'Rex: Yesterday I figured out what is so interesting about your tutorials. After watching close to about 1200 minutes of your Sniper 101 series, it's now clear that your informative instruction leads to your viewers feeling empowered. This past spring I spent a very short time doing my first engagements past 500 meters (except for 3 targets on iron sights with an M16 at Stewart and of course gunning on an M1A1) and considering all the factors that I was able to, given limits in equipment, I hit a milk jug and several center mass shots with a cheap cheap 30-06 and a decent mil dot scope. I have a lot more to do and learn but I know that engaging targets anywhere below the supersonic limits of any caliber I shoot will yield the results I'm looking for. Who knew someone could put it so plainly? Thank you for your service.

ohhhhh, yeah I may have miscounted or skipped a number. The missing piece was your communication gear, if you need it. Sometimes your spotter may be separated from you by a significant distance for certain missions - still need to communicate. Thanks for pointing that out. :-)
@TiborasaurusRex
@TiborasaurusRex 11 лет назад
Yes sir. There are still significant variations in MVs due to the varying friction and lubricity of copper jackets against the steel bores that change with ammo / bore temperature. Also, we'll explain how those powders are designed to be temperature resistant, but are not impervious to temp changes. More on this when we do internal ballistics.

Rex, thanks a bunch for putting all this out here for us. I had a comment about the IR thermometers. I use them quite a bit in my field for verifying steel temps in injection molds and have found that even the good ones tend to struggle with repeatability because of reflectivity on metallic surfaces (the higher the polish, the worse it seems to get). I have seen fluctuations as high as 15C in some cases and have switched completely to the contact type and get much better results.

Thanks for the video series. I have been into 3 gun and USPSA for a couple years, but I have been wanting to expand my horizon to become a more well rounded shooter. Recently I found myself wanting to cut my teeth in long range, but didn't have a clue where to begin. I thought I would need to get a better rifle, but I have decided to keep my Savage Model 10 in 308. Now I feel my money will be better spent on a nice optic(probably US Optic 3-17). I live in Florida so 1,000 yards is about it.

IR thermometer & chronograph are very important even at 800m, Mildot master and a calculator, notebooks, etc... You don't need the Kestrel anemometer. You can pick up a camping analogue barometer for cheap. Bipod is very good to have. Won't need a compass.
@TiborasaurusRex
@TiborasaurusRex 11 лет назад
Great question... I'd really try to compel you to use a straight 10X optic for your 20" .308. That's what I run on my .308, my .243 Win, and my 7mm Mag. That's what the USMC runs on their M40 .308s, and what the US Army runs on their M24 .308s. I wouldn't mess around with fragile, variable powered, limited field of view high magnification optics - unless you have $2.5K and up to burn. Pick one of the models I cleared on my optics videos and you should be golden :-)

That would be a great choice. You may want to consider picking it up sooner than later, there is a possibility that "sniper scopes" are on the verge of being taken on the civilian market. US Optics in particular is one company that may not be available for sale much longer, people are complaining about them selling to civilians and it depends on how all the politics pans out.

Been watching your series and it's really cool so far. A thought I had was why not write your own ballistic software? You're carrying a graphing calculator already and those things are pretty easy to program for, especially if all you're doing is just running through a series of equations. You could put your charts into the calculator and have it save them and then just input your variables and run it. And if you find you need to make a correction, you can always just change the charts or the software yourself. I work in software though so it's particularly interesting to me.

Very good resource video. As far as corrosion in electronic devices, I just remove the batteries when I store them at home. I have the Casio Pathfinder for my Baro and Temp and it works good unless I just got done running or something then it reads hotter then it really is.

These are fantastic videos and I'm generally loving them. One simple suggestion: Don't jump from the middle of one of your symposiums to the next. It's pretty obvious that you are "cutting and jumping" regarding editing. I would suggest that you simply load as much video as you possibly can, even if it means that you need to use some other platform than RU-vid. You could put edited, simplified versions on RU-vid, and the full versions on another platform which allows you to fully explain. You are a lot like me. I tend to go on and on, and do not realize how much information I'm sending to audiences. I'm not certain that it really matters if some cannot absorb all you provide. Those who DO ABSORB, are the audience you most likely are seeking to reach. I work in technology and computer programming, but even there, the audience varies considerably in terms of how much information they can absorb in a single session. Some can almost absorb nearly unlimited amounts, and others need frequent rests, or they lose track of what is provided. I hope you continue with this stuff. This is a fabulous area for shooters to understand. It's extremely deep, but it makes total sense. Thank you!

@TiborasaurusRex
@TiborasaurusRex 11 лет назад
Yeah, that would be a fairly good test. It will be a little different but it will determine whether or not the burn rate changes significantly. Be careful not to get it too hot, that could be pretty dangerous. I would go much over 100 F to test it. Maybe throw some in the fridge and keep them in a cooler until you are ready to go. Use your IR thermometer to confirm your temps and try to shoot at least 3 per temperature group to get an average.
@TiborasaurusRex
@TiborasaurusRex 11 лет назад
For long range with the .308, the American tradition has been the straight 10X. Both the M40 and the M24 sniper rifles sport straight 10s, and I would agree that is a good choice. Any more is too much for a .308. You could even go as low as 4X effectively, but I like 6Xs or 10Xs on that cartridge.

One tip on batteries corroding (lost some flashlights to that in past) is to never use alkaline batteries. Use Energizer ultimate lithium. They don't leak and work extremely well in cold weather. I also hear that rechargeables are good for leak resistance. I use the ultimates in my dot sights, cameras, and lights

Also the Kestrels aren't designed to keep the batteries for long periods of time (a bit like a Maglite torches). I store my batteries next to the Kestrel in the plastic case that comes with the wind meter. Failing this you could store them with a plastic case, I have found my Leica 1600 LRF only ranges accurately out to 1000m for vehicle size targets with high reflectivity. 600 - 800m max with AR-500 ISPC sized silhouettes locked into a Manfrotto tripod. The thermo/baro watches (G Shock GDF-100) I have found are ok but you have to take them of your wrist, hang it in the shade and recalibrate every 3 - 6 months. Thanks for pointing me towards that artillery manual and keep those videos coming!

I like your attitude towards not using a BSD all the time. In fact I like old school and think it should be learned at a proficient level with pencil and paper before dumming down. I feel the same way about learning land nav, proficiency in compass and map before GPS.

Unfortunately, at this time, these kinds of ballistic tables are not available for sale. Certainly - you can purchase other kinds of much more simple ballistic tables, but not ones that account for all the variables we are going to cover. Very soon in this series, we will walk you through the process of setting up all these various ballistic tables and tuning them to your unique equipment combination. At extreme range, two similar rifles with the same ammo can shoot quite differently.

@TiborasaurusRex
@TiborasaurusRex 11 лет назад
Yeah, especially with the lower end Newcons, expect adequate reflectivity on organic targets, like in shrublands or forest, at 50% of the advertised range. In urban settings, you get better reflectivity. Mine can do over 2000m if the ATM conditions are correct and the battery is full, but often its limited to only 1100m or so.

As long as you are directly measuring the pressure and it has not yet been 'corrected' for altitude, you should be good to go - so any field barometer should work fine.

I do not yey offer a live class, but it is in the works. Other Civi side classes??? They are so hit and miss depending on the exact instructor. Some instructors are really good and some are considerable less than good. But I'm sure you could learn a lot by hanging out with other LR shooters and any class you would attend. Lots of experience there sometimes.
@TiborasaurusRex

Some ammunitions are designed to be resistant to temperature changes. However they were designed using certain barrel lengths and cartridge loadings so that the burn rate would produce the appropriate pressure curve. Yeah, i would still test it... a chrony will show you how close they came to accomplishing this in your rifle.

The Steiner M22s and M17s have mil scale reticles in them, but they are at a pretty crude scale, designed more for fire support and directing field artillery. I haven’t yet seen a set of binoculars equipped with mil dots spaced every mil apart. If you find some, please let me know.

The only problem I have with the wristwatch thermometers (I have two) is that they're skewed from the heat transfer of your body heat to the watch, they can be off from 1 degree to as much as 10 degrees depending on how hot you are running (like if you just finished walking a ways to your ffp) although the barometer is a nice feature

Another great addition bro. 2 quick questions... No number 28? And what do you think about the MOLLE Condor shooting mat? I have a Voodoo Tactical bag for my M4 and love it. I was considering the Condor thought to be able to lay on it as well. Only thing about the Condor is not sure about where the chrono would go and possible not have enough pouches for all the gear. Maybe have to take a second bag anyways I figured for water/food/first aid etc. The Condor might be nice? What say you? :) Thanks

Kestrel has released a formal statement, that says all new Kestrels will ship with Lithium batteries, and you should ONLY use Lithium replacement batteries in your unit. It solves the corrosion issue. The problem stems from the fact the Kestrel units are never totally "off". They track the baro and other parameters even while "off". That low-current constant draw can/will cause alkaline batteries to leak, ruining your Kestrel.

Good stuff bro. Hopefully that Savage 110 fcp .338 lapua will still be around when I can afford to take her off the shelf. I did the math on the powder. Since there is 7000 grains of powder in a pound of powder, and a 300gr lapua bullet can take 92 grains per round, it will take two 8 pound kegs of powder to give me 1000 rounds of Lapua fun. Yes ...16 pounds of H1000. With all that is going on in legislation, I will buy everything I need at once so as not to get stuck with something I can't use.

Yeah, you could try it, but like I said, it might be hard to range using those binoculars. Perhaps you could find a good quality QD mount for your scope so you can remove it from the rifle and practice using the actual reticle you'll be using, that would be the best practice you can do. Then confirm your ranges with GPS or LASER to see how you are doing. Just try to avoid making people uncomfortable or nervous. Use it to range uninhabited structures ;-)

I would have to disagree regarding all Chronos being the same. The reason being that Chrony Chronys use light as a requirement. When overcast or cloud cover changes your ballistic readout will change. PVM & Oheler make the best Chronys by far. Also have you had a look at the TacOps drag bag? It only caries one rifle but has a mat, straps, suppressor pocket, spotting scope and bino pocket as well as shoulder straps and crown protector. By far the best Drag Bag out.

Any GPS that can measure your position with +-3m precision and tell you how far you are from from a way point in meters will be perfect. Most GPSs now days give altitude and some give Barometric Pressure. You should find any host of appropriate GPS units for under $100 if ya look around. Find the cheapest one with these basic features and there ya go. Yeah, I need to make up some new ammo for my .243. You got it. I'll get some film. Great stuff! I am at the first steps of chasing a bucket list 1000 meter shot on 12" plate, with a rifle that I built. Recently completed the build of my LR308 (yeah not the best round, but part of the old school challenge) 24" SS fluted barrel, short free float fore-end with Atlas bi-pod and bags on the PRS end. Vortex Viper HS LR 6-24x50 FFP XLR reticle, mounts and levels. Managed to stay below $2500 including glass. Zeroed at 200 and on the way to some 500M shooting as soon as I get a good spotter to hump that dam plate. I started old school iron sites M14 @ 500 yards with the Marine Corps in the mid 60s so I agree with the KISS principles, add the tech later. Your honest thoughts on my choices? Once again thanks for the great stuff. I'll be picking thru your vids as I go after that goal.

Wish I could find another person that's half interested in LR shooting. I'm in Twin Falls, Idaho and figured there'd be a bunch. No luck. I think you're on to a relatively easy shot. Once your barrel is broken in/ established copper equilibrium, shouldn't be too difficult to hit your target. Are you hand-loading? Have a chronograph yet? The ballistics vids in this series are fantastic. JBM ballistics is a great program.

Amen to that. I couldn't imagine what would happen to this generation if a serious solar would ever hit and take out the power for more than 5 minutes... not pretty.

Not a super crucial decision - most any chronograph you can find will work more than fine. You don't really need any fancy models. For the IR thermometer, I would avoid the super compact pocket sized models like the little blue one I show here - the batteries seem to last 5 minutes. Pick up a half descent quality full sized IR thermometer at the auto supply store and you'll be good.

To maximize range on a L129a1 (LMT MWS) 762x51. 1/10 twist 18" would you recommend a variable zoom scope over a Acog MGO or Elcan?

They are complaining about the military issue optics, so no, the SWFA SS10XM would not be safe. Bolt actions - its hard to say, they are talking about redefining 'assault rifles' and doing a 1 point system this time, so a bolt action with a detectable mag and the wrong stock may be on the list, we'll have to see.

Hey Rex, What spotting scope are you using in the majority of your videos? You mention M49 but I cant seem to find the model that you use.

I'm also wondering about this. I have a Burris Landmark 20x50 that looks identical in shape to the one Rex is using here but I doubt that's the one he is using. It is not high quality glass. It's cheap and small and I like it for that reason but with my 8x swarovski binoculars I see more detail at the same distance.With the Burris 20x50 bullet holes can be hard to spot in paper at 100yds. Rex's setup looks so sweet with that sturdy but compact tripod with three way geared tripod head and that small scope mounted on there.

The Newcon LRF you have i assume is the 2200si model. Have you had experience with their lesser models? cost wise i was looking at the 1500 model and assuming it will do 800-900 yards.

How much of this would be relevant and usefull to sub 800 yard hunting? More specifically bigger game from small deer to moose.
