I also recommend using a bore guide, even when cleaning from the rear. The reason I make the suggestion to clean the bore from the rear is that even the most minute imperfections at the crown of the muzzle will severely effect the projectile's exit. Crowns are often damaged due to cleaning from the muzzle. Chamber imperfections, although undesirable, have far less negative effects than do those at the muzzle. .

I wanted to thank you for this video series. I have been wanting to get into long range shhoting for a long time. I just like the challenge of it. I have sat and watched this series for 2 days and learned more from this series than any of the forums or anything else out there. Thanks you helped a noob.

Very good point. Selecting a good FFP becomes imperative and learning alternative shooting positions will be very important where vegetation is excessive.

Can't beat old school, when tech fails you can always count on pencil and paper. Gosh, so much information a person needs to know just to hit a long-range target. Thanks for sharing the knowledge!

You have a lot of liberty when choosing a sling - its the user's personal preference. For a particularly heavy rifle, I like the wide, rubberized, extremely grippy slings. There are many brands to choose from that will work great. For a battle rifle like an M16, M4, M1A, etc... I actually like the slim, no-BS, GI issued slings the best.

Thanks you, sir. I am strongly considering an onsite long range rifle course - but its a few years out most likely - too many fires going at the moment :-)
@TiborasaurusRex
@TiborasaurusRex 11 лет назад
Yes, the kestrel does a great job measuring the wind - HOWEVER - they can only read the wind at your firing position, so other methods will have to be utilized in order to determine the wind that the bullet will pass through all the way to the target. You will need to measure wind at the max oordiante as well as the target itself - at a minimum.

Sounds like I have a few things to think about for organizing my rifle bag... :) Thanks for this series. You're doing an awesome job. Your segment on optics has me thinking completely differently about it now. I'm doing a lot more research into optics for purpose rather than just looking at magnification. Problem though is I already bought a scope for my 308W Tikka, and while I know it will do the job for me, it just doesn't have a few features I would like now that I know more. Now I'm putting a lot more thought into optics for my RFB. I'm pretty much going to copy and paste your list of drag bag items and make it my shopping list... :)

For anyone who watches this from now on. You can buy ti83 calcs on amazon for like $30 used. People only buy these for college, so it's not like they see heavy use. Totally worth to have something that isn't brand new and be worried about breaking it while shooting.

Mil-dot master is great for angular conversions and range estimation, a density altitude compensator may be a handy addition.

Carry 100 rounds for my 338? But Rex, that hurts my pocketbook carrying around that much ammo at once, if I have it on hand I'll shoot it haha. Awesome video and information, thanks for taking the time brother.

@Jesuslovesamericans
@Jesuslovesamericans 4 года назад
@@scottrusinko Nothing wrong with that. That $$$$ chaching thing is why I choose the 308. I don't plan on shooting past 1000 yds. My opinion is when it comes to defensive use, you only need to be out of AK and AR range plus see them before they see you so 500 yds should do the trick. Surely that 338 can reach out father but is it worth that much money? I value that in America, we have so many options and we shooters get to decide. Another thing, my 308 is a lot lighter as is my ammo. I'm too old to be lugging around a 338 anyway. Looks that I will have to rely on shot placement using my brain more.

Handloading is a great way to go for LR shooting. You will most likely have 1particular bullet in mind that may or may not be offered in factory loaded ammunition. If you load your own, you will be able to save HUGE amounts of money and match your ammo to your rifle. I hardly ever buy new factory rifle ammo anymore. If you buy factory ammo, buying form the same lot is the best idea for our ELR purposes. It will vary from lot to lot sometimes.

2013 hodgdon data manual has write up on CFE223 powder. Keeps the bores prestine clean of copper. So much so a hundred or so rounds will remove copper from non CFE loads. Very interesting powder. For the chamberings it's suitable for.

All this stuff man I went to the 0317 school in 88 never thought that was the old days, but we ranged at 1000yrd But in my time I didnt have the poertunity or call to try a shot at any further than that actually the goal was to get close enuff to gaurantee a hit.there were times when I felt less than safe so I am happy to learn all these new fangled things cause the further away a sniper is the safer he FEELS and that is important Semper fi

The guy who did review was supposedly independent of hodgdon. Has bore scope photos of before and after. All tests are 100-200 rapid fire rounds in an AR. Pattern. Says it forms an oxide with the nearly molten copper and blows micro particles out the muzzle. Also coats bore to resist deposits. Amazing photos if they are the real deal. Back to reading in kestrel4500. Thanks for kick ass series.

Thank you very much for the video. Quite interesting. May I add something as a recommendation. Would it be better to change the red ink to purple ink? Because in low light when you use a red light from your head lamp red is very difficult or for some almost impossible to see. As a junior cartographer, I tried different inks and Purple and Black are good. Also I would highly recommend a Blue Highlighter, as under red light it is a colour you will be able to see, it will appear dark muddy, but would still be good to attract your eyes to something essential. I am not by any means a professional shooter and am disabled so don't go out much. But if one of you able bodied shooters could test this and see what you think it would be good feedback. Thank! Stay Safe!

+R.A.S. Tactical Hi. Thank you so very much for the reply and the sub. I really appreciate being able to speak to you. I did a map stationary video, which might be helpful too. Lately I have been using a green filter and have found it to be exceptional in comparison to red. Green tends to place less stress on the rods & cones in your eyes so in the field your eyes won't become startled if you go from dark to full light or vice versa. In the video I have mentioned an experiment I did. If it is helpful please let me know I shall do a separate video on it. Thank you for the feedback. Really cheered me up!!!! Warmed regards. I would reccomend the 12X, for your application sir. That will be great for 1200m-1500m. I would almost say 16X for 1500m, but not with the standard lenses. 12X will be good for 100m - 1200m and will still work at 1500m, even with tired eyes.

The main 2 things you will need from a weatherstation are the Barometric pressure and the Temperature. Check to see if the model you are looking at has a barometer in it. You dopn't need anything super-fancy. You could also do a Timex Expedition watch would give you a barometer and thermometer. The anemometer part of the Kestrel is actually not that helpful.

Any specifications on how to carry the ammo? All in the dragbag? On an "LBE", extra mags or in the pockets of your clothes in a special kind of pouch? Rex Thank you for answering my question on scopes. Another question, if I may. I notice that you have a Kestrel 4500 on the videos. I see that the 4500 is available for $180 to $200 the model with blue tooth or Horus cost $600 and with Horus & Bluetooth cost almost $800. Three questions: 1. My research shows that the 4500 is the only one that does wind direction, is that correct? 2. Would it be too immensely inefficient buy the basic unit and enter the data into my android phone? 3. If I wanted to, can I download ballistic software in a basic unit at the lasted date? Tom

Rex: I have two questions, first scopes you did not mention Leatherwood which I thought were quality, and you also did not mention Konus. Are these scopes not suited for what you are discussing? Second I should have bought this a couple years ago but Bushnell made a mil dot spotting scope that cost around $350 at the time I thought my Walmart cheapie worked just fine (Bushnell Tactical Excursion Spotting Scope 15-45x 60mm First Focal Mil-Dot Reticle) Can you recommend another in the same price range? Thank you Tom
@TiborasaurusRex
@TiborasaurusRex 10 лет назад
We briefly discussed the use of ART scopes like the Leatherwood in the optics selection videos and found them to be suitable for designated marksman type apps rather than for extreme long range precision shooting apps. Spotter? Yeah, that's good choice in that price range. You have a bit more liberty when selecting your spotter :-)

Any thoughts on using SWFA 20x as a spotting scope? I plan on fabing a rail to bipod mount. I realize that the light trans wont be as good being 42mm obj. Just figured for a lot less money I would have a mil reticle and some decent magnification. Do you think I would be compromising too much going with this vs. a 60mm obj spotter?

Thanks for the great advice to use a 12 fixed power for my older eyes. I would like your opinion as SWFA has new variable scope..SS 3-15 x42. As this scope is middle range price between a US optic and SWFA 12x, not having funds for the US Optics, would the SS 3-15 x42 variable be a solid upgrade with more flexible due to 3-15 range as SWFA are built well or am I better with the 12x fixed. For a 338 Lapua to 1200-1500 range to get the most from the caliber. I am the follow up post of 3 wks ago.
