Not gonna lie, flying Coast Guard C-130s or any rescue aircraft is probably one of the most badass jobs out there.

was radioman in a C130 at Barbers point Hawaii in 83 to 85. one time in 83 we went to search for an Air Force Para rescue guy who jumped out of a C141 to Rescue a Mane Pilot who Punched out during a refueling operation,, he caught fire and ejected along with his co pilot,,, he was still tumbling in his efection seat at 34000 feet when he saw his jet explode,,,, he was tumbling wildly in his ejection seat,, no oxygen,, probably drunk from lack of oxygen when he decided to stick his arms out to slow the rate of tumble of his ejection seat,,, the chute opened at 10 thousand feet .. its to prevent pilots who eject higher from getting sucked up into a thundercloud and being turned into a 300 pound hail ball

LtCdr Fothergill ,, ex Kodiak pilot shut down 2 engines to give us an extra half hour on scene to searcn,, for the Air Force pararescueman that jumped to his death to help them,, we could not restart one engine or divert fuel to the good engine so we where going to ditch,, but,, for some miracle the jet stream died and we landed on fumes at Hilo

My brother served aboard the USS San Diego in some hairy situations and was telling us what he could. Our mom and I asked, What if you don’t know what to do?! He laughed and said, “Hope like hell the Coast Guard isn’t too far away!” The people in the Coast Guard are amazing!

Am from Europe and watching what these people do just blows my mind! They literally could be putting their lives at risk everyday and that requires very special people who are willing to do that for others! You people have my ultimate respect, you are rare in today's world. May you all stay safe always.

My Dad was stationed in Kodiak around 1960, as a Gunner’s Mate Third Class, USCG. The stories he told were amazing, and the pride in his service with the CG was immense. My admiration for the dedication and service of America’s safety net is boundless. I’m very happy this show exists to share the stories of this incredibly valued and often-unsung group of American warriors. Thank you for your service.

I found myself full of admiration for the Crew's that launch into the hostile weather and unforgiving environments known in that area, determined to do their very best to help those in need. They literally save lives on a daily basis, and they are proud to be given the opportunity to do so. On a separate note, that little baby was so adorable, and I can only imagine how proud of her parents she will be as she grows and understands their roles.

They ARE the military! They are just not heavily combat oriented like the navy. They also conduct law enforcement activity in American waters. Which is something the navy is not allowed to do.
@dianatodd2300
@dianatodd2300 9 месяцев назад
They most certainly ARE military, and are one of the three maritime military forces of the United States and take place in all the big joint military practice activities.. They have fought in every war the US has been in and even have Medal of Honor recipient. During WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, coastguardsmen, due to their greater experience with small craft and waterways, manned most of the small boats and landing craft, as well as serving on bigger ships. (their own and Navy) Many, many coasties lost their lives in doing so. Because of this, the Coast Guard and the Marine Corps have always had a special relationship. Today, the Coast Guard and Marine Corps have the toughest boot camps of the military. They have even had Marine Drill Sergeants on Special detachment serve in the Coastguard boot camp at times. Why so tough? Remember, Coasties, are not just preparing for what may come, but what they will actually BE doing, lifesaving and law enforcement chief amongst their many responsibilities. Lives, theirs and others,,' depend on their ability to function under the toughest of conditions and stresses and it is mentally, emotionally, and physically demanding. By the way, did you know that the CG even has their own special ops team? Surprise, they do! Not many people know it, and they are a smaller team than their other service bretheren, and are not singled out for special attention in the media, but don't ever underestimate their skills, dedication, or military capabilities. Here are four good CG bootcamp links: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jBtJet6kmZ0.html&pp=ygUVY29hc3QgZ3VhcmQgYm9vdCBjYW1w ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Xkjt2YAFqVo.html&pp=ygUVY29hc3QgZ3VhcmQgYm9vdCBjYW1w ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aYzTT6D5TQw.html&pp=ygUVY29hc3QgZ3VhcmQgYm9vdCBjYW1w ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IcHb5VFPvJo.html&pp=ygUVY29hc3QgZ3VhcmQgYm9vdCBjYW1w I hope this is helpful and interesting

I was on a mission in 1969 dropping maps that had been filmed by side looking radar to the Coast Guard Cutter Northwind. It was developing leads in the ice to assist the tanker Manhattan that had been re enforced to withstand the ice. This was to test the feasibility of tanking oil from the north bank to the east coast. The mission resulted in the need for the pipeline. We flew out of Elizabeth City to Tule Greenland to Innuvick Canada, and an AirForce base. We landed in Point Barrow and spent a night in Resolute Bay 60 miles due east of the magnetic North Pole. We had on board a Canadian navigator to shoot the stars thru the top of the C-130. It was a 40 day deployment resulting in a blown prop being feathered as a run away prop due to low temps at reseolure bay during takeoff and had to stop in Tule and wait for a replacement prop from ECAS. AE3 “Andy” Andrews, Scanner.

I’m in the middle... ‘could I retrain and.....’ but not in Alaska. There are thousands of exceedingly dangerous places where winds half kill you WITHOUT freezing constantly. This is why I moved 600miles south. Places so cold that you can die walking home make life more complicated. And you end up permanently locked in this small town for half the year (because even the train got buried under an avalanche of snow).

Huge difference between the officer/crew interactions now vs 30 years ago. In my day, the enlisted crew in back were treated like inferior scum and the officer pilots never even spoke with them unless necessary....certainly didn't interact like they were normal human beings. The only pilot I ever rode with who was a true team player like these guys was Laura Gauth (previously naval special ops). Apparently things are FAR better today than yesteryear.

That's the on-base pool, everyone on base gets to use it at different times of the day, including coastie families with kids, it's important to recreate when you are not aviating.

You know, they're talking about only 350 people there in Sitka. When I was in the USCG back in the '70s we only had about 50,000 nationwide, and that was both the East and West coasts, the Great Lakes, the Gulf of Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, and all the rivers including the Mississippi. We were spread pretty thin. But the most people I ever served with was a 165 foot cutter where we had about 90 crew. I think the ice breakers are about 400 feet long with about 350 crew. But we did a lot with the people we had. We were always busy.

The crab pot injury is a lot more serious than first thought. When the human brain is rattled that hard within the skull there can be a slow seepage of blood that accumulates to the point of death. Immediate medical help is necessary. I hope he survived his injury. God bless the brave men & women of the Coast Guard!

All politics aside, this is simply my belief that when Americans work together, as in the case of the U.S. Coastguard, we are all in a better place. We are Americans, first and foremost, it's our greatest strength. 🇺🇸

Training is everything! Over and over until it is muscle memory. And retraining every year. As a flight attendant for nearly 20 yrs, I had quite a few medical emergencies. Your training just kicks in and you know what to do. The one and only time we evacuated a plane, the same thing. Muscle memory just kicks in and we had them all off, in 45 seconds. All fine, except for two sprained ankles. Training, testing, and more training. And these guys have such better medical knowledge then we did. Just so impressed! Wow!

That's gotta be the hardest part of a coast guard. Being called out on a search and rescue mission, and unable to find the guy, knowing he probably heard, or even glimpsed the plane in the distance, and you just couldn't find him.

In 15 years in search and rescue I've seen many things, but I've also learned the hard way that you can't save everyone, and that is the hardest part of SAR!!!

Remember this. All of those people that are rescuing you are getting peanuts for what they do. They are here doing a job because they are committed to savings lives. GOD BLESS these people.. When the boat is going down who are you going to call. Coast "buster" Guard. Alright a bad joke.
