Julian is determined because he has to be. He is the leader of his family at the age of 12 that scars you. His parents died his older siblings were forced to leave. It's a little bit much but at the same time he does have a reason to be this careful and wanting his family to be together.

Yay! I've been waiting for your review! I liked Julian and Emma in LM, but I loved them in LoS because the angst was amazing and I loved their progression from awkward to friends to lovers again. Personally, I find Julian the most complex love interest of all, I love that he's such a Slytherin - willing to go to any lengths for the people he loves and willing to sacrifice everything else. I just think it makes him so interesting and even though he's not my favourite love interest, he's the one I'm most intrigued by. Also, he breaks my heart when he says that he doesn't understand how he could have been so wrong about Emma loving him, oh and in literally any scene with his family when I remember that he was a baby and was raising so many kids and heading an institute. :( I love the way the Cold Peace was explored too. The parallels to the current political climate (and that of post-WW1, pre-WW2) were uncanny and gave me actual chills. I can't with the Cohort and the downworlder registry thing, it makes me so mad! I'm so glad the prejudice of the shadowhunters/clave is being shown, because it's always something that's been hinted at but never quite made the same impact because the shadowhunters we follow are 'good' so Zara and the cohort were an excellent counter to that. I love Diana and Gwyn so much! He just likes her and wants to take her on dates and I just... ship, and I don't usually find the adult relationships very interesting. Diana's story broke me too! I've been sucked into the Seelie Queen and Sebastian baby theory - Sebastian's weapon??? Will and Jem marking their heights killed me! I just... I miss them so much! I love Kit! He made me laugh so much and I love his pop culture references! Kit and Ty and Kit being so supportive and understanding of Ty hurts me. I ship Kitty so hard! They are so precious and I'm so afraid they'll accidentally become parabati. OMG 'beautiful' Ty, I literally started counting how many times he said it. YES!!! OMG YOU'RE THE FIRST PERSON I'VE SEEN TALK ABOUT MARK, KEIRAN AND CHRISTINA AS A POLY SHIP! I NEED IT! Tension and angst between the three of them is so amazing! There are no teams, only angst. Anyway, they're my favourite relationship and all three of them need to be together. Yas, the Malec family! Magnus is my favourite character I just... I love him. And Alec's character growth was just amazing to see in that scene - it destroyed me! I really hope the Magnus trilogy thing will show some of this growth in their relationship because I need more. If Magnus or Tessa die I will riot. They cannot die. I will not stand for it. Robert's death was such a shock! And when Alec was calling for him I couldn't deal with it. Livvy, my poor precious Livvy. Julian and Ty - I can't even think of this. Ty literally was just getting ready to become a parabati with her and I'm not okay. I didn't want this to happen to the Blackthorns at all. ever. We got like, two seconds of the Blackthorns all being reunited (yay for Helen and Aline finally coming back!) and I can never trust Cassandra Clare again. Woah, this is so long! Great discussion though!!! Ah - two years... :(

I really like morally grey characters like Julian. They happen to be my favorites. No one is completely good or bad and these morally grey characters are the most realistic to me. Kind of remind me of George R.R. Martin books.

When you talked about Clary's dream it reminded me that Magnus said that he too was having the same dreams that he had before The Dark War. Then I had a disturbing thought; what if Clary's dream in TMI about the two fighting angels on an icy plane, what if that wasn't about the end of Sebastian. What if that dream is about Sebastian's son?!?Also, I predict that Kieran will become the new Unseelie King or he will take over the Wild Hunt for Gywn so that Gywn can be with Dianna.

This entire review speaks to my soul. I am so worried about so many things. My poor Magnus. My poor Alec. My poor Ty. 😩

Magnus passing out made me die, and Alec defending him from Zara was awesome! Alec's situation in the end killed me. I NEED MAGNUS TO BE OKAY TOO! I bet Zara has something to do with his weakened powers. Maybe livvy's death will draw Ty closer to Kit.

Honestly, I could care less about Emma and her drams wHEN WE COULD HAVE AN ENTIRE BOOK ABOUT KIT AND TY.

I'm that one person who gives up on romances with too much drama. My solution to the Mark, Kieran and Christina love triangle is a polyamorous relationship. Mainly because it's easy and I'd love to see how it works.

I TOTALLY SUPPORT THE MARKIERTINA SHIP!!!! When I read Lady Midnight I wasn't feeling really supportive on Mark and Kieran, I thought Kieran was really possesive or something like that, and what he have done just to get Mark back in the Hunt, I was really more into Mark and Cristina there somehow, but then Perfect Diego had to arrive and ruin it, I don't really think I like the Rosales brothers at this point, but I guess we have a lot to see about them and what Jaime's secret mission was (did he mentioned it? I don't remember tbh). I'm also wondering what the Rider meant when he said Kit he knew him, that's been bothering since I finished it, it's driving me insane! Omg I have a lot of things to say too, but there's just a lot to say about it. All I can say at the moment is that I got in shock by the end, I mean, from all the Blackthorns, Livvy was like what kept Ty connected with the world and now that she's gone it's going to be harder on him (tbh I think Livvy was the target the whole book)

I do NOT ship Emma and Julian. The most boring, trope-reliant relationship ever. So frustrating because the rest of the plot and characters are stellar!

I actually really love how different Julian is as a character when compared to other male characters I've read before. He is ruthless, determined and kinda cold-ish & that's what I love about him.

I like Julian. What drives him is his love for his family and his sense of respondibility towards them. They are more important to him than The Law and by association the Clave. This is why I like him even more because in his heart of hearts he does not bow down to them and their laws. I'm all for him overthrowing everything the Clave stands for.

There's a theory that I personally like (well, not like, but it makes sense to me) that Clary is seeing Simon's parabatai rune cut at his wedding (hence how she knows it will happen soon), but in truth this will be because Julian decides to cut all the parabatai runes. UPCOMING SPOILER FOR CLOCKWORK PRINCESS And we all know Cassandra Clare did a similar thing in CP2 when Will felt his bond to Jem be cut and we as readers were led to believe Jem was dead.

Oh my Lord this book was amazing. I feel a bit like you - I've been a Clare fan since I was fifteen (now 22), but before lady midnight I kinda felt like I was...done. But Lady Midnight was amazing, and Lord of Shadows her most sophisticated work yet. She's always excelled at characters ( I think that's her strong suit) and this series has some amazing character growth. Literally EVERY character is interesting to me - everyone, from Tavvy to Bridget to Jamie and Kieran and Diana. I think Ty is one of the best characters ever, and in terms of writing inclusive and diverse books, I think that Cassie does it so well in this series. There's so much representation in terms of non-heteronormativity (lesbian, gay, bi) as well as other topics such as autism and transgender - and they're all written so effortlessly. It's a part of the characters, not the other way around, just like with people off the page. I also think Christina is such an amazing character in YA: she's genuinely kind and emphatic, and that's her strength - she's not punished for being "too kind", and other characters truly appreciate and love her for it. Such a great addition to the normally snarky Shadowhunters. Also I need to add that I think one of the things Cassie does so well is that she really dares to make her entire world grey - not black or white. Shadowhunters are not portrayed as the best thing ever (although the think so themselves, of course). I think Kit once describes them as beautiful but distant, like only people who believe completely in the rightness of what they're doing, including the cruelty that comes with it, can be. And we've seen repeatedly the way the Clave operates. When Cassie decided to use Dura Lex Sed Lex as the Shadowhunter motto, she really did take it all the way. And like you quoted - when Jules and Emma joked about shadowhunter mottos (herondales - chiseled but angsty) I love that she actually pokes fun at other characters and her own writing? Like Kit talking about cookies and cancer, giving voice to what all readers are thinking hahah. I also ship Mark + Kieran + Christina. But in lieu of that, I'm Mark+Christina trash. Mark is probably my absolutely favourite character. So many feelings and thoughts for this series! How are we going to wait until 2019!

Although the infernal devices wasn't my favourite out of the shadowhunters universe, (don't get me wrong, I still loved it)I have to say, I do have a soft spot for Jem. I think he's gorgeous.

Julian is frustrating but you have to remember he was forced to give up his childhood and had to become a parental figure for his siblings because i mean his parents died, mark was taken by the wild hunt, Helen was exiled and his uncle was Mentally unfit to care for them. so he built up walls especially to protect his family. It became easier for him too lie and do all these terrible things because his family would be separated and after everything they all went through because of the dark war i feel like he deserves some compassion this in no way excuses all the things he does but at the same time show some compassion and maybe understanding

Omg me too. I was sobbing when Emma saw the pics and the height chart and the scene where Jessamine tells kit how Tessa used to ask for will but he didn't last long .

You know how Clary and Jace are on a mission to find a "weapon" in Faerie....I think they're looking for the child of Sebastian and the Seelie Queen. The boy that Dru saw had PALE BLOND HAIR AND GREEN EYES. The only reason Sebastian had his black eyes was because of the demon blood, but before he died, or right as he died, they turned back to green. Polandbananasbooks has some great theories, one of them being that the thing that Dru used to go to Faerie, didn't just take her through space, but also through time. How else could this child be around 13 years-old? Well no one really understands Faerie Time, but it seems to go slower, we would presume, everywhere. So the only way this child could be Sebastian and the Seelie Queens's is if Dru also went through time. I also don't think it will be brought up again until the Wicked Powers, are final series. I also think the big war will be in the Wicked Powers, Kit will be are protagonist, and that's when Clary will die. Also I hope we get to see Sizzy get married in the next book, or Malec, I'd be happy for either, but I think they're going to save the Malec wedding for the series about Magnus. Which I am so excited for, we will get to read The Lost Book of the White in March I think. We will get to read that, and the first book of The Last Hours I think, before we get the last book from The Dark Artifices.

Wait so I just realized something about this Faerie boy, his description sounds familiar: Sebastian So I've seen theories that this boy might be the son of the seelie queen and Sebastian. We know that Sebastian has hidden a very powerful weapon in faerie. So what if this boy is the weapon? He has Sebastian's shadowhunter demon blood and the seelies fairy blood just imagine his powers. So about his age, time strikes different in faerie than in the human world of course he could be 13 in faerie if time moves faster there.

I don't ship Emma and Julian at all. I feel like the relationship is so forced, and it is WAY too intense. Julian is quite scary tbh, because he is WAY too intense. He's gonna break, I can feel it. But honestly I don't care about jemma at all. I just want MARK AND TY!!! Also mark, Christina and kieran. And Diana and Gwyn! Any romance that isn't jemma!

I was waiting to finish the book so I could see your review and I agree to everything you said. I don't like Emma and Julian together that much either, Julian's character is an anti-hero in a way that's not relable or likeable (like for example beginning-of-the-series' Will or Jace) and is honestly kinda scary I'd say. Mark is my favorite character this trilogy, on Lady Midnight I thought I'd dislike Cristina for coming between Kieran and Mark but she was honestly so nice and warm and endearing and the development of her relationship with Kieran got me hoping all three of them end up together (also because that's not so commonly seen on books). Cassie's love triangles are always wonderfully done, there's no hate or pettiness, or people playing one another. I thought she would've end up killing Livvy (because there wasn't anything she needed to do next book, her story with Kit was tied up and even with Ty, as he said they could be parabatai, and also because it would be more shocking to kill her than Dru or Tavy, as both are meh characters I find). Really looking forward to next book, 2 years is gonna be a long time. Sorry for the huge comment!

Okay can I just say how amazing your channel is!! I completely agree with you about your dislike towards Julian and to be honest I think that Cassandra Clare did try to orchestrate and manipulate the reader to feel like that too; like with withering heights, where the intended dislike for the characters is half of the magnificence of the book, here I think that Cassie Clare doesn't want to make reading the book easy, so she's keeping us on the edge of our seat by not only worrying about what the bad situations might do to our favourite characters like Ty and kit but by making us worry a lot about what Julian might end up doing too, and then being more invested in his relationship with Emma because we are struggling with ourselves to figure out if that's what we think is best for Emma or not....? And that's why I adore Cassie Clare. She's not just another cliche young adult author. Though her books have young adult elements they also are written so intelligently and deal with so many other issues too.

And I live Emma and Julian as individuals but not as a couple because they don’t know who they are as individuals but have grown up together and they depend on each way too much because of their trauma when they were 12yo and imo Julian’s trauma started when he was 10yo when his mother died.

Anyone remember when Julian was shot with an arrow and he shouldn't have lived through it but he did? And how Julian and Emma are supposed to have great powers that no one should? What if they used their love powers or whatever to revive her?

I just finished the book. Thank you for your review. I did like the story. But I have many thoughts about this book that seem different from your review. (Super Long) - I felt like Kit didn't have a proper time to really grieve his father. The others besides Ty seemed to act like maligning his father and him having a new name of Herondale makes up for the fact that he saw his father ripped in pieces in front of him. There was no proper grieving for me. There were a few moments but not enough of them in my opinion. - I HATE Julian and Emma as a pairing. They are the least entertaining and compelling romantic lead in any of the Mortal Instruments and company series. There is something inherently wrong about them to me. I can't put my finger on it really but it feels more like obsession with one another than love to me. - Julian is an anti-hero to me. I am having trouble connecting with him. He honestly could be the antagonist in this story if not for the Cohort, Clave, and Faire. Kieran's line about Julian having a ruthless heart was probably the most truthful line about Julian in the entire story. I think Julian realizes he may not be all that better then the people he is fighting against. He will hurt ANYONE to get what he wants. He took advantage of a mentally ill woman who has had all taken from her and was an innocent until the end. - I am so heart for Kieran in this story. He is so lost and confused this entire story hating himself for not understanding these new dynamics and not knowing why. Then he finds out why and he was crushed. Mark didn't seem all that conflicted about lying to Kieran until the lie was out. He only really had feelings about Kieran when he said they would no longer deal with each other. He seemed more about Christina in this book. Which is fine but I hated that Kieran who has loved with his entire heart really feels like the odd man out. - Christina is almost to perfect. Where are her flaws. I need more layers to her. -Kit and Ty are great. I feel bad for what happens next now that Livvy is dead. What path will they forge now. Ty who is an undiagnosed person on the Spectrum is very intriguing to read about. I find his interactions most entertaining. I love the world he is opening up to Kit and vice versa. - I was happy to see more Dru in this book. She seemed like a side character in the first book even though she was in the family. I wonder if they will explore her more in the last book. -I felt seriously bad for Deigo and his situation. Trying to be a better person but having to be tied to that seriously deranged racist is a rough situation. - I loved the political stance CC took in this series. There are many times I really dislike Shadow Hunters. They always seem to think they are above others. Kit even had a line in this book about Shadow Hunters calling people mundane. I honestly really don't think they get how elitist they are. Even if the "good guys" don't want to be elitist against Downworlders they actually are against humans. I like that they showed the extremist factions within the Shadow Hunters. It shows how much hate can bring down an entire society. That last scene would not have happened if not for the hate that has been growing in the Clave.

Omgggg I'm seriously shipping markcristinakieran so hard 😂❤ I had to ask Cassie about them and as lovely as ever she answer back saying that there was always a chance. I hope it does happen!

I really grew to love Kit's character in this book and I loved his friendship with Ty and Livvy. And yesss I definitely ship Ty and Kit! I'm also really curious about that faerie boy that Dru meets in Faerie. Christine (polandbananasbooks) has the idea that the boy could be Sebastian and the Seelie Queen's child. I also think that it could be possible that the boy is the Unseelie's King first heir that was taken from him but who knows. Hopefully we'll find out in the next book. The ending had me sobbing.

Again...I actually really liked Clary and Jace when they showed up in TDA...even though they annoyed the crap out of me in TMI. I've always loved Magnus, he's like my favorite character ever so whenever he shows up I'm all giddy. 😂

The little boy that Dru sees is definitely the son of Sebastian and the Seelie queen. I think he's why the Seelie queen made the deal to side with the Shadowhunters against the Unseelie king and what Jace and Clary were looking for in Faerie (the weapon that could destroy Shadowhunters).

I haven't watched the vid, because of possible spoilers. Do you need to have read The Mortal Instruments, before starting The Dark Artificers?

It's my birthday and I got this book as a gift so I'm super excited to read it after my exams are over.

I don't think there's nothing "magic" or "more to it" behind Julian's intensity and desperation to protect those he loves. It's just him, the way he is, the way he feels, and the way he reacted towards his traumas and the life he got. You know, it's just...humanity. People are different and reacts in different ways and feels different things differently (a lot of "different" there uh)... So why should have had something more to it? Actually, I think if that'd be the case, then would be a totally turn down for me. I'd be so disappointed. Because, honestly, people can say whatever they want about Julian and feel whatever they want about him, but he is the most complex character that I've ever had the experience to read about in The Shadowhunter Chronicles. It's amazing! The kid is totally fucked up and I freaking love it! I could write an essay on him and all his layers and conflicts, contradictions and humanity and flaws and...god! (yeah, he's my favorite, and don't get me wrong, it's totally ok for me you don't like him, sometimes I wish I didn't like him either, but you know...I just can't... I completely empathize with him, and maybe there's the fact that I can relate to him in a lot of levels too, so...), so I don't like the ideia of having an actual supernatural explanation for the way he is and feels. Yeah, it's a fantasy world but, it's not like we have to find out magic explanation for character's flaws and feelings. People are fucked up, and honestly, I don't know if I would be any better than Julian if I have had his life. For me, he, killing his dad at 12 to protect his siblings was enough to grow this sort of strong protection feeling on him over everyone he loves. It's a trauma big enough to cause this great emotion on him (or anyone for that matter), in my opinion. And having to raise his siblings pretty much by himself (and taking care of the institute and his uncle) in such a young age without any guidance or leading figure, taking all these adults responsabilities while being just a kid is enough material to grow messed up inside. You know, it's not like, for example, Joel from The Last of us had to have a great explanation for the shit he does for Ellie besides his parent X daughter bond (and well, there's the fact that he is already an antihero) that grew between them. Anyway, I think it would be just a waist of opportunity to explore deep human emotion by itself. So, thinking that it might be a "magic" of some sort that is influencing him at being like that, it's not even fair for his character and his story. You know, let it be just humanity. Let him be an antihero just because people do wrongs to achieve good sometimes. Let him be an antihero because people choose poorly sometimes, and that can affect their whole lives forever. Let him be an antihero because inconsequent feelings can be destructive even when they may be good in their core. It's life. It's people. And they are complicated. So let them be.

I think that the stone that Dru found is the family heirloom that Diego was talking about- the one that Zara and co. are after. Their family has a connection to Faerie and the stone is kind of like a prison/safe place for the Lost Faerie Prince.

OMG I don't like Julian either! I get why he is the way he is, but to never let the Blackthorns out of his sight basically is kind of awful. Livvy, Ty, Dru and Tavvy basically have no friends, they're cooped up alone in the Los Angeles Institute all by themselves and I feel like that's kind of wrong. One of his worst fears is that they'll get split up, but won't everyone grow up and move out eventually? Would it be so terrible if they went to school? I know he's worried people won't understand Ty, so I get that side of it, but still. The fact that he considers breaking every parabatai bond (damn when I read that line my jaw literally dropped) is another reason I'm not completely in love with him. I'm also worried about him going forward after that ending because I don't see how he'd ever recover, which is why I think that somehow they might be able to bring Livvy back. Like there was all that mention of the Black Volume dealing with necromancy so I wonder if maybe they'll be some way of getting her back. Maybe I'm in denial, but Livvy didn't destroy me so much because I think she'll come back somehow. I feel like Julian would walk into hell to get her. I'm probably wrong, but I have a kernel of hope because it's too much for Julian and for Ty, they won't be able to get past losing her. I was sobbing pretty much the whole time they were in the London Institute too, it was so painful but so good. I cried at the exact same spots you did. All the references to TID killed me, and there were so many little hints and references to TLH too and I know that series is going to RUIN me so all that was amazing. Lots of people are saying that the boy in Faerie is Sebastian and the Seelie Queen's son, arghhh! I'm also so curious as to who Kit's mother is, I feel like that's an important detail we're missing, and I feel like she'll be a part of the next book. I love Kit, he is such an amazing character and him and Ty are SO CUTE. I feel like Mark/Cristina/Kieran could definitely become a polyamorous and that would just be incredible. I was shipping Mark and Kieran so much but now I ship them all. Alec's character development is SO GOOD, I love him and Magnus so much. Magnus and being Tessa is stressing me out so much, Tessa is my favourite CC character so if anything happens to her, I'll just never stop crying.
