I can see it being rough if you saw units being pinned down and blown apart and can't shoot, whether because you are running a bare recon drone, you already expended your ordinance, you cannot fire without approval and the LT went to take a piss fifteen minutes ago and still isn't back, or LT has to wait for approval from higher because the fire is coming from a village, etc. Kind of like I once told a shrink who asked if I had nightmares about killing people, "Only the ones that got away. I don't know what they went on to do."

Tanks never have ammo while in the motor pool or In maintenance...Only in Germany or Korea will they have ammo on the tanks at all times

Tanks only have ammo in them when we do a live fire or a gunnery. But there have been cases of tanks returning form deployment and people finding service rounds in the hull ammo stowage. Also we had an RSO once, he was an E7. He failed to properly clear a tank as it came off the range, and it had a training sabot loaded. The next crew found this out, thankfully not the hard way. They were going to do drills before their run down the lane, and the loader went to arm the switch when he noticed the breech was up. That E7 got moved to S4 after that.

Not really. I don't know about the Abrams, but a lot of the shermans were fired with a foot pedal. So if someone tripped presumably it could be fired

@@ch4z_bucks I was a kilo, I can tell you that ND firing an Abrams is really easy if you're dumb. I had a gunner that did that once and shot the berm. you have two safes, mechanical and electrical. The loader needs to arm the arming switch and shout "up", and the gunner needs to switch to main on his panel. Then he waits for the command "fire and adjust" from the commander, and shouts "on the way" when he shoots. There are two switches on the cadillac, one for firing and one below it to engage the hydraulics and move the turret. But if both safes are off, a stupid gunner could press the wrong switch by accident, or fire before being given the order to. It doesn't happen often but it does happen. Usually they get thrown off the range, and sometimes even demoted.

Have a buddy that was an Army tank maintainer stationed in Germany back in the late 70's / early 80's. He witnessed an M60 coming off the line ND the main gun (God only knows why it was still loaded) into the back of another M60 right where the turret and body meet, killing the entire crew of the second tank. Interior was as an absolute mess, as you could imagine, and they found part of the jaw of either the gunner or commander behind some control panel when it came time to clean it out. Told another story of the time they were driving down the Autobahn with an M60 on a trailer and it's escape hatch fell off. When it hit the road it bounced up directly into a BMW that was driving behind them, luckily the driver wasn't injured.

Those guys had to have provoked the attack, in which case, f**k those guys. I've done a lot of work in areas think with yotes, checking fence lines, building wind breaks, and even just poking around looking for cow skulls and shed deer antlers, you hear um and see um off in the distance but they never come close, they're just too skitish.

The civilian contractor who cleans the porta potties at the ranges, moved more than half of them a few clicks down range. After a very animated discussion with our company ops chief. The co, xo and the battalion gunner. When we came to the last day, we started our TOW shoot. So, our BN gunner came over comms, and said. "Truck 1, do you see the enemy fuel farm past TRP 1?*. I rogered back, and said. We see four blue porta potties. He says, "affirm, clear to engage". So, we yeeted a bunker buster at them. Blue water and smoke everywhere.
