“We never know when we’ll cross paths with someone that will leave a mark on us, and we never know for how long those paths will coincide, but when feeling isolated or depressed, that real genuine connection is what saves us.” WOW
I'm barely 20, quite depressed and about to move to a big city by myself and this video for me feels extremely cathartic. I don't know what it is but it feels so relaxing for some reason?
I know im asking the wrong place but does anybody know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account..? I was stupid forgot my account password. I love any tricks you can give me!
I love how this lil indie film that took 27 days to shoot, had a teeny budget, and a relatively unknown female lead at the time still has people analyzing and dissecting it to this day. It's amazing. 💛
Great analysis. My favourite movie ever. One detail you didn't mention also is they both complain about not being able to sleep, yet the first night they are together and as you said nothing happens apart from deep talking they finally both fall asleep one beside the other
Great movie. The dialogue, the visuals, the soundtrack. There are some classic scenes in this movie. Bill and Scarlet are fantastic. They do feel a connection but their commitments to others and their age difference keeps it at a kinship level. Although Bill does kiss her in the elevator , it’s a friendly kiss. He could try to take advantage of the situation, but he won’t. He values the friendship. That scene where she has the pink wig, and puts her head on his shoulder, his response is to fold his hands in his lap and sigh, says everything.
Lost in translation is my favourite movie of all time. it's a beautiful introspection into the human nature. for me, this movie smells like the air of the night, cool and mysterious, but somewhat calming
Her is an amazing film. I found the relationship between K & his hologram girlfriend in Bladerunner 2049 to be similar to the relationship in Her. ScarJo's voice is mesmerising in that film.
Watched this when it came out in cinemas, just as me & girlfriend had taken a "break", watched it again for 1st time since then, with that girlfriend whom is now my wife, on the day you released this video.
This is one of my favorite movies where I didn't understand when I watched it young, but completely understood it with some life experiences down the road. I miss the time I spent in Japan
I will always be greatful to Sofia Coppola for making this movie. I could relate so much to it,that it was a turning point in my life, and also became a part of it. It is very special to me. Great commentary! Thanks,
Beautiful explanation. I like to think they did not become a couple, but somehow kept in touch over the years as it is obvious they cared about each other.
Watch the movie Once. Its very similar in tone and story. Also a fantastic soundtrack. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I6xIF92OUos.html
A Bill Murray fan Adore Scarlett Johansson Introduction into Sofia Coppola I can’t thank those three people enough for what they have done for me. They’ve given me a visual of myself, my life. Sofia Coppola, Amazing Masterpiece! Her decision making for this film was spot on every step of the way. Daniel, There are some good videos for this story but yours captures the true essence of what it’s like to be a person like me. Mr. Daniel Netzel; You Nailed It! Can’t thank you enough for doing justice to this film. You are truly a Blessing to those of us who suffer from Depression Michael Age 61
I am not sure it's depression, at least not how I experienced it. Loneliness, certainly. I think we forget that one can feel alone in a relationship as well, and these two characters certainly are in theirs. If it were depression, I don't think they would be able to connect to each other. You chose great scenes and I love your interpretation of them! Connection is what we seek in those moments of rawness, fragility, insomnia - and indeed what saves us.
God I love this movie. I remember seeing it for the 1st years ago. I was probably 16 or 17 years old. The perfect age of isolation and existential confusion. Everything about the film struck a chord with me. First it was the talent. Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson are incredible on their own, but in these roles, they were so perfectly complementary it's beyond words. Then came the atmosphere. Everything is dreamy and at times out of focus. Both sobering and somber, and unnervingly beautiful. There is something in the air that the audience knows and is trying to ignore or forget, but it's so hard because we get so caught up in the characters' emotions and well-being. I remember thinking, "If one of them dies or something, I'm gunna lose my shit!" HAHA! That feeling of dread is there almost the whole time, because our subconscious knows how it will end for them, but we don't want to see it. I could rant on and on about the feelings this film brought up in me (more so than almost any other film out there)... but if you're here and reading this, I'm sure you already know. And whoever you are... I hope you find what you're looking for.
Dear Stranger, Your video made me feel connected. I’ve found myself returning to this movie over the years and your poignant remarks hit me in the neurochemistry. Thank you. At least for today, I don’t feel as lost.
I always come back to this movie. It leaves me feeling gutted, not necessarily in a bad way, but in a way I can't really put into words. This movie moves me.
I remember watching the trailer to this in my early high school years and thinking oh nice, it looks funny cause of Bill Murray. I watched it and loved it but wasn't quite sure why. Years later, many relationships, both platonic and serious, many travels, many jobs and people, I finally understand why I love this movie so much. For all these suffering from lonliness and depression, may we all find some comfort for our aching souls and our heavy hearts. Get some sleep, feed your body, and start little by little.
at the beginning i thought, well, a good film to fall asleep, not loud, doesnt happen to much..... and i watched it every single time to the end. This movie touches me in a so deep and effective way emotional like no other. Its so beautiful, so soft, so funny and so sad all at the same time
When I watched this movie it took a little place in my heart. It affected me in some way. I think about it often and I have to watch it every now and again
This movie made me feel so many emotions, relating to so many aspects of each character, it hurt to see myself in them in a way but it was also a relief, I really loved the way you reviewed this
Wonderful! For many different reasons, I keep returning to this video. I must have watched it over two dozen times in the past month. Thank you very much for taking the time to produce and share this video.
i love this movie. one of my favorite photographers did a small photo series on the hotel where the movie was filmed too. Alec Soth's Lost in Translation. and great review bruv
Interesting analysis. This film has definitely grown on me. I used to dislike it but now every time I watch it, it feels so initimate and pure. I really love it.
You are the reason why RU-vid is clearly the future. Thank you for this fantastic essay, it brilliantly shows why this movie is so meaningful for so many of us.
Lost in translation is one of my favourite movies. So much so that I went to Japan almost purely because of the film. I pretty much went to all of the locations in the movie. The irony of it all was that my own trip to Japan left me stressed, isolated and really down. I couldn't enjoy myself. I felt so disconnected. Just like the movie. I ended up cutting my trip short because I wanted to go back home!
I don't know what it is about this video essay. I always seem to come back to it and just casually listen to it on loop. Thanks for making an amazing video. It sounds weird but I appreciate you for this.
Probably my favorite video on this movie. As someone who goes through depression myself, thank you for illustrating why this film is important. One thing I do kinda wish is going further into the down point they have in the restaurant scene. But minor thing.
thank you for this video. I'm in love with the movie and these characters. By the way, this movie has the most powerful and awesome bedroom scenes I've ever seen and, actually felt.
Wow man...this was a beautiful analysis and marvellously put together...How did you do it...Eveything you said is how I felt when watching this film...It literally hit the nail on its head...Loneliness and that exact feeling how sometimes language is inadequate in translating our inner thoughts...Not sure if you are a fan, but would love to see you do one of BLUE VALENTINE...Seeing from your other reviews I am sure you will like that too...
Awesome video! It's good that this movie gets attention, it's very overlooked. It's my favorite movie of all time so I'm glad you're making video's about it :)
Hello Film Radar, great job of your analysis on Lost in Translation. it's my number one and personal favorite movie of all time I think you've covered the important themes, symbolism, and character arcs that Sophia Coppola was trying to convey in her film. great job again and keep up great content bye.
Excellent analysis! There's another component of this film that should be explored - the effect of work on relationships. Let's not forget that the two main characters are in Tokyo because either their work or their spouse's work requires them to be there. When you see the two protagonists express the loneliness they feel due to the cultural displacement of being so far from home, their relatives don't understand what they're talking about. To their relatives, their trip is just a glamorous adventure; to the protagonists, it exacerbates the sense of emotional distance they feel from their families. Other films (like "Up in the Air") make a point of showing this too but not nearly as effectively as Sophia Coppola's "Lost in Translation."
Yep, sad, especially now, when it seems most people are either too busy or too scared to even attempt to find actual connection . That, or they just don't even know what they're missing .. how good it could feel .
Thanks you so much for your work. You translate incredibly well thoughs and emotions with a clear and poetic approach without ignoring the complexity of processes. It's a remarquable balance of intelectual and emotional skills.Keep going you're rare. Plus, the world needs more of thoses kind of insights.
Thanks a lot for making this video. This is a film I watch several times each year since the first time I saw it. It's a film that recreates and gives me the same feeling I had in different trips I've made in my life and with people I have met before in those trips. Definitely captures that connection with another person when you just feel right being with them, even if it's not romantic.
The movie at first felt plain. But it became powerful just feeling the two grow closer together, I definitely have felt that auto pilot look bill murray had in the film. Great movie
Another great piece to add to your ever-growing library, i rewatched the nice guys recently and i would love to see a video on it. I think the movie is a really important time stamp on the film industry, such an original piece in the production line that industry is becoming.
Soulmates i just cant Believe how easy it is and simple i cant ever deny how much youve made such an impact on me i miss you damnt and it sucks ass im tired of pretending i dont miss you Sam
I have watched this movie on an almost yearly basis since it came out and still it speaks to me. Since then I spent a year in Japan, which was memorable and magical in a lots of ways but in no way relatable to this movie after all. I am still not quite sure why this movie has quite the effect it does. I think Film Radar comes pretty close , though. Maybe it's about idolizing people you meet on these kind of journeys. You don't have time to get to know their every mundane and potentially boring side and you start imagining this is who they they are. In a way this movie is the essence of melancholy. It's about always grasping for something that you should know you can never quite reach.
I think it's about two people that somehow have the same vibe because their personal life issues and feeling alienated by the place they were. As a result they found in each other a way out of their life at that point. It shows us how much we need to connect especially when we feel disconnected with everybody and everything around us. I guess that most of us have had those feelings at some point in our lives and that's the reason that we can relate at deeper level with the main characters of this superb movie.
Excellent crafted review! I thought I knew this movie yet your interpretation showed me, that's not at all the case ... and I'm going to view it again. Please, what is the music that can be heard in the background in the first 40 secs? Thanks!
They connect with each other partly because they aren't married to each other and don't have to face real life issues. If they got together, it wouldn't be as much fun anymore.
