Sorry for your loss. That sucks. I replaced by T5 supplements a few weeks back with two AI Blades and they are very powerful. I was concerned with bleaching, but I lucked out. I have noticed a huge improvement in coloring of my SPS and I had to up my dosage of two part since adding them.

You took that a lot better than I would. Kudos to you. Slow and steady wins the race with sps. Slow changes over long periods.

From a chemical stand point I doubt that the carbon binded the trace elements. The carbon might adsorb some cations but in the end the bound cations will still be in an equilibrium with their free form, so they will be useable. What I would suppose happened is that after increasing the lights the corals got really stressed and the demand of these trace elements increased drastically, since they are used for light protection, thus lowering their free concentration.

I had a very similar experience. Very oddly only my sps seemed to be STN. All my lps looked good. Lost a few sps colonies. Did so many water changes. Ppl also thought it may be bacterial. Found out my salinity was high. Most likely for some months and it just took a toll. Fixed the salinity and everything seems to be looking a lot better. I'm sure you'll come back better than ever. Call all the friends!

I love your videos bro. started watching two months ago and I have been hooked. I went back. I think 3 years work the videos and so far. I'm here I might get alcotta. When you're videos. And then i'ma go further back and see where you came from when you first started. I am 31 years old this year. I have my first kid at 18 me. My girl had three kids Mary early on and we've just been working in just trying to raise our kids. When through hard times Then finally, we were able to open our own business. Around when what's 28 years old. And yeah, me and my girl. We haven't been on a vacation. In over 13 years at first when we had kids. We were so broke and now that we have a business and make a lot of money but no time. So hopefully one of these days me and my family will get to travel like you and your family. It looks so much fun Great videos keep up the good content. I learn a lot from your videos. But yeah I hope you and your family are doing great

I learned this lesson the hard way too. Now I don't make any significant changes before leaving for vacation. The trip looked awesome though!

Every time I try to actively "improve" a tank it eventually leads to bad things. My best tank ever is my 25G AIO I have running in my dining room. I forget I have it sometimes until my APEX tells me I forgot to top off or replace a dosing/testing element. I literally throw corals away out of it because everything grows like a weed. And that is with a $100 amazon black box and the cheapest salt I can buy.

Sorry to see ur acros dying hope your tank bounces back to it full glory soon. I have a 75 gallon SPS dominated mixed reef and have been battling red cyano and green cyano for the past 6 months, did water changes added good bacteria installed UV but it did not eradicate the problem as every time it only worked for a few days and the cyano kept coming back within 2 days . The entire sandbed, aquarium glass, rocks scapes and even the corals were covered in cyano and in order to make sure it doesn't kill corals everyday I manually removed the cyanos from the corals with a soft brush. Once again last Saturday I manual removed all the visible cyanos followed by a 3 day blackout and 24 hours UV, from the 3rd day I started dosing Amoxicillin 500mg 2 pills on the first day then 1 pill each day for the next 2 days to complete the 3 days treatment cycle, so far it looks promising the tank is super clean with not a speck of cyano whatsoever. The corals, fishes and inverts have not shown any sign of stress everything is looking absolutely normal and healthy....keeping my fingers crossed.

Condolences on your loss. I’ve followed what I believe is the same article on R2R for cipro treatment in a tank. Had great successes from what I can tell. I liked that it was backed by bacterial analysis. When you are ready to add some sps again I may have a frag or two I’d be willing to send you way! Just shoot me a message.

This is the biggest fear I have when it comes to keeping SPS corals. I've tried a few "easy" SPS and I've had no luck at all. Soon I'll be setting up my largest SW tank to date, 90 gallons +40 gallons sump. I really want to try sps corals again but this terrifies me. Im so sorry for your loss I hope your reef recuperates well.

I feel your pain, when my baby was born she had a slight medical issue so I couldn't address my tank for months. Eventually my tank got up to 90 Nitrates and my monti bleached out before I could fix it, the monti digi lost all of its tissue but I could tell there was a few polyps surviving after a few weeks to months. Sure, I lost a few of my LPS but I had mostly lost only montipora (digi and plate). Now that my tank is stable, I can see about 5% of the lost coral (sps polyps) is still alive (with no flesh between polyps yet) AND it has different colors than before. It went from basic green montipora digi to a pink / red looking polyp.

Sorry to hear man.. just happened to me also but mine were monti/ stylo/posilipora so not as bad money wise but I feel your pain! Mine was water quality/ heater broke and metal in water . You’ll be back man!

Been there man.. I have always had tanks, from the time I was a kid. They caused animosity among my family, but I always had tanks. But my apex and final nail in the coffin was my last system. Lost everything in a move! Majority of fish also.. Literally crushed me emotionally. I fought to try again for the next 5 years, nothing. We moved to a new home, and I made the decision to walk away. I miss it every note and then, but the frustrations from the crash and losing everything was too much.. I hope you don't lose all like I did, but in your last video, when you mentioned their losing tissue around the base, it looked exactly how mine did. I hope it direct turn out like mine. Sorry about your lost.. I am going through the same thing. My AI where on for 12hr at 110% and I was not home and my t5 kick in for 4 hr and it cook all my acropora . I had to cut down my light and dosing. Now I am fighting a Dino, and red allergies. Doing a water change every week.. got my water level back to Normal and did a par reader and adjusted light. Man I know what you are going true.. just a small tip have a extra eye on the dino and green hair. Is coming.. wishing you luck

So this exact same thing happened to me - I switched from Radion XR30 to Metal Halides and the switch shocked my SPS. In doing so, the corals reduced alkalinity intake and while my calcium reactor was set at a certain melting point , I had a HUGE spike in dkh. 5/20 frags RTN/STN . I would put my money on the light change. I do want to add that this is why SPS is so difficult but rewarding. I can say though You sure did process this loss of coral okay for the years of growth you lost for some basic Aqua Illumination lights.

For the dead SPS, any harm in letting them dry in the sun, giving them a ROD+vinegar wash, drying again, then grinding them up and putting them in a calc reactor/as new sand on the substrate to re-add the calcium and trace? (I've already done this... just wondering how bad of an idea it was)

Light shock is probably exponentially bad in a loaded mixed reef. The corals go into shock and stop uptaking as much alk, cal, so you get a nice swing there. Then your po4 is pretty high. I nice swing in po4 will kill sps.

Hey brother, sorry to see that. I unfortunately saw it going that way for you. You at least had a beautiful trip with your family to a place. I’ll probably never get to go to. You made it back safely and as someone who has a tank that is full of grown out Sps, the good part about this is you get to start over and put brand new corals in there and start over so not a total loss. It’s kind of boring when the tanks are grown out and you don’t have anything to do except check your water once a week and feed the fish in a way I am very jealous. I wish I was closer to Maryland in North Carolina because I would be honored to give you a Frag of one of my Coral’s to grow back out in your tank. At least it was not a total loss dude. The prima donna corals died but the strong survived and you CAN rebuild. Still sure it was the lighting? Not some random containment? Either way brother we’re all here for ya keep pumping up a Videos will make sure we support you.

So the only thing that help me was (fuana marin rtn stn x )it's pricey but cheaper then a colonie. now I keep a bottle on hand at all times it stops rtn instantly almost. Sorry for your loss

Did you meassure the Par as it is now? Must be very high if it killed the SPS.

I think with the new lighting, carbon reactor & that temp swing all contributed to it? We all face something along the line… I’m having issues with my sps ever since I had the heater stop working & the temperature dipped a few degrees months ago… Course it could be anything 😩

can you make a video about how you travel while maintaining a tank? What happens if the skimmer starts to overflow? feeding? nori? etc.

I had a nano crash few weeks ago that was bacterial bloom lost a lot of nice corals so feel ur pain and that was right before a vacation 😅

It's a fun hobby but I regret doing it. Too addictive, expensive, and stressful.

If had your level of acro go south on me, I would have been so upset, so sorry for your loss of the coral animals, I guess it’s always a learning experience in this hobby.

Wait, you are not going to mention the phosphates @ 0.36? That is wayyyy too high and it explains why the softies are OK, but some LPS are on the border and starting to STN. I doubt you have any issues with bacteria or anything. The light shock could have been a catalyst to push the SPS over the edge and into RTN, but again, your underlying issue is almost definitely PO4. You need to run GFO and get that down to between 0.05 and 0.1. The WC will help, but it will be tough to get it down with WC alone.

Daily dosing of elements doesn’t mean they will stay in range. If you don’t dose enough, they will still deplete. Especially manganese and iron. Your Rubidium was also off the charts high. After asking Randy Holmes-Farley about rubidium, I found it pointless to dose. It does nothing. I ran the RM method for almost 2 years but quit about 4-5 months ago. Back to water changes every 7-10 days, added Tropic Marin A and K to my 2 part, and my tank is so much better than before. Not doubting RM, it worked well while I ran it, but there are so many “I don’t knows” and “we’re not sure’s” that it’s just one big, expensive experiment all the time. With that said, I’ve found anacropora to be extremely sensitive and will just die for absolutely no reason. A little light shock may have set it off and boom it’s gone

You know back in the day when t5s were all the rage it wasnt uncommon to run 300wts for 10 to 12hrs a day without ramping up or down it was expected and gave good coral growth and colour.

I had a similar experience, Bruh. Went to Japan for 3 weeks. My big bro was telling tell to switch off all electrical appliances including my tank to avoid fire outbreak :/ all my other family members agree to his idea...So, I attached a small canister filter to my display tank and left the main return pump off. when I came back, my uni (sea urchin), ring cowrie and bubble tip anemone died. luckily everything else (fish, snails, softies and hard corals were alive.) Did an immediate water change. Never again will I leave my tank unattended for that long ever again! Goodbye oversea vacations T__T

It was the yellow Fiji leather, I will almost guarantee 💯, leather have some nasty toxins when not happy, I think it was your culprit, same thing happen to me long time ago

Dude - sorry man. For over 10 years of traveling for work every trip was a massive systems test. Luckily I have not had any major wipe outs each time. Especially the longest I've been gone was 4 weeks.

Don’t use antibiotics. The Fauna Marin STN X worked for my half year battle with necrosis, and was 100% reef safe. Edit: Nevermind I hadn’t finished the video yet 😂

Those 0.316 Phosphates crashed your tank. Better said, even if those SPS prior were managing to hang on with such high numbers, an additional stressor like a change in lighting is enough to send it over the edge, and once it does, it goes into a downward spiral. No use looking at Trace elements, if main elements like strontium are so out of whack and nutrients are just too high. Sorry for your loss.

You are right to be concerned about antibiotics. I'm a veterinarian and I see antibiotic resistant bacteria at least once a month in non-healing wounds. It's becoming a big issue. I would recommend fixing the inciting issue and doing antibiotic dips vs dosing it to the whole tank. You're going to have antibiotic resistance in that tank and I wouldn't want my kids to be around that should they get a cut or something and get tank water in the wound. Also antibiotics use is becoming more restricted over time. Pretty soon hobbyists may not be able to access antibiotics without a prescription and will likely need to think of other ways to handle STN/RTN.
