Hobbits aren’t too kind hearted to not be corrupted. They have such modest desires that they are less quickly corrupted. Give unlimited power to a guy who wants to rule the world and a guy who wants to live alone in the woods, they will both abuse that power, but the guy who wants to be left alone will take longer to turn.

I'm with the OP on this. When the ring tempts Sam in the book, it shows him Mordor turned into a vast garden worked by thousands of slaves. And Sam shakes it off quickly, because the ring misread Sam so badly, it's a little funny.

The most difficult thing people struggle with is understanding the absolute onslaught that Frodo is experiencing. In every waking moment, his mind is assailed by the enemy. The Ring is at all times trying to convince the bearer to submit. Speaking to him, showing him images, trying to dominate his will and make him act in the interest of the ring.

There are 3 essentially "races" of hobbits. The kind of hobbit that frodo, sam, merry, and pippin are all value peace and quiet and a comfortable life. What the ring does is corrupt its holder and amplify their deepest desires. The reason why frodo and bilbo dont have that much effect from the ring is because the biggest thing that it amplifies in them is what I mentioned and it takes much longer to have the negative effect. Smeagol is a different kind of hobbit. In the books when sam has the ring it tries to tempt him by showing him a vision of him having the world's best garden and his response is "shut up, I could never take care of a garden that big"
@TallisKeeton
@TallisKeeton 2 года назад
the ring is somewhat inteligent and it amplifies our desires yes, but at first it tried to do with Sam's mind its usual thing - show Sam the vision of him as the hero of the age with great army, as the imperator then next it tried to do it with showing Sam that by having big army and having an empire he could turn all Mordor into the garden. So IMO the Ring was smart and it could learn how to manipulate a person.

"These two! Why do you do things like this?!" One thing to bear in mind with Pippin and Merry...Pippin in particular...is that they're actually much younger than the other two. Hobbits come of age at 33, and Pippin is 29. So he's pretty much the Hobbit equivalent of a 16-year-old. Plus he's a Took, and that family has an adventurous spirit and a curiosity that most other hobbits don't. Furthermore (and this is explored much more in the book than in the movie), he was very frustrated with Gandalf and the others at this point. After they and the Ents overthrew Isengard, they were started to realize that there were things they could actually do to help, rather than just be a nuisance. They had the potential to do good, even though they were small. But when Gandalf arrived with Gimli, Legolas, Aragorn, Theoden, and Eomer, talked briefly, and then went to talk to Treebeard, they felt overlooked and underappreciated, and became frustrated with Gandalf in particular for withholding information. And it was just exacerbated when Pippin recovered the Palantir, and was just told "I'll take that, my lad. Quickly now." With no explanation as to what it was or why he should hand it over or what made it dangerous. Now, of course, Gandalf didn't tell him that because he thought it would just make him more curious, but when he said that to Pippin, he said that if he had known what could happen, he never would have picked it up in the first place. So that was an error on Gandalf's part: another case of hobbits being underestimated. So it was a combination of the natural curiosity of a Took, the rebellion of a frustrated teenager, and magical compulsion.

and that curiosity that led to Gandalf figuring out about the attack on Minas Tirith. -Fool- *Genius* of a Took!!
@angeljaceherondale
@angeljaceherondale 2 года назад
I'd say the movies also don't show at all that touching the Palantír barehanded like that, would make you not stop thinking about it. If I remember well, in the books, Gandalf even apologizes to Pippin, for not having noticed that it was a palantir at first, and what that meant, because at that point he didn' t know how Saruman was communicating with Sauron. He said he had too much on his mind, and he didn't realize the danger Pippin was in when he grabbed it for him. And that it was basically out of Pippin's control, the fact that he would eventually do anything to look into the palantir, because it had been corrupted by Sauron's connection to it.

Smeagol had the ring for 478 years, he was in those caves for a very long time. By the way, Ashkan, you have to remember this is not only a trilogy of books, but a vastly larger expanded universe, compacted into 3 movies. I strongly suggest you read the books if you're really interested in the finer details, I promise you, every single question you had throughout the series is answered...in great detail by Tolkien.

Yeah, Tolkien was both a serious scholar and deliberately attempting to create a folklore for modern Britain in the way that Arthurian legend was folklore for the medieval nation, so he went ham on the details. Any question you have, he's probably answered somewhere, at length.

In the books, Smeagol, as he was known before the ring, was known to be mischevious and used the ring to sneak around and be invisible, gaining secrets and gossip he couldn't have otherwise heard or know about. When he was eventually found out, they cast him out and exiled him which is where he found himself in a cave. He wasn't one of the particularly 'good natured' hobbits.

His ownership of the ring began with murder. The ring seized on that and amplified that negative impulse. That's why it affected him the way it did. Bilbo began his ownership with pity, choosing to spare Smeagol when he could easily have killed him. He then gave the ring away willingly (with coaxing from Gandalf) and was the only person in recorded history to ever have done so.
@michaelccozens
@michaelccozens 2 года назад
@@justingensel157 I'm not saying Smeagol was a saint, but I'm thinking the murder had a lot to do with the Ring, as well. Probably the sneaking about, too, (definitely the "eating babies", or, at least, one hopes). I think it's worth noting that the Ring seemed to have a big and immediate effect on Deagol, as well, or he'd have just given up the Ring to Smeagol. He'd have rightly thought Smeagol a dick, but when it's clear you're getting into a serious physical fight with a close relative over a thing, you have to really want that thing to not just say "this shit isn't worth it". The Ring is basically a metaphor for a fascistic unfettered desire for power, in whatever form. The whole narrative has a lot of parallels to the rise of fascism in Europe in the interwar years (and previous to them), and the struggle to defeat it.

You asked about the people who were lighting the beacons, this was a way to signal across great distances quickly for help. He would’ve more than likely had two soldiers stationed at each beacon. They would’ve been stationed there for about a week with provisions a week later two new soldiers would’ve shown up and relieve them. so on and so on that way you’re able to communicate between the two kingdoms really quickly.

That part of the story is based on fact. England developed a beacon system to warn about invasions and pirate attacks during the viking period and it was still in use right into the 1800s. Th beacons were mostly along the south and south eastern coasts. They were famously used to follow the spanish armada's movements in 1588.
@KimitakeHiroaka
@KimitakeHiroaka 2 года назад
As far as I can tell, it was considered a really honorable responsability to be the one in charge of these beacons back in the day. Only the most trustworthy soldiers could be asigned with this kind of duty, like people with unquestionable honor and allegiance to their country. This system was used by the Umayyad Caliphate during the conquering of the Iberian Peninsula on the late first millenia AD to prevent attacks from the christian kingdoms of the north. Even to this day, there are ruins of these places in Spain, under the name of "Almenaras", which come from the arabian "Al - manara" that means something like "light spot" or something like that, which is self explanatory.

Fun fact that I can’t believe no one’s posted yet. Christopher Lee (Saruman) was black ops during WWII, and when Peter Jackson tried to give him notes on the sound he made when Saruman got stabbed, he said "Have you any idea what kind of noise happens when somebody’s stabbed in the back? Because I do.” Peter Jackson conceded the point, lol As far as the beacons go, I imagine there’s a village within a couple days travel of each beacon, and the villagers take it in shifts to stand watch. I’m sure somebody who’s read LotR more recently than me will have a more concrete answer, but that’s what I always imagined.
@zbynekurbanek3345
@zbynekurbanek3345 3 года назад
Im sure they would have the beacons on the hill above the village and will be just generally standing watch in the village... and when the previous beacon is lit then someone from the village goes up on the mountain and light theirs... thats how it would work in reality. (they do not have to be all burning at the same time... there could be hours between lighting of each one...) because if everyone was standing watch all the time they would get the message over in half an hour... (1 minute for every beacon) ...but even the movie shows the lighting went on over night... (day/night/day)

When Gandalf fought against the Balrog and died, his soul transcended back to the realm he originally existed (which was many many years in his perspective), but he was sent back, more powerful and more like his true "angelic" self, hence why his personality seems to have completely shifted from the more cheerful and witty Gandalf the Gray. Gandalf the White is much more serious and "regal", especially since he is put in the position to be leader of the other wizards by being named the White Wizard. Edit: Also, in the scene where Gandalf is trying to smoke his pipe, and he is coughing, this is them telling the viewer that Gandalf isn't the same person we once knew. He's in a new body with new lungs, and it can't handle his old habit of smoking. You could honestly say Gandalf the Gray is truly dead by the end of Fellowship of the Ring since this version is a "reincarnation" where the same mind went is altered.

There used to be three tribes of Hobbits, the Stoors, the Fallohides, and the Harfoots, who lived in different regions and were somewhat different both physically culturally. Distinct ancestors of the Hobbits we all know. The three groups gradually became one when they settled in the Shire. The Hobbits of the Third Age are descendants of all three tribes, although the Brandybucks and the Tooks are closer to the Stoors, and the rest of the Shire seems closer to the Harfoots. Anyway, Gollum is a descendant of the Stoors who did not settle in the Shire, settling instead in Gladden Fields.

The concept of 2 people out in the middle of nowhere making sure messages can be received/delivered is still alive and well in the modern military. Radio equipment only sends a signal so far. Ask a veteran with commo experience or an infantryman or cav scout about guarding a re-trans station. Usually just a couple guys with a truck in the middle of nowhere with an antenna set up on the roof. Truck battery is all that powers the antenna so you have extra fuel to keep it running nonstop.

There's a similar idea behind HAM radio networks and government support for same, as, in the event of a serious comms disruption, they'd probably be one of the only ways you could get info to most of the population. Cell networks and even landlines would quickly be overwhelmed by the bandwidth demanded of them. I remember hearing a story about a pre-Iraq-invasion wargaming of the possible operation, and the Red Force (REDFOR) commander (playing Iraq) circumvented BLUFOR's reliance on their expected ability to intercept and disrupt REDFOR comms electronically by relying heavily on motorcycle messengers. It didn't go great for BLUFOR, so they scrapped the exercise and pretended it didn't happen. Probably not a great idea, especially in light of what actually occurred during the occupation, but that's what you get when you decide on the conclusion before you carry-out the experiment. Sometimes, the old ways are the best ways.

Peter Jackson handles the beacons of Gondor in classic Jackson fashion: does it make sense? Not really. Does it look cool? Fuck yeah. He's adapting and changing something from the book; in the book, the beacons are already lit as Gandalf and Pippin ride to Minas Tirith. They are up on foothills of the mountains, not literally on their peaks. And people have been assigned to tend them temporarily because in the book it is SUPER obvious that Sauron will attack Minas Tirith first, and they are calling for people throughout the country to report and take up arms. They are already preparing when Gandalf arrives.
@thimbur3543
@thimbur3543 3 года назад
Yes, in the book the beacons are an internal Gondor system to alert the people of Gondor. Rohan is called by a rider carrying a red arrow. A few riders sets out to Rohan and all were killed except one who got through but he was killed on the way back, so Denethor didn't know and thought Rohan had abandoned them.

Lmao the reason fans get all "It's not a dragon!" is because Tolkien himself was VERY picky about what counts as a dragon. To him, they're more than just winged lizard-ish creatures. They need to be intelligent, cunning and, above all, greedy. According to Tolkien, dragons are the mythological personification of avarice. TBH, I think it's a bit too picky as well, but those winged creatures are called "Fell Beasts" in the book specifically because Tolkien was quite specific about them not being dragons. Also, PS: "Nazgul" is the term for the wraith-dudes themselves, not the mounts.

You are so correct. I, myself have had so many discussions/arguments with a friend because of the Witch King's words to Eowyn during that confrontation. Eowyn: I will kill you if you touch him! Witch King: Do not come between the Nazgul and his prey. The Nazgul is clearly speaking of himself in the third person. To paraphrase: Do not get in *_my_* way. However, my friend insisted that the Witch King was referring to his mount because of the visuals. The fell beast looked ready to feast upon Theoden as he lay there not only injured but pinned by his dead horse as well.

•First of all, great Elf costumes. •I thought Budget Lord of the Rings was either The Chronicles of Narnia or Game of Thrones. •Smeagol is actually a Stoor, which is one of the three subspecies of Hobbit. Also, it is not that Hobbits are too kind-hearted to be tempted by the Ring; it's that they're pretty content with their lives in the Shire that there is very little that the Ring can actually offer them. When it tried to tempt Sam, all it could offer him was the worlds most elaborate garden. •In Western cultures, the desire to consume raw meat (as in while the animal is still alive) is a sign of one's fall into darkness and becoming evil. •I think those are some old ruins, but I can't find an exact name. •Good thing y'all are watching the Extended Edition, because Saruman doesn't even appear in the Theatrical Cut. •RIP, Sir Christopher Lee. Fun Story - when filming that scene, Peter Jackson has some ideas for how Saruman should sound after being stabbed from behind, to which Lee tells him that is not how a man sounds when you stab him from behind. Given that Lee served in the RAF as an intelligence officer in WWII, Jackson didn't question him and let the master do his work. •That is a palantir or seeing-stone, a crystal ball, which we saw Saruman use to communicate with Sauron. •Elves are immortal and he has drunk before. The Wood-Elves of Mirkwood has a particular taste for fine wines made by the Men of Laketown. (I recommend you watch The Hobbit trilogy next) •They used size-doubles and other camera tricks. So the actors playing the Hobbits would film the scene and then they'd film it again with size-doubles and the other actors and then combine the two in editing. •In the books and as you'll see, Theoden will go to Gondor regardless of if the armies of Gondor reinforced Helm's Deep or not. It is the Oath of Eorl (Eorl being the First King of Rohan) that established the everlasting friendship between Rohan and Gondor. •It also means Pippin is in grave danger, as now the forces of Mordor will be trying to kill him. •Arwen has chosen to give up her immortality so that she can be with Aragorn. She has this choice because she and Elrond are Half-Elven. •All bladesmiths hate this scene because that is not how one reforges a sword. •They're reforging the sword because it is a symbol; that is the sword of the King of Gondor and it should be the King of Gondor to wield that sword. Men would rally behind the man who wielded that sword; rally behind their King's return. •Minas Tirith is the capital city of Gondor. It is based on Constantinople, as Gondor is based on Byzantium a.k.a. the Eastern Roman Empire. •Indeed. As Gandalf said, Lord Denethor is merely the Steward of Gondor, ruling Gondor as a placeholder until the true king returns. The reign of the Stewards is one of the marks of the decline of Gondor. •"There And Back Again" is the title of Bilbo's memoir about his quest to Erebor in the East with Thorin and Company. (Again, recommend The Hobbit films) •Apparently, as Gandalf the White is in a new body, he has lost Gandalf the Grey's tolerance for pipetted smoke. •Yes, the Witch King of Angmar is the leader of the Nazgul and thus Sauron's second-in-command. •That is Minas Morgul, once a fortress of Gondor, now it is the base from which the forces of Mordor strike Gondor. •First of all, sorry about that. Secondly, the Fell Beast is technically a wyvern, when may appear to be similar to a Dragon, but they're not the same. In British and Irish heraldry, Wyverns have 2 legs, while Dragons have 4 legs. •Orcs are not know for their hygiene. Also, most fantasy is set in medieval times, which was also not known to be the most hygienic time period. •A) Gandalf is not present. B) Their anticipating an attack from a different direction from where the orcs are coming. C) The Orcs are advancing under cover of night and fog. •In the books, the beacons are only a warning that Gondor is under attack. In addition, there is also a red arrow that is sent to call upon Rohan for aid. They are permanently manned by Men of Gondor, who dwell in the Firien Wood.

For context: "Your staff is broken" -When Gandalf got promoted to White, he actually replaced Saruman as the head of his department. The head office got wind of Saruman joining the enemy and they took away his staff/license/power. -Ever since Gandalf got sent back powered up, he's been more god/angel than man. The old Gandalf used to be afraid of his purpose and smoke weed a lot (yes, it's true) - That tiny thing the Nazgul rides is not a dragon. Merely a lesser flying beast. Sick of people thinking Tolkien, a catholic and a highly moral man would put marijuana in his books. Marijuana wasn’t even used in Europe at the time and it was mostly an Asian habit until about 20 years after the books were written. It wasn’t even popular in the US at the time. This may be a bit on the nose, but my theory on the fire signals. When I was in the military, we had this thing called "Fire Guard". I'm sure it was meant earlier in the military to actually be specifically for that (barracks made out of wood and such), but it became more of a security detail at night. Two soldiers are on rotation and each night it's a different pair. The people tending to the signals could probably be stationed there, but switch out. When on that detail, their main objective is look out for the preceding signal to be lit so that they can light theirs. No fire from the preceding signal? Don't light yours. Theirs is lit? Light yours, pass the message on. Then probably haul ass to prepare for battle.

They have like 30 hours of behind the scenes on the extended edition DVDs. They go over how they film everything. For making the hobbits seem small, they use a combination of short doubles and forced perspective shots. It's really cool. For example, in the first movie where Bilbo is sitting across the table from Gandalf, they aren't actually sitting across from each other. Gandalf is sitting closer to the camera than Bilbo and the table is really two connected half tables. This creates the illusion that they are sitting across from each other and Gandalf is much taller than Bilbo. Must be super weird to act like that lol.

Also, the actions of the person when acquiring the ring affects the way the damage develops -- Smeagol opened with murder, as opposed to the way Bilbo acquired it (petty theft / finding it on the ground -- and showing mercy to Gollum). So even when Frodo came into it, there is a certain level of free choice that guides his relationship to the evil force. Smeagol's people are sort-of-like hobbits -- the river-dwellers are on a branch of descent leading from Man to hobbit.

The way those beacons depicted in movie - yes, there's two guys living in hut on top of the mountain, probably working in shifts with other guys (like two weeks on mountain, two weeks back in village, repeat). Realistically, it shouldn't be that extreme though, with beacons on top of mountain tops constantly covered by snow, - no, nothing like that, such simple system perfectly works without going across the mountains, by going around them. In real life England had such things along coasts facing continental Europe, to prevent unnoticed invasion - without any mountains involved, hills at best, or at least some sort of platforms. It was shown in movie with Cate Blanchett (Galadriel in LOTR) - Elizabeth: Golden Age And btw it shouldn't take that much time (it's definitely more than 12 hours, including whole night) to light up all of them, with only dozen beacons or so involved. That's pure cinematography.

*You guys are awesome, love the commitment and energy and the chemistry of you two. Hope you read the longer explanation below my shorter explanation.* *Short version: to why **_Pippin, Bilbo, Smeagol, and Frodo_** react differently to temptation and adventure:* It's not a universal Hobbit quality, different families and Hobbit-kind had different qualities to them. _Tooks_ tended to produce adventurers, _Baggins_ were by far the most content with their life, and the Ring took advantage of a person’s ambition. *Longer more in depth version:* It’s not so much that hobbits of all kinds were resistant, as evident by Smeagol. The _Took_ family was the rare line that produced adventurous and curious hobbits, which is part of why Pippin got in so much trouble and was curious about the orb. It's also why Bilbo went on his adventure in The Hobbit, as Bilbo Baggin’s mother was Belladonna Took. The _Baggins_, however, were the most content of the hobbit families, wanting for nothing but the peaceful life they led. In a lot of ways they were Tolkien's ideal hobbit, and though Bilbo had _Took_ blood in him too, Frodo did not. He was only related to Bilbo via marriage and not direct blood, and instead was more closely related to the _Brandybuck_ family and thus had a blood relation to Merry., Frodo maintained that pure Baggins contentedness with his life, and it is why the Ring had such a hard time influencing Frodo in particular, Smeagol was of an old kind of hobbit called the _Stoor_ who lived along the river Anduin, they most resembled humans, and interacted the most with them as well. These likenesses and frequent interactions might be why they lacked much of that inherent quality of being content in life that the _Baggins_ and even other _Fallohide_ kind of hobbits who inhabit the Shire.

I like how she says, "Is the fighting starting now, I'm not ready for the fighting?" This is very true of how most ladies consume action/adventure movies. They want more story and romance, with a bit less action. Men seem to want the opposite, but also like the character building. I think this is because in the male DNA we know that we are expected to fight first and hardest, so action stories are a way to prepare in some small way, which may help us survive later.

So the Ring had some higher level of influence on them since they weren't completely pure. Smeagol went so fast to "My precious" because he murdered someone to get the Ring, and the more force you use to take it, the stronger the hold it has on your mind and soul.

When Eowyn wakes up in the couch and she tells Aragorn about her dream of the great wave: it's actually a reference to this massive tsunami/flood that killed Aragorns ancestors, the Numenoreans. That's why Aragorn looks at her that way. She's literally seen into his own past, and uncovered the reason of why there are so few of his kind left. I guess the scene has romantic connotations too, but I always read it that Eowyn has a special connection to Aragorn, even an affinity, that goes beyond the romantic. In the end their friendship is based on mutual respect and an understanding of each other. In the same way Eowyn understands where Aragorn comes from, Aragorn encourages her to be herself, and validates her as a shield-maiden. This kind of leads to her fulfilling her own destiny. Eowyn's character was never written to be part of a love triangle, in the script or the book, though a lot of people see it that way unfortunately - and I guess that's because love triangle tropes are waayyy more frequent in movies nowadays. @bluezauza
@bluezauza 2 года назад
Elves don't only have sex for reproduction but they do choose only one mate for life. They don't get married either with a ceremony and such , if they love someone they chose that partner and the act of sex is all that it takes to seal their bond, because it's not an act of lust but an act of pure love. They love so deeply that when a spouse is killed they will grief forever but very often choose to die also, and that is why the elves consider Men's mortality a blessing, because they will live forever with the grief of a dead loved one, and if you consider that Galadriel for example, is around eighth thousand years old at the time of this story that is saying much. In all of the Elf history only one elf married twice, Finwe the High King of the Noldor elves, because his wife gave all her vital energy to their new born son and she was left with none for herself and died and unlike every other elf he did not die with grief but he wished for more children so he took another wife and had two more sons and two daughters. He was Galadriel's grandfather. This story is very tragic for both elves and men and it is the first time elf goes against elf , the Kinslaying, and they never forgot about it and grieve it deeply, it not only caused a massive betrayal and slaughter of elves by elves but also a deep rift between elves that was never forgiven. There is only one real break up also , Aredhel's is the best known ( also one of Finwe's granddaughters) she marries a not so nice elf who somewhat bewitches her and they have a son, but since their marriage was not one of pure love she eventually escapes him with their son, who is not himself a very nice guy and he craves for power( his uncle's throne) and lusts after his cousin, Idril, who is actually married to a man, Tuor, and so he ends up betraying his mother's family to Morgoth, his father kills his mother and all this too ends in a huge tragedy for elves. Curiously Idril is Elrond's grandmother and Arwen's great grandmother. The moral of these stories ends up being precisely that love generates love, lust generates division , jealousy and grief. These are little inputs that Tolkien added to the stories ,his faith and beliefs and also because he loved his wife very, very much. Tolkien’s own Catholic view is that the appropriate place for sex is inside lifelong marriage and for the purposes of procreation. Elves did experience sexual desire and sexual fulfilment but they did so only in the context of a loving union. Tolkien’s elves had a very specific moral purpose in the context of his work. They represented the best of humanity, pure, perfect, uncorrupted by sin. In particular, they represented the best qualities of humanity in the same way that Hobbits and the Shire represent the best of a communion with nature and a simple life, free of greed and industrialization.

Signal fires are a legitimate thing in ancient times. It is worth investing in a guard station and kit them out with supplies. Rotate people out ever couple of months. In exchange, something that could take anywhere from a week to a month can now be messaged within a few hours. It is lightspeed vs horseback riding speed. Keep in mind you also ignore terrain. So no having to go around or climb up and down a mountain.

Another fun fact! The dream that Eowyn awoke to describe to Aragorn near the beginning of the film is actually a recurring nightmare that Tolkien, the author, had throughout his life. Tolkien was half-convinced that every time he dreamed of the great wave consuming the land, he was witnessing the destruction of Atlantis, and it partly inspired his creation of Middle Earth. It's of course much more complex than that, but those are the cliff notes lol

it's so funny that pretty much everyone thinks it's strange that there are always people ready to light the beacons, security guards on shifts has been a thing for a very long time.
@YekouriGaming
@YekouriGaming 2 года назад
Security guards on shifts are who freaked out like crazy in 1939 and 1940 when they could hear a ton of motors rumbling in the distance. The danish movie 9th April (the date of the 1 day German invasion of Denmark in 1940), has a very nice long scene of everyone freaking the hell out because of the security guards reports at like 3 in the morning of high activity near the border, even with radio by that time you still wanted hands on deck.
@higgsbozon4862
@higgsbozon4862 2 года назад
@@YekouriGaming ok, ok interesting but are you then implying that all security guards are bad because of that mistake? I am struggling to see the connection to a few guys changing shifts on a mountain top in middle earth to light a beacon and a false alarm in denmark in 1940.
@YekouriGaming
@YekouriGaming 2 года назад
@@higgsbozon4862 It was not a false alarm, its just a modern example of basically the same thing. Just with radios instead of the beacons.

Just a little tidbit for you, and yes, im already rewatching this. :) The name Gollum and the way he says gollum, comes from when Smeagol killed his cousin Deagol. He made that noise in his throat when Smeagol choked him. He never got over it in his head and kept making that noise, so people started to call him Gollum.

@@justtrustash At that sound the bent shape of Ash sprang suddenly erect. Tall and proud he seemed again; and rising in his stirrups he cried in a loud voice, more clear than any there had ever heard a mortal man achieve before. Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden! Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter! Spears shall be shaken, shields be splintered, A sword day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor! With that he seized a great horn from Guthláf his banner-bearer, and he blew such a blast upon it that it burst asunder. And straightaway all the horns in the host were lifted up in music, and the blowing of the horns of Rohan in that hour was like a storm upon the plain and a thunder in the mountains. Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor! Suddenly, Ash cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Éomer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first éored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Ash could not be over taken. Fey he seemed, or the battle fury of his fathers ran like new fire within his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a God of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young. His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shown like an image of the sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed. For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea; and darkness was removed, and the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hoofs of wrath overtook them. And then all the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City

I love how they portrayed the white Gandalf as more powerful than the gray and yet they did it interestingly not by having him crafting fireballs or thunders toward his enemies but by him powerful enough to withstand the gigantic fire. Its almost like this fire is nothing to him, he does not need to protect himself by some magical shield only wait for the fire to extinguish. We must remember that it can be also connected to the fact that he got the Ring of Fire, with ruby, Narya the Red one of the 3 elven rings of power.
