My Dad had an XK150 3.8S drophead coupe, one of only 69 made in right-hand drive, and sold it back in the early 80s. Suffice to say, he regrets it now. Matt, you should get an XJ40 on the channel, I love them, and AJ6 3.6 and 4.0 litre engines are masterpieces and bombproof reliable, much better than the equivalent BMW and Mercedes-Benz six cylinders of the time.

In my view, Jaguars have been THE most consistently beautiful of motor cars. I love them all and was astounded by the concept cars. Some of them took beauty to a whole new level. I really like that you corrected yourself with the "very unique" comment. I respect you for that. By the way, as another person commented here, your camera use here was great. Steady, well composed and therefore very enjoyable 🙂.

Very nice indeed and good to see that some of the cars in the collection have a Coventry registration. In 1967 I owned a Mk II 3.4 manual with overdrive (890WTC), which operated on top gear only; from 1962 overdrive operated on third and top. The original name of Jaguar was Swallow Sidecars, started in Blackpool in 1922, William Lyons and his business partner, William Walmsley, being motorcycle enthusiasts. As the name implies, they made sidecars before switching to manufacturing car bodies - mainly for Standard Motors - then cars under their own name. The name Jaguar didn't appear until 1935 as the SS Jaguar 2-1/2-litre. Many people know that Jaguar bought what is today the Whitley, Coventry head office of the company from Peugeot in 1986, who had obtained it from Rootes-Chrysler UK. However, the plant was the original Coventry factory of Sir W.G. Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft (widely known as AWA) the land being purchased from the War Office in 1918 for five thousand pounds and remaining part of AWA's operations until the mid-1960's, when Rootes-Chrysler obtained it. The WWII Whitley bomber was named after both the plant and the district. They also produced guided missiles there.

Daimler, when Jaguar took over, had 2.5 and 4.5 litre versions of their V8 (the big one went in the Daimler Majestic Major). There's a story that someone at the factory tried putting the 4.5 version into a Jag Mk II. The resulting car was insanely fast. Story says that the project was terminated with extreme prejudice by Sir William himself because he didn't want the Daimler version to be faster than the Jag-engine version.

As a lifelong Jaguar fan a very interesting video, the 40's,50's & 60's car are just awesome, thanks Matt. Love the later Convertible, Coupe & X-type Estate concepts, such a shame they never made production, certainly worth a visit. However, I picked up you mislabelled the S-type next to the Daimler as a MKII !

Thanks for the walk around Matt! Very interesting cars and history. That X-Type Estate with a supercharged V6 should have been put in to production. Nice alternative for a Audi A4, BMW 3 series Touring or Mercedes Benz C class of that time.

"This is what you probably wanted to see" as you show us the XJ220, just after a brief look at the far more interesting XJ42 prototype. It wasn't a concept, it nearly became the F Type, but was cancelled late in the programme, along with the XJ41 coupe.

The blue saloon 15 minutes in is actually an S-Type: different rear styling, but also IRS, which made a big difference to the handling compared with the Mark II.

The XJ estate looks very similar to the Rover R8 Tourer. Great looking cars, they really really should've made it and also the coupe.

The Jaguar collection at the Museum underscores how Jaguar styling could do no wrong under William Lyons leadership. I've always felt the pre-war cars some of the most amazing designs that still look sophisticated as well as powerful and fast. At the end of the 20th Century, its unfortunate that an XJ40 / X300 never featured a coupe version or the exquisite Daimler convertible. I suppose the reluctance was that it likely would have cannibalized sales from the XJS. A complete treasure trove.

It is amazing how, with all due respect to BMW and Mercedes, how Jaguar didn't completely dominate the luxury car market.

Ooooh that xj40 estate is just lovely ❤❤. Im realy trying to resist the temptation to jump into an xj Before it's to late but just cant justify the road tax and fuel economy.

I wonder if they have managed to squirrel away any of the prototype XJ Electrics that got cancelled just before the car was due to be revealed. Jaguar unfortunately is once again in a bit of a mess, I really do hope they survive.

Thanks for this. Just a chance to see the beautiful Jags through the ages. One issue - you were dismissive of the ePace as just an suv and I note there was no F Pace. I have had people say “oh they are not real Jaguars”. Balderdash. Jaguar have had to follow the marketing attends since the outset or they would never have sold any cars. Tell you what Matt, I don’t live that far from you, I’ll pop up and let you drive my new F Pace SVR - you’re welcome to video it. Then tell me they’re not real Jags.
