A possible historical reference for Bartolomé might be Bartolomé de las Casas (1474 - 1566), a Spanish friar famous for decrying the abuse of indigenous people in spanish colonies. He played a big role in the enactment of the Leyes Nuevas, which officially prohibited the slavery of native peoples and placed them under the spanish crown's protection (though whether they were at all effective is a different debate). While he was still a colonialist actor (big on spreading christianity), you could definitely call him one of the """good""" colonialists of his era.

Ah yes, because missionary work is so very evil and opressive. There have definitely been "missionaries" that were pretty awful, the Baltic/Northern Crusade especially comes to mind, but the idea that actual, legitimate conversion is somehow colonial makes absolutely no sense.

@paolomandala02 Theologically? You're right, there's nothing wrong with missionaries. Anthropologically? So many cultures got destroyed in the name of spreading Christianity, *especially* compared to other faiths.

@@brendaneichler5244 I... don't see how that tracks. At least in the Spanish colonies, missions are, as far as I know, *positively* corelated with the modern presence of pre-colonial cultures (Paraguay being the biggest example). It's not like the Mayans or the Guarani, or back in Europe the Irish or Lithuanians, just gave up their identity just because most/all of them (through varying degrees of coersion) converted. Quite frankly, one of the reasons Christianity spread so far is because, *relatively speaking*, it's historically been pretty flexible with the culture of its adherents.

@@paolomandala02 I am not particularly interested in debating on this particular issue (since it is largely an irrelevant distinction to make in a colonial context), but what I meant in particular by that comment is that he himself conceptualized his missionary work as the peaceful path to a colonized America. By his own admission, as much of an advocate for universal dignity as he was, his argument was not "we should not colonize this land", his argument was "this is the nice way of colonizing this land".

I think it's worth acknowledging that in the story, it is said that the events are happening a year in universe after MoM, so it's understandable that Quint is already familiar. Eldraine was a few months after MoM, so it should be safe to assume that he had stopped by other planes. Additionally, as the story closed, it seems that Kellan can sense Omenpaths, since he knew where to go to find an Omenpath.

I more assumed that Kellan's journey in WOE just took him several months, so by the time he took the Omenpath out it was about a year after.

Im betting that going forward 'Planeswalkers' are going to be the 'Can sense/find omenpaths easily' Like they know folks like Legendary Creatures as a mechanic better than planeswalkers. Like I bet at one point Kellan was considered to be a planeswalker

Quint probably has the coziest time as a Freshly Sparked Walker. Not only does he come from a plane that knows about the multiverse, but he started travelling after everyone has been exposed to the concept of interdimensional travel _and_ there are now Omenpaths knocking around so people aren't as inherently suspicious of him as a stranger. Unrelated, I'm glad that Saheeli and Huatli are back together but I was hoping for a tortured "lost lovers" arc where they are desperately searching the multiverse for one another

I enjoy these story-focused episodes and hope you keep doing them. That said, I was a little frustrated there was no mention of "The Coin Empire" as Quint's reason for being on Ixalan was researching a connection to it, and it's pretty clearly going to play a fairly central role in the Magic story over this 3-year cycle, most likely as the big bad.

When the time comes where you guys break out the Lost Caverns precons, I hope it includes the Explorers of Ixalan game board. No one else seems to remember it exists, and you guys did game with it once before to great hilarity. A neat gimmick!

Timeline wise, in-story it talks about how it's been a year since the Phyrexian Invasion, and it's generally assumed by the Vorthos folks that WOE was 6-months post-invasion, meaning that Quint has been a Walker for a year.

On the topic of psychic gorgon that's actually half my theory for what'll be up with Jace and Vraska is that Vraska will be largely 'fine' but Jace will be effectively just a presence living in her head so we'll have a technically psychic Vraska for a bit.

I imagine Breeches' weapon as something that's essentially an unwieldy hand-held cannon for launching a large explosive/incinerating projectile. He probably only had one shot because of how big the projectile is.

@@gamerbear84 I'd say bombs tend to explode in-place. That thing launched an exploding projectile, using some other smaller explosion, as cannons and guns do. As I already mentioned, the single-use part may just be due to the relative unwieldyness. Malcom seems to have had expectations for how it works, so maybe they test-fired it at some point in the past.

So, I'm still sort of on the outs with the magic story so this is my main exposure to the set's story. I gotta say first off, this podcast got me way more excited for the set and setting than anything else out there, and secondly Lost Caverns of Ixalan sounds like a lot of seting up for the eventual Ixalan 3: Double Civil War edition, which I didn't think I wanted but all this exposition makes me really excited for it.

Kathleen might have mixed Vito up with Mavren Fein. Vito was not in og Ixalan, but M21, and to my recollection has not been described as a devout follower of saint Elenda, something Fein very much is.

I enjoyed the LCI story for the most part, but it got very rushed at Chapter 5. The first 4 giving us world building, and a slow build to lead everyone to the door was good, but once they got into the door everything just piled on and happened at once and then Chapter 6 was just like "And everyone went home. The end"

Not at all, really. It's not magical in any way, so it's about as similar to the pact as any other treaty ever. And it's a secret, which the pact isn't, everyone knows about it, and the pact isn't some physical object, it's the actual event of agreement that binds its magic, so there's nothing trapped about it and never was.

Going to keep this short but with all the plates spinning on ixalan and eldraine it appears story wise that there is a good argument to go back to a block structure or some form of recurring planes faster so that the story does not need to be so dense with many lose ends

This is standard yes. We won't be getting a standard Ixalan set for at least two years or so. They have revealed a lot about 2024-2026, including a space opera set and returns to Tarkir and Lorwyn.

For all the care put into representing central and southern American cultures in this it, calling it "latinx" really feels like a misstep. While I appreciate the effort to be inclusive, english-speaking white people prescribing language upon us is, at least as far as the people I know are concerned, more damaging to our culture than helpful to gender equality. Spanish is a gendered language, and unless we can rewrite the entire language wholesale, there is no way to reasonably change that. Trying to do so by changing exactly one adjective to use a suffix otherwise not used in the language is frankly gross.

The story in general for the most recent sets just doesn't have good pacing, imo. Too much stuff happening in that short amount of time 🫤 Several times during the story, I had issues with how time skips and stuff happening never really got to breathe.
