The sword market is tough to get into, but L K Chen found a niche by making swords that are both simple and elegant.

I'm actually surprised by LK Chen offering this longquan jian, as it seems for a long time he has been avoiding making swords like this. Now that perhaps after making swords covering most time period of China, he is considering making some of the swords he has been deliberately refraining from making, such as katana, and longquan jian. Interesting to see him offer a short and a long variant. It's a nice concept introduced on the Scarlet Sunrise, and it's quite nice to have options. The duanjian version isn't even that short. A 24" blade is definitely longer than wakizashi, and even some ko-tachi, it seems to be much lighter than those as well. This blade length is often found on langesmessers and dussacks. I absolutely agree that it's the right size for EDC and home defense. It's light and compact enough to carry and won't be too long to catch onto things and hit the walls and ceiling, but still has a significant reach advantage over large knives, axes, and clubs.

I love that little longsword. it's just my size. As much as I love longer blades. Still looking for the perfect two handed jian. A small blade is way more natural for me to swing. Thanks for the look at one.

The jian that Scott Rodell designed can be used for two handed but personally I prefer getting a han jian like the Xuanwu jian from hanbon forge, I just love the simple yet elegant design. I'm thinking of getting a double handed han jian and a one handed long quan jian since I love the contrast between them and how they represent distinctive time periods.

Both are excellent swords! The White Serpent is my #1 Pick and the DuanJian is a close second, it is so unique but incredibly useful!!!

The long one has a 31.5" blade (80 cm). No wonder it's a little tip heavy with such a short handle and small fittings. My longest antique Qing jian has a 31.5-32" blade but has a longer handle and Big Ace of spades guard and pommel to counterbalance the weight of the blade. These swords are kind of like the Demon Slaying swords Scott Rodell discussed on GRTC channel. The long antique ones were also a bit tip heavy in those if I recall. Overall they look beautiful. I would probably buy the short one!!!

Aren't all LK Chen swords technically Long Quan swords? I love LK Chen swords, almost certainly the best quality for the money that you can get anywhere.

This was an awesome overview of the swords and their historical context. The black leather on the jianqiao for a Qing dynasty piece would be a very appropriate contrast for the white tones in the White Serpent and Snow Peak. Some time having passed, have your thoughts on the duan jian changed? Also curious as to how the pair flows when used simultaneously, I imagine that's a great deal of fun.

Thanks! I agree, it has a good yin yang aesthetic with the White Serpent and Snow Peak! Even now, I am using the Duan Jian everyday. It is my go-to for at home training for working forms. It is really an essential sword for me. I haven't tried a dual wield with the Long Quan swords, but now that you mention it, I'll give it a shot!

Why are the swords the same price? I would think that the smaller sword would be cheaper, since its easier to make, and uses less materials than the long version.

I don't know. My guess is that the cost is determined not just by the materials but by the labor, which may take the same time to grind, polish and assemble.

swords now days making blades are much easier than it used to be, so for a real sword ur actually paying for the fittings, fit and finish, and the accuracy of handling. the materials of a 20 so inches blade length difference really doesn't cause too much, ur just paying everything else on the sword other than the blade length. Think of it like ur paying the full price for the short one, and the longer blade option is free if u prefer.
