Eight minutes? We’re talking an hour at least.

I believe there have been a few moments in Legends comics where Palpatine has said to him "Will you shut the fuck up about Obi-Wan?!"

I've always seen that deep growling voice as the actual Sidious persona, when Sidious is tired of keeping up the Palpatine façade and needs to hammer a point home. You can pretty much hear Vader do a **gulp** when Sidious says "I wonder... if your thoughts *_are clear on this, Lord Vader._* " because he knows he's dangerously close to pissing off someone that can wipe the floor with him, and has no compunctions towards killing him and choosing a more worthy Apprentice.

@@mediakira6621 ROS was so confused. One minute he wants to kill Rey, the next he wants her to succeed him. Personally, I think Palpatine would have used his kindly father routine because he would have preferred a blood descendant to follow him.

Great breakdown, I started noticing every time Palpatine says “Friend” to Vader it’s almost in a demeaning and sarcastic way as if he is trying to degrade Vader.

In a way Vader is his son.

​​​​​@@marial8235 Palpatine is a psychopath and a liar, so him switching to a father figure when confronted by Rey directly and personally is kinda on brand as he also most likely is a coward especially when in his half alive state and he is willing to discard her again once he believed he became God. I mean he literally murdered his only son just so he could get her to experiment on.... There's no real confusion when you think of it. To be honest he never wanted Rey as his granddaughter he only viewed her as either material or a vessel for himself as such having her killed by Kylo Ren would benefit him as he could than transfer his soul to the body or use her in some way to create a better vessel for himself, and when confronted he merely tried to trick her into initiating the ritual herself, so there's really nothing confusing about his behaviour through out the movie if you think about it, even though it looks like his goals are inconsistent with each other it's not really the case if you understand Sidious.

Keep in mind that this is more then likely at least 10 years after revenge of the Sith because of Luke is at a least 10 or 11 in that scene .

And it’s shown earlier when he force chokes the inquisitor for letting Obi Wan escape, moving a lot faster than he normally does and raising his voice.

Vader standing straight and calming down immediately afterwards just seals the deal. It shows us, once again, that the Emperor is in control and there's nothing Vader can do about it.

@@speedracer2008Yeah, Vader backed down immediately in the face of that reproach. He was powerful and pretty much fearless, but he knew better than to provoke the Emperor’s displeasure.

Palpatine is straight up the most evil and sinister character ever created and thank god Ian Mcdiarmid was the one who really brought the character to life. I couldn’t imagine anyone else in those robes.

At like 0:19 you can clearly see he wants to be somewhere else right now.

This is a sound theory, and aligns closely with the theory that Anakin suffers from borderline personality disorder. In episode III, Anakin was not first to draw his lightsaber. He was hoping that Obi-wan would choose loyalty to him over his loyalty to the jedi, and does not consider Obi-wan an enemy until Obi-wan makes it clear he stands against Anakin. In this series, he is relentless in his pursuit of Obi-wan, but never finishes the job despite clearly being within his power to do so. He is trapped in a conflicting pattern of wanting to draw Obi-wan in and wanting to push him away, as is the case with borderline individuals. Borderline individuals suffer from a tendency to feel abandoned, and struggle to find stability in close relationships. It is clear to me that his anger towards Obi-wan is not from his past defeats, but from feeling abandoned by his master when he needed him most. And he continually seeks Obi-wan in the hopes that he will one day choose loyalty to his friend and not abandon him again. But at the same time he does not feel worthy of salvation for what he has done, and is unable to reach out directly himself for help. Instead he continually punishes himself, and a symptom of this self loathing is the need to destroy everything around him that reminds him of his past self.

His armor is his prison. Obi Wan could have ended his misery, but he spared him because he is suffering more alive. Probably some part of Vader wants death because this power didn't gave him anything.

It's interesting, but impossible, as anakin Skywalker doesn't exist at all, Darth Vader is pure evil, and only finds light when his son brings him hope again

That's master acting right there. You don't have to say or do much, but EVERYONE gets the message when you're in the room. Everyone knows exactly how your character is feeling and how to react.

This was the perfect moment to use an iconic theme like this.

It was to show that the completely psychotic and obsessed Vader is gone as he officially became the Vader from ANH.

I was more happy hearing the imperial march than I was seeing palpatine

Palpatine knows a threat when he sees it. If Obi-Wan can turn Vader back to the good side, he’s fucked. If Obi-Wan kills Vader, he’s fucked. Hence why he wanted Luke to take his father’s place because if Luke and Vader had teamed up, he’d be fucked.

Even funnier is that Ian is older and playing a younger Palpatine, whilst he was younger in ROTJ and played an older Palpatine.

@@chazo1367 Funny enough I actually thought his brief performance here matched better with RoTJ Palapatine then Prequel palpatine (speech, makeup, expressions). Not sure if that was intentional or not.

Yeah, Ian's seemed like an old man for forty years whereas Harrison Ford still seems like a middle aged guy despite now being the crankiest of cranky old men.

He went from the more grandfatherly tone to the Sith tone. This was him reminding Vader who is apprentice and who is master, merely with his tone of voice. Ian is the one and only Palpatine.

Not really. Even if you go by the comics, he already tried and failed to bring her back by this point. He literally went into the heart of the Dark Side itself and got kicked out of it. That’s when he had to accept she was gone forever.

@@rickblaine9670 if I’m correct by the time he made the final iteration of that castle of his, Vader had already given up since in the comics it opened a portal to what he wanted, but didn’t get and only tormented him. So by this point he’s already given up on Padme and is just wallowing in grief, despair, anger. So I think by this point in this scene, Vader has finally and fully gave in.

I always thought he just wanted to die

In the comics he finds out that he has a son (Luke) and realised that Palpatine lied to him after all these years of suffering. Vader wants Luke to join him and rule the galaxy together and he’s ready to take Palpatine out of the picture.

@@nextlevelenglish5858 funny thing is, I think Vader is the only apprentice Palpatine ever truly appreciated or respected, but it’s Palpatine so he’ll kill him for fun anyway as soon as it’s convenient. The ultimate psychopath.

There’s a big part of me which refuses to recognize Episodes 8 and 9 as canon. The former blatantly refuses to keep the saga’s story coherent, and the latter tries and fails miserably at damage control. That same big part of me also refuses to recognize as canon any media which exists solely to justify the absurd plot points of those two episodes. Hopefully we one day we see Episodes 8 and 9 retconned and have the saga ended properly. They even have a method to justify such a retcon, thanks to Rebels.
