This has to be one of the most understand and thorough tutorial I’ve seen. Thanks for it. Honestly I was just scratching a gear itch I was having but my money situation has been limited for a bit now, I picked up the unit, shipped to my door for $300. Wow I’m so stoked on this machine. Immediately intuitive and I watched your vid know that there’s more. There most certainly is. This is gotta be the most functional and useful budget box out there? More importantly for me, super fun. In the same box that was shipped with my Model was also the Skulpt which is funny because it’s been three day since but haven’t even plugging in yet! Too busy getting familiar with the Elektron. After your vid I’m thinking I’ve got my head around pretty much all of it? Once again thanks a million for this video. It’s really really great, I appreciate you. 🎶🖤⚡️⚡️🎛🎚

I started off writing techno with trackers back in the 90s with an IBM386, and had some trouble explaining to people exactly what and how I was doing what I was doing, aside from "video-game music stuff" Once I found the term "sample-based sequencer" all I had to do was explain what a sample was... And what a sequencer was... Good times. And a good vid comparing some neat gear.

A question about the Ctrl All function (really awesome) : So, basically when you start holding the Track button, entering the CtrlAll mode basically, the previous state of the pattern is automatically temporarily saved? Or you need to save it yourself BEFORE starting to use the CtrAll ? Thanks!

This was a great review/comparison as always, and really helps answer a lot of questions. Thanks! You make some of the best informational videos on youtube. There was one bit I found a bit misleading though. About USB Audio, I wouldn't describe the M:S as more limited, because it has USB Audio... while the Digitakt does not. This function has been present in hardware synths since about 2004, so in 2019 it's kind of a weird thing to not have. The M:S is a huge step forward in this way, because it finally fixed a major long-standing bug in Elektron's products. So I'd describe things a bit differently: The Model:Samples implements class-compliant USB Audio, which provides lossless audio in a way which "just works" automatically with virtually any software on virtually any computing device from now until the end of time. The M:S only provides only two channels though, which was an odd decision by Elektron, but it's still a step in the right direction. The Digitakt does not implement USB Audio, and has thus far mostly(*) been limited to only analog output. * As a footnote, Elektron has been working on a proprietary PC app which may be able to send lossless audio data over USB in some circumstances using a proprietary protocol. But two years after the Digitakt's release, this proprietary app still has not had a stable release, and was not even available as a beta until a month ago. It only works on two platforms so compatibility is very limited, it requires an account, it might cost extra if Elektron changes their mind again, and it is unlikely to be supported long-term. However, it may be a usable stopgap for a while until Elektron makes the device's firmware standards-compliant like they did with the Model:Samples.
@ToyKeeper
@ToyKeeper 5 лет назад
Personally, I'm fine with just analog audio... but it'd be really nice if I could transfer samples and firmware to/from my Digitakt. It doesn't have USB Storage though, so I can't do that unless I convince someone with a compatible computer to let me install Elektron's app and then use it for a few minutes. That's enough of a hassle that I only bother for major firmware updates.
@loopop
@loopop 5 лет назад
Hey - first, thanks for the first paragraph - I appreciate it. Regarding the rest - I don't think it's misleading to say MS is more limited if you look at what I think is the biggest upside of USB audio - and that's individual multitrack audio transfer for further editing. Like you, I don't mind recording analog audio if it's just the combined output of the instrument, so the whole audio interface feature is not a must. Where I think USB audio capabilities *are* important is if I've created a multi track piece that I want to further edit on a computer. In that case, having multichannel USB is a big time saver. You're right that ideally multi channel class compliant would be best, and the plugin could be an additional bonus so that people don't have to deal with aggregate devices if MS/DT only appear as class compliant interfaces. All that said, in 2019 we still see many instruments come out with USB MIDI, but no USB audio at all, so something is better than nothing, and better late than never.
@ToyKeeper
@ToyKeeper 5 лет назад
I hope it didn't come across as disrespectful, because you do fantastic work here. Your videos about synths go well beyond mere reviews and are a wonderful educational series in their own right. The world is a better place because of you. Mostly, I'm concerned about reviews which portray the latest product's standards compliance as a downgrade from the proprietary system used before. The class-compliant USB Audio in the Model:Samples appears to signal an extremely positive change in the company. I hope they will continue along that path and include it in all their future products, and reviewers have some influence over that by giving the change a warm or cold reception. Positive press here could help guide the company toward designs which are more compatible and more future-proofed. So I don't use the phrase "USB audio" to describe what the Digitakt and other Overbridge-dependent products do. I try to use wording which makes it clear that it is not the standards-compliant sort usually implied by that phrase. Rather, it's a proprietary system with proprietary baggage. And although in this case it has an expanded feature set when it works, it intentionally has a much more limited scope of where and how it can function at all. Elektron originally locked those features behind a proprietary protocol in order to offer access for an additional fee. It was kind of a customer-hostile move, and the market's response to it was very negative, so the company aborted the plan and decided not to charge additional money for it. So that makes it free as in beer. But it's still locked behind a proprietary protocol, so it's not free as in speech. It's artificially limited for reasons which are monetary rather than technological, the remnants of a failed money-making scheme. I see the Model:Samples as an opportunity to reward the company for taking steps to correct a bad decision made years ago, an attempt to make things right by replacing customer-hostile tactics with customer-friendly tactics. I don't really care much about it as a product, since it's mostly just a lightweight version of something I already have. But I care about it a lot as a sign of positive change. I hope this makes sense. You're awesome, and I'm optimistic that Elektron will continue on its path toward awesomeness too. Apologies for the wall of text.
@loopop
@loopop 5 лет назад
@@ToyKeeper no worries an again thanks for the first paragraph ;) ...and I agree with you 100% that class compliant audio is the better way to go (with overbridge as a sugar on top that saves you the trouble of aggregating audio interfaces). I don't know which reviews you're talking about that portray class compliant as being a downgrade, but lack of per track audio streaming is a limitation compared to Digitakt, which, to people who mix on a PC is important.

Thanks for the thorough review as always. The Model Samples is nice especially the polyrhythmic and aftertouch possibilities but the highly comparable Circuit released years ago still wins on scales and general playing fun if you ask me. Sample flipping is also easier to use (and fun to improvise on) compared to the single sample divided into sub samples.

@TROGULAR10000
@TROGULAR10000 5 лет назад
@@poodlebites69 In case the one you bought didn't come with OS 1.8 make sure to put it on as it adds micro-step based unquantized recording. Also individual note velocity tracking for chords (which you can disable I believe), also editable after the fact for ultra-nerdy access. I don't believe there is a piece of gear that was so good to start with that received so many relevant enhancements with each OS release. And if you want to get into the amazing soft synth and/or download patches you can make it even more like you want it. I've actually made jazz and ska backup tracks on it that sound like real people playing and also super dynamic house tracks with side chaining and weird bass. It's just crazy!!! I think you'll enjoy both machines. I love the actual sound of the Electron machines and the interface on this one seems like even me and my thick head could get into it

thanks, great as always loopop! I wonder if the loops can run infinitely without the sequencer. triggering a loop with a track pad with something like hold-mode on or holding itself? (the background is, that I don't like that the sequencer determines the loop. the same problem is with octatrack and digitakt. they trigger a loop, but it gets retriggered with the sequencer, so I have to set the bpm that it matches exactly the "perfect loop I found" & it is really annoying. similar problem is even with ableton. nobody has "calculate bpm from loop length"-function. "warp 2 bars" in simpler comes from the other side of the problem (force loop to a generic bpm) and is pretty cool, but if you have a beautiful, hazy loop, you don't necessarily hear the 2 bars. I wrote already to ableton & elektron & they offered only workarounds. The only thing that comes close is having a modular sampler (with flexible start & end points) then "end-of-loop" trigger out into a multiplier module... maybe you can understand what I am rambling about & have a tip? thaaaanx
@loopop
@loopop 5 лет назад
Yeah sorry... I don't think I understand... I mean octatrack stretches quite nicely and extracts BPM from a sample - doesn't that give you what you need? Here's a different idea, may or may not be what you want but I think is quite nice: load up a few samples from different songs you like, set decay to infinity, and the samples to loop. Then trigger the tracks just by hitting the track keys (without running the sequencer) and mess with pitches down or up (down works better), and trim start and end points, until you get wonderfully polyrhythmic mashups from whatever songs you picked. Just ignore the BPM ;) No need for a time stretch algorithm, on the contrary, pitching down will change the loop length into different polyrhythms every time.... Now I'm rambling ;)

elektron model:samples reminds me of the first sampler I fell in love with, the Akai S-20, which was pretty much Akai's answer to Roland's (Boss) Dr. Sample, both all real time, no sequencing ability, the only thing bad about the Akai device. I want one of these elektron devices, thanks for opening up about it.

well there is only one loopop. love your content. a lot of people are complaining about the model samples. i think it is a good way to get in the elektron world with the extrodinary sequencer. i am not into elektron gear until now. i always loved the possibilties but the menu diving and double/triple function workflow kept me away from the machines. the model samples could be my first elektron machine.

Thanks! People complain about everything, and this isn’t perfect, but what I think they did brilliantly here is carefully select the performance features that would be most fun to play with and make them accessible

I have both. If you want the true joys of Elektron, start with the digitakt. I just goes way deeper.

first of all, another great video. I am a big fan. I enjoy all of your presentations. I have a question. I am doing audience interactive live performances. I know that the Digitakt would be better for this purpose, but I really like a lot of the features of the M:S. Is there anyway to get live samples, like using a different capture device like the Korg sampler or any other sampers? Maybe by the time I figure all this out, I may be better to just get the Digitakt. Although the Electribe and the X/Y pad on the KP3 are pretty cool. Do you think either one of these would work to capture audience response live and get them into the Elektron M:S directly?
@loopop
@loopop 4 года назад
Thanks! MS can't capture samples at a all; all the others you mentioned go into "sample mode" when they record, so nothing else can happen. If you need to play back audio while you're sampling you need something like a Deluge or Octatrack.

The Korg MicroSampler was, to me, the greatest sampler for live use for musicians (not so much form DJs). You can still find a few used ones.

Great video ! Makes appear this new box in a more positive way than others. What would be your advice for a first groovebox that would be used and sometimes connected with a rev 2 for synth sounds ? I am a bit lost with all those boxes (electribe, Digitakt, sample Model or creating my rythmes with Ableton push...). I am a pop/ electro composer/singer. Drum box is missing to my setup and I don’t want to buy the wrong one. It will be use for songs and not for clubs so I don’t need a very complicated machine. Just have to be sure that it will match with my rev2 in midi. Thanks for your advice and for your great work.
@loopop

Thanks! They’ll all sync with a Rev2, and there’s no easy answer unfortunately other than to research which works best for you - they each have their pros and cons

Sounds like Novation Circuit could be right up your street. Easy workflow, really quick to sketch out songs. The electribe is more feature packed, but i found the menu diving and workflow so tedious. Killed all creativity. The model:samples looks really really fun tho
@stephenshumaker8444
@stephenshumaker8444 4 года назад
@@johnchesters81 I'm choosing the Model:Samples over the Circuit and Electribe as my first groovebox. The M:S can sequence up to 6 external synths via MIDI, the Circuit only one. The M:S has a screen that shows you what is going on, with the Circuit you have to memorize/imagine a lot of what is going on, and there's no consistency between knob functions. The Electribe looks nice too, but a bit dense; I like that the M:S is clearly designed for live performance, everything is so immediate. I think the Circuit is ideal for someone who wants to jam around and have fun without needing to learn anything about music production, and the M:S and Electribe are better for those who are actually trying to become musicians/producers. You can't really go wrong with any of them, they are all excellent.

Synthbox Mexico yes - each pattern is it’s own separate thing with its own samples and parameters. No parts here.

loopop you are a mensch and a gentleman. The hardest thing about op-1 is how to optimize the workflow and still be able to important and finish a project in a daw at least that’s what I struggle with. The MPC live is something of a blunt instrument compared to the elegance of elektron or teenage engineering but it’s rock solid for what it is. With the immediacy and intuitive of 80’s sampling drum computers that has been largely absent in most drum machines after the mpc 3000. It shouldn’t be dismissed just because of it’s association with rudimentary rap production. even without all the bells and whistles that of other samplers have. Sorry to rant thank you for the reply I look forward to your future videos 🖖

Hi Loopop, does model samples has the trig panning like digitakt? I see only track level panning so far.
@TheScreamingFrog916
@TheScreamingFrog916 2 года назад
You can't do it directly, but you can pan individual trigs, by using velocity levels, set to control the pan (then you can choose weather, to have velocity also control volume, or not). You can also apply LFO to panning the track. Hope they add normal per trig panning, in a future update.

Is it possible to change the sequence step length per track? So say have T1 be 12 steps, while T2 is the full 16 steps?

Can a MIDI track on the Model just send out clock to a synth with it’s own seq/arp? Maybe Track 6 is always Clock Out - and the other tracks just play drums/perc?

Could model samples be used with the rk002 smart midi cable? If a sample could be a waveform, and each track can be played via midi, it should work as a poly synth. Sort of similar to how the digitakt does it.

What Loopop he is doing at 17:55 with some trick is basically a sample lock at each step and this is before the Electron firmware update, am I right? I’m asking this because Electron has as minimum requirement for this update for Pc users the computer to be I - core 5 and I have icore3. So, my question is if I won’t be able to download and install the firmware update, at least by using with this trick can I have multiple samples per track assigned on different steps? I want to get this beauty but this is crucial for me, because only 6 tracks are kind of limited. Great review and thank you very much Loopop!

Is it possible to feed one long sample into a track and change/lock the start point per pad on the Digitakt as well? You showed it as a workaround trick that can be used on the Cycles, but didn't say whether such trick is possible on the Digitakt also.. Cheers!
