Losing Foot and Ground References: Becoming Darth Vader.

Postural Restoration uses references: these are the GPS coordinates that your brain uses to figure out where you are located in relation to the ground and space. They are a primary foundation of walking and breathing re-training, but they aren't well understood.
We all need psychological references, too. They allow us to understand ourselves and our place in the world. With the correct references, you'll be happy, with the wrong references, you'll be unhappy (and probably in pain).

Really appreciate when you link PRI mechanical principles to philosophy of life. This is may be as much important. Thank for this message.

Neal. I love the anology to Star Wars (lol). The whole journey has been so fascinating. And I am so glad I found you last year. And with your advice I went to see the PRI guy in London. And London was beautiful. And then I continued on that journey learning and educating myself. And somehow you popped up again in my recommendations on You Tube. I know you might never admit but for me you have exceeded the principles of PRI now. This is just my humble, personal opinion. God bless you for your work. It is such pleasure to listen to every single You Tube upload you have done.

Thanks, Thomas. I appreciate your thoughtful comments. It is definitely a journey. We're all humbled by the experience. Reminds me of these lyrics by Guns and Roses in the song "Estranged" An now that you've been broken down Got your head out of the clouds You're back down on the ground And you don't talk so loud An you don't walk so proud Any more, and what for Our physical body humbles us. You change what you can change, accept what you can't change.... then you rise up and transcend it all (hopefully).

I think the best piece of advice you've given (in my opinion at least) is that pri techniques are NOT gym techniques. Relaxing into the proper postures has made them incredibly difficult but I can feel the super weak left side muscles turning on and doing their job. This is great stuff, thanks for all the good information.

I'd check out Joseph Campbell's work. Neal, I think you would love Michael's Singer's books and weekly talks. Read his Surrender Experiment book first to get a taste of his amazing life. A Quick read and very entertaining as well.

It would be less distracting, hence easier to get what you're saying, if you adjust the skeletal foot into normal conformation. The 4th toe is curled unnaturally, requiring me to replay with my eyes closed to focus on your words. And, Jordan Peterson hits a lot of points Joseph Campbell glossed over.

You are the example cause you come from this.. Your videos along with Bill hartmans book is Changing my life. I already had some education on anatomy and had always been doing experiments on myself. If my hip is doing this I need to stregthen this... but its just waking up the nervous system so the nerosystem can turn on the muscles.. .... .. Also I agree on your philosophy here .
@NealHallinan
@NealHallinan 4 года назад
It really is just waking up the nervous system, waking up what is already there. The troubling aspect is that it can be so difficult for many people to inhibit the "Darth Vader" pattern that they always use to stabilize and move them. For me, my visual system wouldn't allow proper sensory recognition of the ground, so Darth Vader got me through the day, enabled me to survive, but I wasn't living in any true sense.

And here I thought you were going to tell us to walk with purpose like Darth Vader with the music playing in our heads so that it is like dancing or marching! lol I have issues standing in the kitchen. I always seem to stand primarily on my left side and the muscles scream as I lose the released musculature. I try to stand on both feet and it doesn't help. When I walk things release most often. If I squat, or sit on the edge of a chair leaning forward, things release naturally. I can't keep running from the kitchen to make it release. How do I KEEP the released psoas/qt/sciatic nerve while standing?

Great video and extremely relatable. Is it possible to be vice versa in a sense? I am fully aware body is mind mind is body, but what about being stuck in extension let’s say to an ankle sprain or past injury. That now you’re in fight or flight, and true “you” can’t be reinstated because of the response. Ie, real you is under there, but the anxiousness takes over from any over stimulation. Thanks!

Hello,Neal. I think we should have some kind of moving exercises. I don't think putting the body in one position will help much. We should learn how to stablise ourselves in movements. Have you heard of the Spiral Stabilization, which is a exercise method invented by a Czech medical doctor? We should have a 3D view of the human movement, not just 2D. What I have learned is that human should have spiral movement in activities. It is the method with the least energy. And it looks like our DNA!

As usual, I love your sharing very much. In the way of healing myself, I learned lots from you.
@NealHallinan
@NealHallinan 4 года назад
Hello. All PRI techniques are three dimensional because all movement is three dimensional. It's just that in the beginning the emphasis is on controlling the pelvis and rib cage, where the movements are smaller. The moment you hip shift, it's three dimensional. In fact, you could define the left AIC pattern as someone who can't move their pelvis in 3-D. There are hundreds of PRI techniques. The more advanced you get, the more movement there is. The techniques I show on my site are just for beginners (2-D patterned people).

I think a serious injury to my right side when I was a kid has completely ruined me. Everything I try to do to get to the left makes me worse and even causes digestion issues. As soon as I try to get to the right I feel better. One thing I've been doing is making my ribs on the right side bend down with my left rib cage going back. I can breath better too. What are your thoughts on what this could be?

The problem is I don't even know if my brain can make sense of it due to congenital mirror movement disorder. How am I supposed to move properly if I naturally have an imbalance with the nervous system because the signal goes to both sides automatically and theres nothing I can do about that. I tried fighting it and it only created more problems

In PRI, is the right tricep tight or weak?
@NealHallinan
@NealHallinan 4 года назад
In the human body, the right tricep is weak due to lack of right shoulder extension due to the right BC pattern.

I have a question. Ive always done split squats where my hip shifts to the right and I didn't realize this until finding your videos. I've also gotten low back pain on my left side because of this. My question is if I continue to do split squats but with my hip pointed towards the left will this help contribute to the repositioning of my hip? So instead of my left leg externally rotating while my hip is pointing right it will be internally rotating while my hip is pointing towards the left.
@NealHallinan
@NealHallinan 4 года назад
I'm actually going to make a video about this. Great thought process. Theoretically, what you describe is desirable in my opinion. The question is whether you can control it enough (whether the left AIC pattern is inhibited completely) to make sure you remain in "left stance' during the entire rep.
@a-a-ron7325
@a-a-ron7325 4 года назад
@@NealHallinan I've been doing it but I definitely have to do it slower in order to be able to concentrate on not shifting my hips into the wrong direction. I feel my left adductor working more when I do this.
