Sometimes it's nice to get a bit retrospective about your hobby. This weekend, I'm looking back at The Lord Of The Ring: The Fellowship Of The Ring - A Strategy Battle Game from Games Workshop and my experiences with the game during those first years.
That first big, green starter set was the beginning of another incredible journey in the hobby and one that I've been walking down for a while now. I discuss the book, the miniatures that were first released with the game and what I remember from that period of the game.
So, we dive into a discussion on Elves, Men Of Gondor, playing scenarios repeatedly, doing what you could with less and the bright-eyed plans so many of us had for our collections.

What a fantastic video. Such a nice watch down memory lane. Also very relaxing as well for a Sunday evening. Thanks Ben. Hope to be able to say hello at Salute.

Cheers for watching and taking the time to comment. My hope was this might be a good thing to have on in the background, maybe with a bit of painting :) Hopefully see you at Salute!

No problem - it is a good little read to go back to and see where it all started for MESBG :)

This brings back so much nostalgia, loved the old style and layout of these books! I only got the plastic goblins and a few metal captians when I was younger so I'm glad GW have brought back the old metal sculpts through MTO's. I picked up a few metal fellowship models and they have so much character 👌🏼 The GW in Merry Hill is my local, popped in a few times to get a few paints

Yeah, it's great that we're seeing so many of the old sculpts coming back so that folks can complete collections and get them painted up. So cool that Merry Hill is your local GW! I have a lot of memories of Saturday gaming there haha

Enjoyed it a lot. Being a father myself I enjoyed the part about your dad especially. Hope I can create equally nice memories for my kids, once they get a little older.

Thank you, really enjoyed this! I and many of my school friends got this set and loved it! Very fond memories of the reversible White Dwarf issues and all the models in this range. Really enjoyed this ruleset too, quite simple and elegant. Always thought it was a bit mental that the models in the starter set completely didn’t go with each other, and half of them are from the Last Alliance scenario that virtually nobody would ever play 😂

Hah yes! It was wild how the initial Fellowship set came with such a random selection of good and bad guys. Such a great time to be in the hobby though with those first miniatures and that original Fellowship set! Thanks for watching!

Got the FotR starter box when it came out. Only starting to play the game now (having picked up various other bits and boxes along the way - including the last two starter boxes). Love the fact that so many minis from the original book are still in use (and still to scale). Mind you 20 odd years to get a game to the table is not unheard of for me!

Ah brilliant - nice to be able to dive into it and still have plenty of time. Yeah, it's so cool that the mechanics have more or less remained the same and retained that awesome feel to them. 20 years a while but worth the wait at least haha!

Hey dude, great video as always, this sort of retrospective natter is my absolute jam so thanks so much! I've actually watched this three times now because I keep forgetting to comment so it's clearly got rewatch value too! In terms of good memories of the launch of the game, my God yes, far too many to mention, I remember getting the starter set on Christmas morning 2001 and just adoring every page of that book :-) We talked at length about it and went through the book in our Fellowship special stream in December 2021 (episode 50) so I won't repeat everything from there but suffice to say I'm a big fan. It's funny that you mention the Close Encounter scenario with the goblins against the Elves and the Numenorians - I'm writing an article for SBG #13 about 20 years of the game and me and Tom played that scenario and there's even a teeny tiny bat-rep of it in the forthcoming issue - twas great fun :-) Cheers for the shout out about the Mithril edition but it wasn't me I'm afraid, must have been Nerd of the Rings. Finally, as for the Lothlorien sequence where the Goblins chase the Fellowship into the forest, if you're curious you can watch the animated storyboard of it on the Special Features of the Fellowship Extended EditionDVD, it's nothing like seeing it in the film of course but it gives you an idea of how it was going to play out - enjoy! Cheers for the video, on to the Two Towers one now! Damian

Thanks for commenting and watching! Very much looking forward to diving into that new issue of SBG when it comes out :) I knew I'd seen more of that Lothlorien sequence but couldn't remember where. Sounds like a good excuse to crack out the DVD and give it yet another watch!

Good Job Ben, enjoyed that retrospective. I often lament the last alliance was not fleshed out more, they are among the most lovely miniatures I have ever come across. I am finishing up my mega army of Moria/Uruk hai at the moment and playing around assembling a Numenor/Eregion elf force. Needs more variety.

Thanks for checking out the video :) I like the sound of that mega army! I'm still crossing my fingers that we get that Last Alliance-focused supplement and some new minis!

Unfortunately for me, this box came out a couple of months after I moved into my first flat, so funds were a bit tight. I do remember it being all the rage, but having to buy some of the models in metal and three-at-a-time was a bit off putting. I can imagine a fair few people supplementing their 240 Orc scenarios with WHFB goblins.
@BecauseOfDragons
@BecauseOfDragons Год назад
I think that was definitely the case. The metal Orcs etc would have been one hell of a pain to pick up! I understand why so many people played Balin's Tomb and Weathertop over and over again haha.

Nice ! Started playing through the scenarios last october as an excuse to paint my old minis and craft terrain. Prepping for Amon Hen atm.

Ah that's brilliant to hear! I love the thought of working through building gaming tables and collections to play each scenario in turn. I just wish I could find the time :(

@@magnifig4366 Very sage advice - I am now definitely going to be going through the Quest Of The Ringbearer book to see if I can dream up the stuff I need for an adventure :)
