full heartedly agreed! Hank Sr was amazing, I might of been born in 87, but my favorites are Hank Sr, Hank Jr, Hank III, Waylon Jennings, George straight, Randy travis
Yep heavy metal musician here and love Hank both Sr and Jr. Hank Williams is the original Bad Boy. He married a pretty woman. And he died in the back of a Cadillac. Anything to get away from Audry, right. And he so Loved her and he was her meal ticket. Bocephus has to love Audry. Hank Sr did too but...in the back of a car traveling to another gig? Now everyone praises histalent even the opry in Nashville and The Country Music HLl of "shame". I hope Hank is smiling down on all the musicals he inspired. So dark this song is. Hank was haunted and lived the songs. Be it someone else wrote the lyrics or he did himself. But you feel it. Every word or every note
My grandfather stood in line for 6 hours to see Hank live , then the next day he shipped out to europe and served proudly . My gramps always played Hank records when i was a kid ,and even at such a young age I do there was something special andsad in that voice ! When Gramps died I received his record collection , every time i play hank records i think of him
One of the reasons that he was so good was that he actually felt the pain that he sang about .He had a difficult childhood since there is a real possibility that his mother was a prostitute . His adult life wasn`t too great either as he had spina bifida and some addiction problems . He also seemed to have a very troubled marriage with his wife Audrey . ( There are other country stars who had terrible childhoods as well . Hank Snow`s childhood was like a horror movie . His father was abusive . His mother did get a divorce , but when she remarried , it was to another guy who was abusive . George Jones` father was an abusive drunk and George became a violent drunk himself , until he straightened out as an older guy . Merle Haggard went off the rails after his father died . He ended up being married 5 times in his life .)
11 years ago I sat down in a music class at college at 18yrs. Hated country with every bone in my being. Until my professor got to the 40-50’s and introduced us to REAL country. Hank Williams you made me feel like I wasn’t alone in my darkest days and I wish I could pay that debt back. Your music still comforts my soul and lately I’ve needed it. Thank you, King! RIP 💚
God bless young man. I can't believe the never me owner "liberal owner of course" is trying to tear down Hank house. I don't know if u have listened to any Townes Van Zant, John Prine Kris Kristofferson, or even some of the newer guys like Arlo McKinley, White Buffalo, Benjamin Todd, Tyler Childers I could go on and on but I highly recommend any of the above.
Anyone who dislikes country simply hasn’t listened to real country or enough of it in the right setting. Nothing like visiting my buddies farm on a beautiful summers evening with the cooler filled with cold beer, some country playing on the radio drinking till you pass out in the rocking chairs
I use to hear that crackling and wished ot would go away! Now it has and I:m old and grey!! I like the silence with only music in the background rather than snap, crackle pop!
Domenic Simondi my Daddy was Leon Payne. The story of this song is heart wrenching. After Daddy graduated from blind school in Austin, Texas, he began hitchhiking across America. While in California, he got word that his Mom was dieing. He could not hitch a ride back home. The Red Cross got him a bus ticket and while waiting for the bus, he wrote LOST HIGHWAY! This was in 1938, he was 21, nearly 22.
Im 23 and my stepdad is 80, he grew up in the labor camps as a migrant worker and is a old nam vet. We were siitting on the porch one night and he asked me to play this song. ill never forget that night, thank you dad.
I’m 18 been rolling down that lost highway for two years. Took me a while to realize that i came so close to loosing my family for choices I was making. My grandpa sat me down and played this song. My grandpa is the strongest man i know and to see him cry for me made me change my ways. Thank you tommy D one hell of a man.
im a grandpa now. i waisted my 20s doing stupid shit. time i wish i could have back. i lost and hurt a few very good women . listen to your grandpa ! he knows what hes talking about . you will pay most of your dues when your old. so dont run up your bill now when your young or all your memories will be regrets. family is all that matters . if you dont believe that then your too selfish to advise.
@@Flo-Joe I used to listen to this when I was on heroin, I stumbled on it one day and I just related to it so well. Then, I looked into how he died and I understood why. He went out the same way a lot of my friends did and the way I could have.
My dad played a little guitar and lived in Montgomery. Sometime in his 70s he decided to go to Hank's grave on his birthday to play a little and pay his respects. When he got to the graveside, there were already three or four other guys there with their guitars and the same idea. So they all sat around playing Hank songs to Hank on Hank's birthday. And they did it for several years. Dad passed two years ago. I always regret that I didn't go with him to one of his annual "jam sessions" in the cemetery. It would have been pretty cool.
My dad passed almost 3 years ago. He was a musician who played guitar and sang. He is the reason I'm old school, love the county, and everything about a simple life. Don't beat yourself up over petty regrets!
They have some interesting hank stuff in Montgomery. I went to the museum about 20 years ago and they had that Cadillac there at that time. It was sort of chilling and borderline "not right" feeling to be honest
I guess, but, mostly just old. Loved good music all my life. My dad used to say, "Mary's going to sing on the radio." I didn't, and not sorry, but do love music,
It's been almost 70 years since he passed away and there's been alot of greats but none have come even remotely close to the genius of Hank Williams Sr.
I'm sorry to hear that. My Pops is 79 years old and back in the day, he had half ownership of a radio station in Hazlehurst Mississippi, and wud pick and sing live on it. He also had the privilege to play with Ernest Tubb and some others. I got to meet him when I was prob around 9 or 10. Anyway, my point is, I wonder if our Dads might have met or known each other? Pops knew alot of folks. Wudnt that be cool. God bless
Sorry, but this song was written by a blind, singer, song writer by the name of Leon Payne. He wrote it in 1948 while hitch hiking, and waiting for a ride.
Colby Angove ``@ B` N@zereth&@Hu I doubt I'll get one back...Hi... Today is "I LOVE YOU DAY" send to 20 people you LOVE including me!!!. (Just hold down and it will say forward)
This is the real thing - classic American country music at its best. It does not get any better. I could listen to Hank all day and all night, I never get tired of him. Makes me sick to think what the damned corporations have done to American popular music - turned it into a lot of phoney, slick, mindless junk. But once upon a time, we had a genius like Hank Williams, Sr.. Can we do it again?
I believe we can sir! What I love is most of these people love and admire these original inspirational artist like Mr. Hank Williams! Aubrey Peeples does a lot of blues and did this song. Yet she plays an awesome dramatic girl on tvs Nashville! She's one of the few artists that are still really deserving and have the right to record. The songs I want on my radio!
Kathleen Doran sure like to think so but this generation seems lost to me we need to pray to God to heal our country and slow down this movement of perversion and filthfy way of living
My favorite has always been "There'll Be No Teardrops Tonight" - Why oh why did you desert me ? Are you doing this for spite ? If you only meant to hurt me. Then there'll be no teardrops tonight. I'm a singer, Hank taught me the love of singing when I was young.
Ive always got a couple....i never play all the cards and ive held for awhile on nothing.....juniors never to soon on his nitro......although its believed im fast and furious....roflmao
@@christophersawyer253 Thank you! 🤗 She's definitely has the Gift to play! We have musicians on both sides of her family. My Daddy could play anything he picked up and started playing around with the dobro before he passed . ☺️
You should be proud of her. She is special! Hank speaks to the soul I liked him when I was her age and I understood that it was more than music! Tell her to keep up the good work and listen to some 50s and 60s rock and roll Elvis. Much love
LYRICS I'm a rollin' stone, all alone and lost For a life of sin, I have paid the cost When I pass by, all the people say There goes another boy on the lost highway Just a deck of cards, and a jug of wine And a woman's lies makes a life like mine For, the day we met, I went astray I started rolling down that lost highway I was just a lad, nearly 22 Neither good nor bad, just a kid like you And now I'm lost, too late to pray Lord, I lord I paid the cost, on the lost highway Now boys don't start to ramblin' round On this road of sin, are you sorrow-bound? Take my advice or you'll curse the day You started rollin' down that lost highway
25 and been on this highway since 15,partying turned into alcoholism and drug abuse and here now trying to make it another Christmas just for my family.Sobriety is a gift, don't take it for granted.
@beernliqour I was exactly the same as you. On the fast lane highway of drugs and alcohol from 16-25. I finally hit rock bottom and cried out to Jesus and he completely turned my life around. Been clean and sober for 17 years now and God has never turned his back on me even when I turned mine on him he was always there to welcome me back once again and cleanse me of my sinful ways. I’ll pray for you friend that you’ll find the same redemption and pieces that I found in Jesus.
I’m only four and I’ve been on that lost highway for several years now. But my granddaddy sat me down and said girl you got to change your ways, he played me this
Even as a kid growing primarily listening to rock in the 60s and 70s-I clearly realized then and now 50 years later that Hank Williams is really without equal in Country Music. His writing to Country Music was comparable what Dylan's was to folk rock. I remember the movie starring George Hamilton as a kid and how the scene ending with his death saddened me beyond words--it still does to this day.
@@JamesSmith-rc8vf Actually I prefer classic rock, pyschedelia, 60s pop, garage, the great blues artists, 70s soul, 80s and some 90s--also a little punk. I am foremost a huge 5 decade Stones fan. However, great country of the past I think appeals to anyone who loves any of these genre. Hank Williams contribution to music of all types is monumental.
I remember when I was a teenager I thought country music was a goofy twangy joke. I'm turning 60 this year and I've finally realised how powerful Hank's music is - and that's not even in a historical context! There are so many lines that literally give me goose bumps! No deep metaphors, no flowery adjectives just emotional pow pow pow! It's a rare gift to be able to write so simply but so powerfully - sorry Hank, I truly feel remorse for my adolescent disregard!
David Cochrane Hi, I’m 14 and I’m glad that I understand the lyrics now so I can learn from them, hopefully they will impact my life positively in the future as it tells you that even why you feel alone, there are always others beside you. Thank you sir
I agree im 41 and grew up on metal and rock and roll, i think you have to have some age and lived a not so upitty life to real feel the music .......country upuntil 1995 was great 1995 to present unrealatable to me......
David ''You hit it right on the head'' I use to hate country and Hank Williams when I was young also, Now I love Hank Williams ' He made some true masterpieces'
I'm a rollin' stone all alone and lost For a life of sin I have paid the cost When I pass by all the people say Just another guy on the lost highway Just a deck of cards and a jug of wine And a woman's lies makes a life like mine O the day we met, I went astray I started rolling down that lost highway I was just a lad, nearly twenty two Neither good nor bad, just a kid like you And now I'm lost, too late to pray Lord I take a cost, o the lost highway Now boy's don't start to ramblin' round On this road of sin are you sorrow bound Take my advice or you'll curse the day You started rollin' down that lost highway
Hank Williams is the purest Country of all, hands down, and the first big star as the "Country" genre was established in the late 1940's in Billboard charts. Jimmie Rodgers was probably the first true "Country" musician, although "Country" did not yet exist as a musical genre when he recorded in the late 1920's into the 1930's. I don't think there is any serious doubt that Hank Williams is the all-time top pure Country artist. Now the greatest American group of all time, in my view is the Original Carter Family, because they influenced everybody, including Hank WIlliams, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. The original Carter Family recordings are wonderful to listen to, and I can honestly say I've never heard anyone do the Carter songs as well as the original Carter Family. I feel the same about Hank Williams' songs, no one has ever topped Hank's original recordings. Although in the case of both Hank and the Carter Family, I always appreciate a modern singer bringing those old songs back into the modern spotlight, because those old songs have such great depth, style and sheer beauty, exactly what is missing from most of today's modern music, if you can even call it "music".
I love Johnny Horton and Marty robbins. But at that time I did love some Hank WIlliams. And thats pretty nice that your a fiddle player never talked to one before.
imo good music is a direct reflection of life. This was a time when ppl still were poor and struggled but not anywhere near like they're parents did. It was the beginning of a golden age and the music reflects that.
You're spot on! "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn" (Charlie Parker). I suppose, without a longing (to overcome the struggle & strive) that comes from deep within, and which is as strong as the will to live itself, there'll be no soul. No soul, no urge, no art.
Absolutely right. Between Hank, Johnny, Waylon, Willie, George, Merle, Bob and Lefty, there just wasn't any way to raise the bar any higher. Today's singers can't even begin to image a bar that high.
Charly Wobershalek and that is exactly why country today is nothing like it was back then, they lived through the hardships back then. Today's "country" artist are glorified way to much
I'm a rollin' stone, all alone and lost For a life of sin, I have paid the cost When I pass by, all the people say Just another guy on the lost highway Just a deck of cards, and a jug of wine And a woman's lies makes a life like mine Oh, the day we met, I went astray I started rolling down that lost highway I was just a lad, nearly 22 Neither good nor bad, just a kid like you And now I'm lost, too late to pray Lord, I take a cost, oh the lost highway Now boys don't start to ramblin' round On this road of sin, are you sorrow-bound? I come here occasionally to revive my soul. I loved Hank Williams. My cousin and I were in our early teens when the news came over the radio that he had died. We cried like babies. My eyes still mist when I listen to him. I am old now, and I think that when the end comes I will ask that this song be played. I have loved and followed many genres of music, but no one, no one, can excel Hank at his best. Some of you may know me from other sites, and there are many that I adore. But Hank was the King of Kings.
I'm 27 and i relate to his words.. Its amazing how a song written 70 years ago can relate to the life of a young whippersnapper like myself living in a different age. I guess thats how you know you've found good art...
I'm 16 years old and I love older country music it puts a smile on my face if only I could have seen my grandpa sing with old Hank Williams I would have loved it
It’s crazy how you can listen to songs and like them, and not think much else of them, until one day you listen to it and you feel yourself relating to it. It’s like you’ve heard it for the first time, and now my eyes have been leaking for over an hour. Thank you Hank…
This wasn‘t recommended to you. You searched up some good ol‘ Mr. Hank Williams for yourself. Goodnight my little sad cowboy, tomorrow is a new day :‘)
I’m quite literally you’re little sad cowboy lol I’m 5’2 and a bull rider that’s been on the road with the SPRCA rodeo for two years now, not an actual cowboy just a rodeo cowboy but Mr.Hank says the words the best
The greatest singer songwriter that ever lived he was so poetic he wrote how he felt in his heart and soul shame he only made it to the age of 29 but left a life time of music cast one hell of a shadow over country music so much so that he still talked about today movies made of his short untimely life thank you hank
My late Uncle J., who played guitar, mandolin and harmonica loved to sing HWS's songs......and I grew up loving those songs and did not realize that my Uncle's voice sounded so much like ole Hanks.....HW was a good man with a lot of common sense....who carried a double burden of drug addiction and alcoholism and is still revered for his character of loving God and his fellow man. RIP Mr. Williams, Sr.
God knows we need hank williams sr back the real country music. This man poured his heart out real life not a story like today's so called country music. A dam disgrace 😒
once in dallas in about 1985 I went under an overpass and on the bridge someone had written in perfect artistic script: "LOST HIGHWAY." I instantly knew it was a reference to this song, a song by a guy who died in 1953--thirty two years earlier--that's how beloved this guy is in the South.
Hank was before his time in my opinion. He had a bigger hand than people think in the invention of Rock n Roll. He was a superstar and would be today if he came along now
Hank was perfect for his time, if he was before his time you would have never heard of him. His music is timeless witch is why it still resonates today.
Anyone who doesn't like Hank Music is just totally ignorant of the fact he was and still is truly an American icon in the truest sense of the word!!! RIP Hank Ronald Campbell Foley, Alabama
When I was a young man in the 90's, I had a really bad lifestyle I can't recommend to anyone, that involved an awful lot of drinking. ...There was no Uber yet and zero taxi service where I lived. So when I was drove home EVERY night, in whatever condition the night had left me in, I'd listen to Hank over and over. Now that I'm older and thankfully past such idiocy, I still go back and listen ...I know every word. To me Senior's the patron saint of drunks and fools who got me through a bad time in life that could have left me in prison and me or someone else dead. Thank you Hank.
Ohhhh, this makes me feel so much. Im only 23 but i know real music when i hear it. I lost my dad and his dad played this song for me in the hospital and i lost him too this year. Much love to you, Hank
As a younger cat who was born long after Hank died, it's amazing how nearly every song he ever recorded is my go-to on a regular basis. If anything, it's a testament to how timeless his songs are.
