. Marcus deserves the highest honors and his team a monument to there sacrifice.

So glad you guys watched this. I believe I mentioned it in another one of your reactions. When I watched this for the first time. I couldn't contain myself. I think I may have paused it because I was crying so hard. The rocks scenes were soooo horrific to watch. So well done. Side Note. If you notice, Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg make great movies together. Peter is such a great director and story teller. Just know, if you see any movie starring Mark Wahlberg and it's to be a true story with action, just know Peter Berg is the director. You guys should check out, Deep Water Horizon & Patriots Day with Mark Wahlberg. Both are true stories.

The first day I was Afghanistan, Bagram AB, that morning I walked into the JOC RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT when the Helo trying to rescue Marcus was shot down by the RPG. That was my, "Welcome to Afghanistan!!", moment. We held the memorial, for the eight 160th SOAR guys who were killed in the helo, on July 3rd, 2005.

Funfact Marcus Luttrell (the lone survivor) actually had a role in this movie. He also has done a podcast with Joe Rogan if you wanna hear his full story.

Axe actually was shot just above his temple which in turn about took his face off, Marcus said all that was recognizable was his bottom lip. Axe couldnt see until he put an abdominal bandage on pulling his face basically back on. When Marcus and Axe got separated, they found Axe's body about 4 miles away wtih his head cut off. Marcus said thats the only way you could kill Axe and make him stop fighting. The movie also fails to show that Marcus crawled 7 miles before Goulab found and saved him and it took another 3 days for the Americans to get in and rescue him due to the environment and Taliban presence. Danny was also shot twice in the throat and couldnt talk, Marcus fireman carried him 4 or 5 times and every time he slipped he landed directly on top of Danny, Danny pulled Marcus close and told/wheezed him to "never do that again", in which the last fireman carry Marcus swung Danny into the bullet that hit him in the back of the head instantly killing him. the dead weight threw Marcus off balance and he fell off the second drop. Remember in the movie they can hear each other, but in reality it was so loud they had to read lips and and use hand signals to communicate. Murph was actually blown off that rock outcropping to the left of Marcus and Marcus heard him screaming for help so loud that Marcus could hear it over the gunfire. Marcus couldnt take that and actually threw his weapon down to cover his ears cause he couldnt stand the sound of his best friend dying and he couldnt help him. When the Helicopters came in, it was on the other side of the mountain and Marcus only heard them, he never heard that one went down til 11 days after he was rescued in the hospital. While in the village, Marcus was roughed up by the Taliban, but he never used a knife to kill anyone and even when the Taliban would attack the village, the villagers threw Marcus head first into a hole for 27 hours straight so he wouldnt be found. its a great movie but they left out tremendous details. When they shove dirt into the wounds, its to stop the bleeding cause they were out of bandages. For Additional context, Marcus was the team medic, hence why hes always looking at the wounds of the others in the movie.

My former SBS Unit (C Squadron) were on another similar operation about 150 miles away from where the Op Red Wings took place and could pick up the distorted communications traffic on our UHF radio and we would of gladly supported our U.S Naval Special Warfare brothers if we got the nod to do so!

Ash, big fan of you and your family’s reactions to great movies. I’ve watched this video several times because of how genuine it is. I’m especially touched by y’all’s reaction to this movie, as it is my favorite war film of all time. I was a U.S Marine infantryman for 6 years and I remember us passing the lone survivor book around the platoon before the movie came out. Once maybe twice I heard you refer to Mr. Gulab who saved Marcus as the taliban or that Marcus was his enemy. I know you get caught up in the moment for these reactions so I want you to know this isn’t coming from a mean spirit but Mr. Gulab wasn’t taliban, and in fact the taliban was the enemy of the villagers and U.S service men and women. A lot of the Afghan villagers had great relationships with the troops on the ground over there. Proud of y’all’s hard work and new studio vide, 🍺 cheers mate from Texas!

Marcus Luttrell went on Joe Rogan 2 years ago. He said after everything he'd been through, he was half dead and ran into some dude on the mountain. He had the tension out of his trigger and was ready to kill him and the man said "shampoo hydrate". He said that was the best sound in the world lol. This film was amazing.
