On the wall of Helm's Deeep, during the battle, a one-eyes warrior turns to the camera, revealing his scarred empty socket. The performer, Wayne Phillips who played him showed up as an extra, wearing an eyepatch. Director Peter Jackson politely asked to see what was under the patch and then inquired if the gentleman would be interested in appearing in the movie sans eyepatch. He was reluctant at first, and quite self-conscious, but afterward said the experience had made him more comfortable with his condition.

Fun fact: the actors playing Aragorn and Arwen loved speaking Elvish so much that they convinced Peter Jackson to change a lot of their dialogue to elvish. Those dream sequences were meant to be in English originally. Also, elvish is a legit language now. Tolkien, the author, literally created a language for his fictional race. So there were actual language specialists on set teaching the actors how to speak proper elvish.
@Parlour100
@Parlour100 2 года назад
Yes, Tolkien was a linguist. He had a fascination for languages since a young child, and then went to University to study linguistics, with an emphasis on the ancient Slavic language. If you'll notice, Elvish does have a slight eastern Slavic sound to it, but with a musical lilt to it. They recently made a movie about his life, and how he came about writing The Hobbit first, then LOTR. He wrote the Hobbit for his children. LOTR, he recognized, has be more mature in theme, because his children had grown by then, and he wanted to appeal to more people since The Hobbit was such a success.

So a word about why Elrond gave that speech to Arwen: The movies don't really do Elrond's character justice. He's half-elven and had a twin brother. Elrond chose to be immortal, and Elros chose to be mortal and went and founded Numenor (where Aragorn comes from). Elrond had to essentially watch his brother die. He lost his parents, his brother, his adoptive parents, and also watched his king/father-figure Gil-Galad literally burn to death in front of his eyes at the Battle of the Last Alliance (when Isildur separates Sauron from the ring). Sauron, just prior to killing Elendil (Isildur's dad), had grabbed Gil-Galad in a choke-hold and combusted him into flames, then tossed him aside like trash. Elrond couldn't do jack about it. Later, he gets married and has three children (we only meet Arwen in the movies). His wife is waylaid by orcs, captured, and tortured. Elrond's sons rescued her and brought her back and Elrond did his best to save her, but he couldn't help her cope with the trauma and she fell into a deep depression and eventually sailed West without him. So Elrond knows a thing or two about grief and what that sort of choice that Arwen is making does to people. I think he's also holding onto Arwen, quite desperately/selfishly, because she's one of the few people he has left. If she chooses to be Mortal, Elrond knows there will come a time when he will never see her again. It also means that Arwen will never get to sail West and see her mother again, either. So really, he's not trying to stop her from making her decision. He's trying to help her make the most informed decision possible. He's speaking from personal experience. He had to make the same decision when he was Arwen's age, and it ultimately cut him off from his brother and many people he cared deeply about. I think the pain and grief he describes to Arwen (about lingering on and dwelling in darkness and doubt) is something he himself has lived through, and still lives through-- and he loves her, and he really doesn't want her to have to live with that kind of pain.

@cpmf2112 3 года назад
Elrond wasn't such a dick in the books though. He was fine with Arwen staying and marrying Aragorn, he just made it clear to Aragorn that Aragorn needed to complete his mission and become King to get Elrond's blessing.
@MC-or3oi
@MC-or3oi 3 года назад
@@guzzlemydust3932 Yh but hes of pure numenorean blood, thats why his lifespan is so long compared to other gondorians. The people of gondor married lesser humans and cut their lifespan shorter because of that. I think Aragorn died aged 250 or something like that, thats loooong for a 3rd age Dunedain. Funny thing is that the first numenorean king literally thousands of years ago is his ancestor and his foster fathers twin brother. Elrond is old as hell.
@angeljaceherondale
@angeljaceherondale 3 года назад
To me, the most important part of all is not that he knows grief. He doesn't want to live immortality without her. Because elves, even if they die, they end up in the Havens, so one way or another, even if it takes a thousand year, you will see your loved ones again, either because you will physically sail there, or your spirit will end up there if you die in battle, or from a broken heart. Now, if Arwen chooses Aragorn, and chooses a mortal life, she will live more than Aragorn still, but eventually she will die a man's death, which means she will "pass beyond all knowledge of the elves" and not end up in the Havens. The elves don't know what happens to the spirits/souls of men once they die, they "move on in their journey, possibly to other worlds" which means he would effectively never see her again. For someone that, as an elf, doesn't think he will have to worry about losing his children to a permanent death, imagine then having your daughter decides she wants to go in that path for love. That's why he asks her in the movie "don't I also have your love?" Because he's begging her not to make him lose her forever. Because once he goes to the Havens, she will never arrive after him, not even when she dies. That's the real crux of it. He will have to face her real death and real loss, because she'll no longer be bound to the Earth, like elves are, when she chooses a mortal life. Just like he never saw his brother again, and had to face that permanent death, he doesn't want to go through it again with his daughter. He doesn't want her mother and her brothers to have to lose her forever either. And he doesn't want her soul to go somewhere where he can't foresee, where he doesn't know if she'll be happy, etc. Those are his fears.

"Why am I relating to Smeagol?" Because the writers are amazing and so is Andy Serkis. Also, you're not a monster. People SHOULD react that way to seeing that kind of violence committed against someone (or something) who hasn't actually done anything to provoke it. And the writers, Peter Jackson, and Andy Serkis all do an amazing job presenting this situation in such a way as to tug at your heartstrings.
@ForeverDegenerate
@ForeverDegenerate 2 года назад
Smeagol is an abuse victim. And for him it was cycles of abuse that he could not escape. From the Ring to the Orcs to the Gondorians and back to the Ring. That's why he's such a relatable character and that's why so many people feel for him by the end of Two Towers. So you're right in that if you feel for this wretched creature, you're not a monster. Funny story about the creation of the Ents: Tolkien loved this line in Shakespeare's Macbeth: “Macbeth shall never vanquished be until Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill shall come against him.” He loved the thought of marching trees. However, Shakespeare had other ideas. He just makes an army cut down tree branches so they look like a marching wood. Tolkien thought this was bullshit and said "Fuck that."

There was actually speculation that Aragon was falling for Eowyn since he let Arwen go. And fun fact: the chanting done by Saurmans army was actually a sound recorded by thousands of rugby fans chanting words off of the jumbo tron & stomping there feet. Another fact too: Elves can die of a broken heart because when they marry, it’s with there literal soul mate. And a really sad fact: when you put it together, Boromir was pushed to madness by the ring because of his desire put there by his father. His fathers words influenced him to think of the ring as a gift. In a way, his father was responsible for what happened to him & Boromir breaking the rings curse was almost like him finally breaking free of his father. But his father sent him to his death. Another fun fact: the elf army stood at attention for Legolas since Legolas is a prince. Son of king thranduil of mirkwood Another funny fact: the shot to the neck by the old man was so good that Aragon thought an elf made that shot😂 Another fun fact for the Narnia fans: CS Lewis and Tolkien were good friends. They once had a debate about how trees would move if they came to life. CS Lewis thought it was silly to have them move like actual people, so as a friendly jab at his friend, Tolkien based Treebeard off of CS Lewis😂

Aragorn almost drowned when he floated down the river. The filmmakers expected him to go one way but instead he when against something and got pulled under. They were about to send help to him but then he surfaced. Also the reason why elrond told his daughter the future was because soon the elves were leaving to go to the undying lands and once they left she wouldn't be able to get there so she stayed she would live forever here and have to witness Aragorn dying and she'll to deal with nothing but sadness. So he told her that so she would be more likely to go.

Tolkien, the writer, was a linguistics genuis who was making up languages for most of his life. He also had a love of history/ mythology and he combined the two when he made a world surrounding the languages he made. That's why the world feels so alive, because he started with the basic building block of any civilization, the language, and built from there. He did this because he felt that the rest of the world had these amazing creation myths but England didn't because they'd gotten lost in the shuffle of time so that's what he made LOTR to be, a creation myth. He even added a whole "mythology" that these books were transcriptions of a mysterious "red book" he found in the fields of England that he translated. As if it was a lost Beowulf book. Tolkien was the real deal.

The shot where Gandalf and Eomer ride down the side with the Rohirrim and you hear Gandalf's scream that sounds like it is an ancient echo of battles past billowing through the centuries as they crash into the orcs with the light shining on them is my favorite scene in any film ever. I am so glad someone got so excited for that particular shot, that shot is absolutely legendary imo. The quotes about hope all take on a new meaning when you realize that as a child under Elrond's care in Rivendell, Aragorn was named Estel meaning 'hope' in Sindarin, to hide from him his true identity as heir to the throne of Gondor out of fear that he would be hunted. You guys are gonna freak out and cry so hard in the third film and the speeches are gonna knock you for six. The next battle is bigger than Helms Deep. Also you guys have to check out The Hobbit trilogy next to see how Bilbo got the ring from Gollum. Very good eye both of you by the way for seeing how resonating the story actually is, it is multi-racial and multifaceted story. These races of different people from different cultures who can't really agree on anything other than Sauron is not in their best interests, they do fight amongst themselves but it is still a better world than the world Sauron wants. Remember One Ring, one land, one people, one world, one Lord Of The Rings. Sauron is willing to commit genocide against any who do not fall in line with him. Gandalf "There is one Lord Of The Ring. Only one who can bend it to his will and he does not share power !". No one can save the world alone only together can people do that. Tolkien btw is the writer and not only did he write a world, he wrote the most detailed fictional world in history. This world has geography, languages, stories, legends within in it's own world, a bible including a creation story, a dark lord even more evil before Sauron, family trees, fallen kingdoms that go back thousands of years. So The Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings are really just the tip of the iceberg, just the massive mountain above the surface of the water and the rest is all bellow the surface right down to the centre of the earth. Some scenes of this were filmed before that was changed, most of which weren't used but there's one shot remaining which once contained Arwen. The scene at Osgiliath, Sam: Mr. Frodo, we shouldn't even be here, this isn't in the book!" Faramir makes the decision to let Frodo and Sam go just after capturing Gollum. He does not take them to Osgilaith. That would have been a march of at least 2 weeks time. I love Maps and Tolkien's books always have a map you can refer to and see where all the characters are at different times and how far away these places are from each other. The ruins of Osgiliath are only mentioned in passing in the book and no scenes actually take place there but a battle is referenced. It was the former capital of Gondor but now in ruins after hundreds of years of fighting against orcs from Mordor.

"These guys are like sloths! Come on! Make your decisions!" So when the Ents have their moot, they speak in a language called Old Entish, where the words are all very long. They never rush, because why should they? They're trees! Even their proper names are long. Treebeard even says, "there are those who call me Treebeard." He doesn't give his proper name, partly because he just met the hobbits and that's a BIG trust thing, and partly because they'd be there all night. Entish names "grow" as the ent does, because an Ent's name is basically his life story. And they almost never want to be hasty. I say "almost" because there's a character who didn’t make it into the movie named Bregalad, which means "Quickbeam." And he's considered hasty by the other ents. Not by the hobbits though. Lol.
