The Brescia Spadona could have all the martial utility of a spoon and I'd still want one. Its such a treat that the original survived.

Good Gods, a HEMA channel with good production quality O_O In all seriousness, love the video. I'm hoping some day to get a Steward, which is essentially the less flashy version of your XIIIA, or a Ringeck. As a Liechtenauer practitioner, I find the Ringeck very well suited for such a thrusty system.
@TZLongsword_HEMA
@TZLongsword_HEMA 7 лет назад
Thanks, that's a wonderful compliment, considering this exactly what my filmographer and I are trying to accomplish (even with, currently, zero budget) - useful content, and high-quality delivery! As for the Steward, one of my students has one of those. Definitely like that sword, as I do the Ringeck. Just be wary of course that the thrustier the sword, the more it will make you work in the cut!

TZLongswordWay I figure it, if I get a thrusty sword to go with my current XIIIA greatsword, it will balance my practice. Besides, if I can get the mechanics right, I can use any sword I want, feasibly :)

Great, great video. I've been wanting an Albion, but I think I will fill the wait in with a CS hand and a half just to learn technique with something not so..."self-correcting" as you say. You have a very concise, informative and clear way of communicating, I congratulate you on your channel and thank you for the information.

Great video!! I am between a rock and a hard place on two of these: The Crécy and the Viceroy. On one hand, I love the simple design of the Crécy and how it's the cutting workhorse and well within my budget, but it's similar to a sword I already own: the Baron. On the other hand, the Viceroy is so different from other swords I own, and it looks like a fantastic cutter, but is nearly twice the cost of the Crécy.
@FoardenotFord

Excellent video. I currently own the Albion Lancaster, which is a great single handed arming sword. I've been interested in getting a longsword with more of a cutting slant - I certainly will consider the Crecy and Viceroy for the purpose of practicing technique, in addition to the Principe, which was my first choice. Never thought that it may in fact be too easy to cut with, but you make a good point about the Alexandria, which has the same blade

Amazing stuff Tristan! This video has been very helpful to me, trying to pick the right sword. the Viceroy is my dream sword, and what you said about it just reinforced that. It would be amazing if you could do a review on it, maybe talk about the ricasso a bit because I know I for one, know very little about what that does for the sword.

Hi there Tristan! Excellent production quality, just wanted to point out a couple things however There's a static buzz for when you're talking, which wouldn't be too bad but it cuts and restarts between clips. Perhaps another run of noise removal would fix it, and improve continuity between scenes. Although I like that there's a zoom between thoughts to reduce monotony, having it artificially done via zooming into the clip in post greatly reduces quality. Then again, I'm a stickler for these things, overall the production looks great! Looking forward to more.

As a training sword for cutting i would not suggest it for the same reasons as the Alexandria. I own one, and it cuts so insanely well that my friend, who has no experience whatsoever with swords, was able to cut a soaked straw beach mat most of the way through his first go (albeit not particularly cleanly). That said, from a collection standpoint it is a really incredibly wonderful piece.

The Albion Baron falls into the "great cutter but might be a little self-correcting" category. I use one in competition cutting, but prefer other weapons for general-purpose "dry" practice with sharps. Sword wind volume for the Baron is on the lower side. (very flat, wide blade and the fuller doesn't add much to the sword wind) The grip is comfortable. I have somewhat large hands and don't feel the need to scrunch them up when I cut. The Fiore and the Crecy can have that issue a bit if your hands are on the larger side, although I've come to actually really like a smaller grip, once I got the hang of it. The wheel pommel is nice. I like wheel pommels, but that's another story. The Pommel's got a crusader's cross engraved in the side if you're into that type of thing (I'm not). Historically, it's a Sword of War that predates the early Liechtenauer manuscripts by about a century or two (give or take) and it can be good for practicing most early KdF techniques, but it's not at all good for techniques involving half-swording. It's a good sword for a medium-to-large-build person, but people with smaller builds may find it a bit on the unwieldy side -- due to a combination of it's weight, the length, and it's wobbilyness. (not a good word, but I mean the general tendency of a sword to flex when changing the plane or edge of the cut) tl;dr: Well-constructed and well-designed sword on the mid-range albion (just over $1k) line. Very nice cutting sword for a mid-large-sized fencer, although not fantastic for sword-wind. Not ideal for half-sword techniques, but surely usable for study of KdF.

@Erick_Bloodaxe

I've cut with two Albion type XVs (the Fiore and Agincourt) as well as the Early you have here and I agree with you about these swords. I find that cutting with the Fiore and Early type blades requires popper body mechanics and as little thought as possible. My first cut is always the most natural and then I start to try and concentrate and then those types seem to seriously punish any minute variance in edge alignment. I absolutely love their aesthetic though. I have a Kingmaker which has the XVIII blade like the Early, but the shorter handle makes cutting completely through a tatami much more challenging. That makes me thing how interested I would be in a video about different test cutting targets. Do you use a variety or are tatami your primary target? If so, why? You break things down into how they relate to training so this would be a valuable topic, I think.

I'm torn between the Viceroy and the Brescia Spadona. It will be my first sword. Possibly the last, time will tell. I know what you've said about beginners, but what would you buy? Just to complicate things a little more, the Mercenary speaks to me. It’s no nonsense design along with agility and light weight as well as limited edition status is appealing. What say you?

Hello Tristan, I follow your videos since a few months, you make awesome work and vidéos ! And I have a question for you. I just ordered an Albion Crecy some days ago. I can't wait to receive it. But yesterday I read a review on the Crecy saying that the sword was kinda fragile because of its tip which is too accute (and so it will bend at the slightest impact). I'd like to have your feedback on this ?
@ArizonaTengu

What's your thoughts on The Albion Sevante sword? Just trying to get some feedback before it's delivered to me. Which is a custom one based on that sword type hopefully in a few months. Different guard and pommel though. I've only got some experience with the Albion Ringeck. Which I own of course. Of which I really should get training for sword fighting.

I appreciate the informative video. Thank you. I have an interest in the Albion Earl, as you mentioned, mostly for aesthetic reasons. After the sword wind analysis, you left it completely out of the video. Is there a reason that the Earl would make for a poor cutting practice sword? Also, I would love to see a full review of the Earl if you have the time to make one.
@TZLongsword_HEMA
@TZLongsword_HEMA 6 лет назад
You're very welcome, and thank you! As for the Earl, it isn't a poor cutting sword, it's just one of those middle-of-the-road longswords in terms of cutting, so I don't usually recommend that one to absolute beginners (because of the additional resistance from the hollow ground profile). However, it is a very capable cutter in good hands, and I definitely love it for its aesthetics as well. I've been meaning to do a full review of the Earl and the Regent in another comparative video. I just need to get my hands on a Regent. And another Earl (the one in the video is owned by a soldier friend currently serving in Kuwait). But stay tuned, it's going to happen!

@emarsk77

Really good video! Just a couple of minor defects you could probably correct in the next ones: 1- the camera is too close to entirely frame the sword you hold. I'd like to see the whole blade up to the tip 2- you look to a point far left of the camera, the computer screen I suppose. I would try to keep it as close as possible to the camera 3- you make me want to have ALL of those swords! I'd love to see a quick comparison of a couple your sword - at least the Fiore, the Alexandria, and the Crecy - shown side by side in full frame, so we can clearly appreciate the differences in blade and hilt. And maybe a cut or two, since you're at it ;), I bet you already have the footage for that.
@TZLongsword_HEMA
@TZLongsword_HEMA 7 лет назад
I'll bump those comments towards the filmographer/editor. Although we had full-length shots of all the swords they just didn't end up in the cut. That's a good note, however, for future videos: we'll try to make sure we've got redundant takes at different lengths for editing purposes. As far as my focus point that was mostly just where my filmographer was having me look ;) But we can play with that for future vids also.
@emarsk77

I find the Baron is more sophisticated but for brute force with no finesse the Duke does the dirty work of chopping. For trained people such as yourself the Baron moves well and shows its lightness and ease of manipulation. For less less or untrained people like myself the Duke is a brute chopper which an armored man would use to cleave his way out of bunch of men surrounding him. The main difference is the Baron is on the edge of becoming a longsword while the Duke is a Sword of War pure and simple from a much earlier era.

Any opinion on Albion's the Baron?
@MattsGreatHall
@MattsGreatHall 7 лет назад
Quick question -- and this is going to make me sound like an idiot -- but every time I use my swords for cutting practice on plastic bottles and larger plastic containers, cardboard boxes, etc, I always get scuff marks and residue on my blades. I have found it difficult to clean with a dry soft rag, oil, etc. Sometimes I have taken grey ScotchBrite pads to clean the blade. Occasionally I've had to sharpen the blades because the residue is literally on the edge and not easily removed with the pads. Is this completely normal? I've not heard people complain about cleaning a blade after using it. Maybe the necessity to resharpen, but it's a pain to have to clean gunk off the blades after only a few swings. My collection consists of only Albions, so I do my best to take care of them. Just curious about anyone's else's thoughts on this. Thanks.
@TZLongsword_HEMA
@TZLongsword_HEMA 7 лет назад
Scuffing is not uncommon, even with 'softer' media like soaked tatami. That's just a part of actually using the things. The light grey scotchbrite pads are -- I believe -- exactly what Albion uses to finish their swords, so you're doing well with them.

Hello there. I believe I'm what you would call a "beginning student", and I've been salivating over that Albion Viceroy. You said it was weighted a bit "point heavy"? Isn't that undesirable in terms of point control during combat? (So I've heard. I have yet to pick up a sword. However, I do have some martial arts background, good natural athletic ability, and I am a quick study.) Can you give me more details on the Viceroy? Maybe not directed at its suitability for a beginner, as I expect to jump in closer to an intermediate level.
@TZLongsword_HEMA
@TZLongsword_HEMA 6 лет назад
To say that the Viceroy is weighted towards the tip is by not to say that it's not agile; it just feels a bit heavier than more slender swords. One of the benefits of swords balanced like this (again, not "swords" that feel like a brick sack of s***, but are just more massive overall) is that it better teaches one to effect movement with the body, rather than relying just on arms. I definitely recommend it, and know of many others within the HEMA community who are quite happy with theirs as well. Cheers!
@notstrangerswiththee6962
@notstrangerswiththee6962 6 лет назад
TZLongsword Thanks for the quick reply. Sounds like it might be a decent choice for me, and I certainly do like the aesthetics. I'm a bit of a snob in that way, I want beauty AND functionality/reliability. I hate buying or settling for sub-par stuff. If I can bother you a bit more, have you had any contact with the Albion Regent? That is one of the others at the top of my list. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4f/Albion_Regent_Medieval_Sword_8_%286092639712%29.jpg My main question about the Regent is how practical is that pommel shape from a functionality/handling perspective? I love it aesthetically, but I have seen techniques that involve placing the palm of the hand over the pommel, and twisting or otherwise manipulating the sword. Looks like that shape might be a hinderance.
@kyleman605
@kyleman605 7 лет назад
Would an Albion Regent be an acceptable sword for a training a beginner/intermediate practitioner in mat cutting exercises?
@drach420
@drach420 7 лет назад
Kyle Edwards the regent is nearly the same sword as the Earl, which is reviewed in this video. They're both hollow-ground XVIIIb blades, and handle similarly. One thing about the regent is that some people dislike the feel of the fishtail pommel as it can potentially dig into your hands/wrists a bit as you swing, but your milage may vary.
@TZLongsword_HEMA
@TZLongsword_HEMA 7 лет назад
What Toby said, in terms of the Regent and Earl being the same blade with different furniture. Having said that, what I didn't mention explicitly in the video is that those XVIIIb-type swords are a bit resistant in the cut due to the hollow ground blade profile. All things being equal it would probably fall between the Crecy (XVIa-types) and the Fiore (XVa-types) in terms of general ease in cutting.
@Matthew_Jensen
@Matthew_Jensen 7 лет назад
I have done a bit of cutting with a Albion Svante and I have had bad luck. Have you cut tatami with any of the type XVIIIb from Albion? Do you think it should have a similar cutting ability to some of the other sword you mentioned?

Hypothetical, Your being shoved into a time machine and you cant carry a rifle with you. Whats the one Albion sword you WOULD take with you. Your only allowed 1 , LOL.. Your going to be thrust anta medieval war!. I know this is a silly scenario but what are you bringing and why? Thanks for the great Vid again !
@deployeddadtv699
@deployeddadtv699 6 лет назад
Doc Mengele Gaddhjalt is a great sword. It was my first Albion, too. It is definitely a fun pumpkin slayer. Of the Albions I've owned, Gadd, Thegn, Laird, Castellan, Lancaster and Landgraft I think I'd take the Castellan in the time machine. The Lancaster would be my second choice and then the Landgraft. I'm not so much a practioner, and the Castellan and Lancaster both had a very versatile feel. I loved cutting with the Gadd and the Thegn, though, and the Laird has a great rep as a cutter, but I haven't gotten to swinging it much yet.
