Lost Horizon (1973) Opening Theme

Have you ever dreamed of a place
Far away from it all
Where the air you breathe is soft and clean
And children play in fields of green
And the sound of guns
Doesn't pound in your ears (anymore)
Have you ever dreamed of a place
Far away from it all
Where the winter winds will never blow
And living things have room to grow
And the sound of guns
Doesn't pound in your ears anymore.
Many miles from yesterday before you reach tomorrow
where the time is always just today
there's a lost horizon waiting to be found.
There's a lost horizon
where the sound of guns
doesn't pound in your ears
anymore.

The first time I saw this film was in 1977 at the cinema. It marked me deeply. Firstly, for the cast and the soundtrack. This song is an anthem for peace in the world. Where somewhere in the Himalayas, peace, serenity, kindness lives!

I have loved this song ever since I saw it in 1973. film. It has stayed with me all these years, The lyrics evoke a world we can only imagine, Where The Sound Of Guns Doesn't Pound In Your Ears Anymore. If Only. But that world will never exist.

I really can't get why "Lost Horizon" isn't so famous. Olivia Hussey and Michael York are on the cast. There are gorgeous songs. And James Hilton created a story that few can create. This movie helps me cope with everything that happens in my life.

I sang this theme song to one of my best female friends in college; the only time I ever sang to a girl. She was probably my soulmate, but I was too young, too foolish and too immature to recognize it at the time. We went our separate ways, got married and had kids. A while back, through our alumni newsletter, we got in touch again and corresponded for many years. During that time, she developed a variety of cancerous growths and spent her last few years in declining health. I was continually amazed by her lovely spirit, even right to the end. When I think of her, I invariably think of this song and what our lives might have been like....she was truly the one I let slip through my fingers. I will never forget you Ards.....

This movie I saw as a young child and has stuck with me all these years. Despite being a box office failure at the time, I still consider it one of my all time fave movie musicals with brilliant songs that represented the story and are still relevant today. I don't think there are many on this planet right now that wouldn't give their right arm and leg to escape to Shangri-la. RIP Burt, you gave us all such wonderful memories. ❤

I like most of the music (hello..Burt Bacharach) but the actors were downright annoying at times. That's probably the director's call. Plus, the version we own isn't the original release..It's been shortened and done pretty haphazardly.. like one of the "Made for TV" movies of the day -- like Poseidon Adventure. The song "If I could Go Back" is missing, and a lot of other character development ended up on the cutting room floor.

I was taken to see this as a child by my beautiful mum at a 180 degree cinema called the Geaumont in Birmingham, U.K! The songs like, your refection reflects and when you look at yourself. Still sound in my ears just like the sound of guns spoken of! Now my Mum has gone to Shangrila as I lost her to ALS in January and if spirit world is as beautiful, I can't wait to join her far away from this beautiful place that mankind has destroyed through greed! The message in the film reaches far beyond the script even after 50 years!
@TheCarsche

So sorry for the loss of your mom. I am sure that she has now found Shangrila. I am still as thrilled with this musical/movie as I was back in 1973 when it first came out. In fact, this past week some TV network showed both this one and the original 1937 black and white movie. I didn't get to watch them in their entirety but the music brought back so many happy memories. May this music bring you only happy memories of your mum and your lives together.
@brucethehealer
@brucethehealer 7 лет назад
TheCarsche I can but thank you for your very kinds words. Mum has been back through and she is doing fine in her new life. It seems she misses me as much as I miss her but we must wait patiently for that reunion we know is inevitable and then we need never part again! There are many times I use quotes from the movie in daily life. Remember, even though you answer maybe wrong my question will be right? When you look at yourself, do you like what you see? And that saying, "don't be in a hurry to find death...

Just love this opening song for Lost Horizon----Have you ever dreamed of a place Far away from it all Where the air you breathe is soft and clean And children play in fields of green And the sound of guns Doesn't pound in your ears (anymore) Have you ever dreamed of a place Far away from it all Where the winter winds will never blow And living things have room to grow And the sound of guns Doesn't pound in your ears anymore. Many miles from yesterday before you reach tomorrow where the time is always just today there's a lost horizon waiting to be found. A personal variation on Lost Horizon---done from the perspective of a Hurricane Harvey survivor: I have dreamed of a place Far away from it all Where the air that I breathe is soft and clean And children play in fields of green And the sound of thunder Doesn't pound in my ears (anymore) I have dreamed of a place Far away from it all Where the stormy winds will never blow And living things have room to grow And the sound of thunder Doesn't pound in my ears (anymore). Many miles from yesterday, before I reach tomorrow where the time is always just today there's a lost horizon waiting to be found. There's a lost horizon where the sound of thunder doesn't pound in my ears anymore. I'm not trolling, I promise. I've re-written this song to reflect how I feel. I got flooded, man!

Songs will be always beautiful against time....for me after "Share the joy" something went somewhat wrong...everything looks like TV production for kiddy...By the way, I feel embarrassed when that easterner guy To Yen of Shangri-la once meets west by graduation from famous University...and all people can speak English fluently..children asked many questions on America...actor Kennedy was awkward....etc. Overall, an original novel should have been got some better adaptation for musical.

@bradleyscarton3931
@bradleyscarton3931 2 года назад
It flopped for many reasons. 1.) Musicals were going out of fashion. In a time when you had The Godfather, French Connection, The Sting bringing in a new era in Hollywood, this was old-fashioned and dated. 2.) It's not a great story for a musical. It doesn't hit the right notes that makes a musical successful. 3.) Bacharach & David were an incredible songwriting team for pop and had the successful Broadway hit Promises, Promises, but this score doesn't gel with the story. When I think of the fantasy Shangri-Las set in the Himalayas, Bacharach & David are the first thing that pop in my head. And frankly, it's not their best and some of the songs are bad. 4.) The script was weak and so was the casting. Talk about an odd mix of people to be in a musical. 5.) Overall production was bad. Choreography, costumes, sets, etc.
