Welcome to "Because Of Dragons..." My name is Ben and I work for the tabletop gaming website, OnTableTop!
This channel is here for me to provide you with my thoughts, ideas, opinions and more on aspects of the tabletop gaming world which I think deserve a bit more attention. Uploads every week!
I had several of those sets and have recently passed them onto my own kids. I think there was a Smaug one as well, that was the one I always wanted but couldn’t afford. I did also play MERP, but unfortunately lost most of the modules at uni in the 90s.
@@BecauseOfDragons yeah highly reccommend it. I saw them on etsy to begin with and their port tavern is incredible. I also love there modular castle pieces. Good for big battles like storming a castle especially in 15mm.
Someone locally started talking about this, looks solid. The oathmark orcs & Goblins go hard, they look very lord of the rings/oldschool fantasy. It is a miniature agnostic game though, right? But only has rules for men/elves/dwarfs/undead/o&g? So anything else needs to kind of piggyback on those rules I guess? I love the "build your kingdom" aspect where you can design just what you want and come up with a little narrative.
It is entirely miniatures agnostic so you can use whatever miniatures you like to make your armies. Currently, yes, official rules only exist for those factions but you could no doubt find some alternative ones out there online from the community. The build your kingdom element is really good fun and a neat way for Oathmark to set itself apart from other games in the genre :)
I'm just getting into WFRP 4e now with 2 of my buddies. We're doing mini sessions and multiple timelines so each of us get to DM for 3-5 sessions and switch. So we all get to play a bit and DM. I just did my first go round and it's really a great system. Combat feels dangerous and rewarding. There's so much information in the book, so it's a little slow just grasping everything but it does flow quite well. D100 is just so simple. Definitely excited to see how it goes long term. i just created my first character - We are playing as human sigmar priests going South to Araby on a campaign for Frederik the 3rd to bring Sigmar's word and gain a foothold in the South.
@@BecauseOfDragons yeah my campaign is in the Reikland so far, one will be in Araby and the following I think will be possibly Lustria. We're all big fans of going outside the norm so it fits! There's more to explore than just the old empire.
They truly are excellent "pulp" fantasy novels set in an amazingly dark fantasy world. I am re-reading all six omnibus books and agree, they are fantastic!
not bothered by AoS, but love my skaven and been revisiting them for the Old World. There are a couple things in that set that "cant be used" in the Old World, but im pretty sure i saw in a FB group somewhere that someone was going to make an unofficial document covering all the stuff from the old army book that the legends pdf left out. Cant wait to get my hands on that Chieftain on the giant rat, and the warlock engineer is lovely too!
Models look great, never picked up arnor. I will be honest though if pricing follows the defence of the north I won't be buying anything. Currently finishing out old projects
If you're interested in playing Arnor I would recommend looking at what Medbury offer as 3D printable alternatives to help build your army. Might be worth looking at www.etsy.com/uk/shop/ForgemasterMinis?ref=shop-header-name&listing_id=1306122215&from_page=listing§ion_id=33103007
Those skaven are wonderful, managed to update them whilst keeping a lot of the character. They still look sinister as heck. Big starter box, gonna be pricey. If it comes in at £160, that would be a lot better than I thought looking at the contents though. Thought it would be closer to £200. I like the two books rather than the all in one that Leviathan came with too
Yeah the Skaven are looking very nice - I thought I'd drop them for just Stormcast but I feel like painting them now. And yes, the book split alongside the card packs is a great idea for gaming.
Within minutes of the reveal, someone was on a local Facebook trading group looking for someone to take the Sigmarine models from the starter when it releases. And I don't blame them. I've also heard the range of models will pair nicely with the ones that came in Island of Blood (if anyone's still got that).
I got the Island of Blood box. Haven’t touched it yet. But I was wondering if it really pairs well with the new box. That is a total of 80 clan rats. I read that Skaven can have quite a lot of miniatures, but it sounds like too much. However it is truly is a Skaven tide, but it also sounds like torture to paint.
@@severintw you might struggle to fit it all into a single army (and some of those weapon teams might be gone in AoS4) but it will at least give you options plenty of options.
@@AndrewMcColl I do think the rat ogres in Island of Blood look better than the new ones. But it seems the clan rats show their age quite clearly next to the new counter parts. Wonder how the old warlock engineer and warlord look next to the new ones. And if there will be a big height difference in general.
Those were nice but yeah, unfortunately vanished into the ether - I really like these though. The Island Of Blood ones would be nice to see if you could scoop up to compare scale-wise I reckon.
That's great to hear - beyond the first set, I didn't go in for any of the big new boxes but THIS one has won me over. Especially with the new miniature designs and the way they have described the rules so far.
If we want to use the previous launch box as a loose guideline, then I think you’re undershooting the number of models in the box by a bit. There was a considerable amount of minis in the Dominion box split between the Stormcast and Kruleboys, and while we don’t know if GW will want to shrink the model quantity in the upcoming box for spearhead, 5 liberators and 10 clan rats is waaaay too small. For starters, GW is going to want both halves of the box set to be *roughly* equivalent. Not in the sense of their model count or points being equal, but in that they’ll want both sides to have about the same number of units. I think we can expect to see 2 Stormcast heroes in the box, one being the dude on the gryph beast, and the other being a model they just teased today in their count down to Thursday: a silhouette of a Stormcast model carrying a sword in one hand and torch/brazier in the other. So 2 heroes, 1 unit of prosecutors, 1 unit of Reclusians, and 2 units of 5 Liberators is probably the minimum of what we can expect. As for Skaven we can also expect 2 heroes, the warlock engineer and the guy on the rat beast, 1 unit of rat ogres, 1 unit of warplock jezzails, and then either 2 units of clan rats (which could each be 10 or 20 models, but I’m hoping for 20 per unit), or 1 unit of clan rats and 1 unit of Stormvermin.
I think you are correct that it is only 10 Clanrats. 20 would seem too many for a Spearhead box. I would guess that the GW first recommendation for a Skaven player after getting the Spreadhead box would be to get another box of 10 Clanrats... or maybe 1. Since there ia a bit of a discount on the Spearhead box, one assumes, I think GW would steer away from designs that allow a player to buy 2 Spearhead boxes for a really good start to a force... Cue the people that will prove me wrong in 3, 2,1
Hah we shall see - they have been doing some questionable things with SOME Spearhead and/or Combat Patrol boxes. Some are great whilst others just feel weird. The new T'au one was good for 40K for example
I think the expansions might have bouyed it up a bit. I know the solo expansion helped me get more out of the game that's for sure. I think it's a great premise though.
Quite possibly yeah - was using that as a measure against what we might get in the set. Will be interesting to see if there are any twists though. I am intrigued by the terrain.
I hope they nail this way to play. I would definitely pick up a couple of those boxes as painting projects but if they can see play as well that would be great. What does give me a bit of pause is the combination of that starter box probably going to cost a lot and their inability to keep cards in stock otherwise. For anyone not buying the starter, the availability of the card decks will be key to this game mode.
Yeah it's one of those modes of play which you'd hope they'd support well and make nice and replayable too. I am crossing my fingers and whilst I'm quietly confident, Combat Patrol wasn't quite as good as I'd hoped. We shall see.
Some form of tie in to Mordheim around October this year for the 25th anniversary wouldn't be a huge surprise. They'd want to focus people onto boxed warbands rather than conversions as that is more their thing these days. Still would be cool to see.
That would be a good idea - I imagine we will indeed see something specifcally themed if this idea turns into something but yeah, eager to see what's on the horizon.
I think it is nearing the mandatory time for GW to republish the game to retain copyright regarding the name of a game needs to be in use every so many years lest it slip out of trade and become publicly available. Heroquest in spain is a perfect example of this. Anyways, judging by the great work they have done combining the best elements of mordheim and MESBG into titles such as the "Legends of the..." series, I would be intrigued enough by a mordheim redux to pursue that even though warcry is my only GW game I involve myself in. Mostly because I am sure I could easily transpose models back and forth between the games. Regardless of whether they do it or not, the new skaven coming out will make a perfect opportunity to recreate mordheim using warcry if one were so inclined. The campaign system isnt as meaty as mordheim, but is no slouch either, with many various scenarios to explore to get that mordheim flavor. But until GW start releasing terrain again that was at least as good as the azyrite stuff for warcry and AoS, then we will have to rely upon third party stuff. But considering how awesome 3d printed terrain is nowadays, it may be best to go that route regardless of what GW does or does not produce.
Yeah I am hopeful that something good comes out of this and as you say, the Skaven will be perfect for good ol' Mordheim anyway! I am very tempted by a 3D Printer just for terrain purposes to help fill in the gaps within my collection.
That Launch box is going to be quite hefty as in another article WarCom have also said it will include the 2024/25 General's Handbook. in the past, haven't the latter also contained the core rules? Will be interesting to see what is included in which book.
Yeah it will be intriguing. I will be getting my hands on it as it seems like a very "complete" product compared to some of the previous offerings. Even Leviathan was lacking in a way as it didn't have terrain.
@@BecauseOfDragons It really depends on what one expects from a launch box and who it is aimed at. In the past, GW has said that a launch box is aimed at existing players, who could be expected to already have terrain and boards to play one. They differenciate starter boxes by having dice and some sort of measuring tape or stick, which new gamers can't be expected to have, but they leave out paint and other hobby products.
The 30" by 22.4" board is only 0.4" larger than a single Warcry board - if it is, indeed, larger - used the RAVAGED LANDS: SCALES OF TALAXIS box contents listing to check the size. If Warcry and Kill Team were intended to be entry points for AoS and 40K respectively, I think Combat Patrol and, to a greater extent, Spearhead are replacing those games in that function. Given GW's production issues --they are: * even closing the warehouses around the world to orders for a week starting 27th May * stopping new releases for both flavours of Horus Heresy for six months(ish) I do think that Warcry and Kill Team may hit a pause or be removed from the product line going forward.
I will be able to break out my Nightmare Quest board then to use that (alongside the one from the launch box). Yeah - I think there might be a bit of a halt to make sure AoS goes off without a hitch
The new armour designs are nicer, and slowly moving them away from the chunkier 'Sigmarine' aesthetic. I suspect the pro painters are going to have a lot of fun with those new wings. Maybe Rogue Hobbies's prismatic effect can be applied to them for extra iridescence.
How do you even play this, I was trying to create a warband and play but seems no matter how bare I go, getting more than two models in the recommended starting points seems impossible
When I made a warband for this I had two ideas. One was two "good" characters with decent kit and stats. The second was around three or four but with moderate skill. If you're playing solo they recommend going for 500 points but you can always tweak things. I think of it like Eisenhorn with maybe the one Inquisitor and perhaps one or two allies.
@@BecauseOfDragons thanks for the reply! makes sense. Yeah the game doesn’t really describe what a starting character is supposed to look like got worried about having a main skill below 6 at just having too many rounds where nothing happens
I became aware of the RPG in the early 2000s, during Warhammer Fantasy's 6th edition I believe. I never got into the tabletop as a kid in the 90s, because it was for rich kids from the big cities. But we played a little with the pdf of the 2nd edition years ago, which I "found on the web". But I had the opportunity to get the 1st edition of the RPG for free a few weeks ago and I REALLY need to break the stranglehold of the more developed setting (no vampire bloodlines, subterranean lizardmen, gnomes, fimir, zoats) and rules set (fewer and unbalanced careers, magic points). We're creating characters and dipping our toes in my simple advanture on Saturday. Any advice for this confused Hungarian?
It has been a long time since I played 1st Edition but I think a lot of it comes down to scene setting and emphasising a bit more of that classic Fantasy element from the start rather than the Warhammer that it becomes. During character creation it gives you more of a chance to talk about that but you could also just flavour things you think they want to do based on the modern take on Warhammer on something older and give it a twist.
I have no interest in AoS but a real spiritual successor to Mordheim (campaign focused rather than match play focus) would immediately get me interested in the game
As someone who is just now looking at getting into Warcry/AoS I have to say that I love the look and feel of Mordheim (don't know anything specific about the gameplay) and would be very tempted to buy in if I could play in that environment.
