Don't do this...
It's been a while since I did any metal casting. I chose correctly with the printer, the Elegoo Mars 4 Ultra, and the resin, Bluecast X One, but my techniques were rusty and I made a lot of mistakes. Here I cover these in the hope that your castings will be more successful.

Thank you for this very frank exposé of the pitfalls that claimed you on the way to creating this cool pendant. I have often thought that what you really needed was to gold plate your helmet, but couldn't find the right words, at the right time, to tell you, so I'm glad you've arrived at the same conclusion.

At least you got a refresher of most of the ways things could go wrong on the first go, so you didn't have to split the difference over both castings.

😂😂😂 I'm sorry for having a laugh at your expense mate! I can only imagine the amount of sailor speak that went on behind the scenes! I bet the family's ears are still red! But. It's a great video of how even the most experienced people can have their "off days". Plus you demonstrated one of the cool parts of casting. If something goes wrong, you can always chuck it back in the furnace and try again. Cost of investment, time, blood pressure etc notwithstanding. 😁 The final cast piece looks really good. I agree with the other comments, that we (read you 😆) are too critical of our own work. I'm hoping to have everything unpacked and set up from the move in the next couple of weeks. This video couldn't have come at a better time. A reminder to give appropriate praise to the casting gods, before I attempt my first return to casting. 😄 Great video as usual Geoff.

Well, as others said in the comments, the most picky criticism usually comes from ourselves to ourselves. If you consider that 1) people will hardly notice all of your minor mistakes and 2) this pendant is a bit dented by design, then I’m pretty sure you can turn all of your “wrongs” into “improvables” (as you actually proved in the second casting) BTW, as usual you shared with us so much valuable information and useful tips that any mistake you see in this work sounds irrelevant to me (and surely to many others out there) 😉 As always, greetings from Rome 🇮🇹

It depends what I'm casting. As I was casting such a small item, it's much more cost effective to use a small dental flask. It uses are 1/3 of the plaster that my smallest perforated flask uses. 😁

Great vid vogman! Super useful for us rookie casters. Definitely interested to learn about how to prevent the pitting. That’s something I’ve been struggling with. Would also love a video on how to calculate ring sizing taking all various stages of expansion and contraction into account! I seem to be losing about one ring size in the process but it’s not exact. Any tips?
@vogman
@vogman 4 месяца назад
I guess it depends on the resin you use. Typically that's where we really see the shrinkage. Some shrink a good 10%. If we know this in advance, it's easy to oversize at the printing stage 😁
@DirtyPlumbus
@DirtyPlumbus 4 месяца назад
We all have days where we're off and everything goes wrong. On the bright side you're not working the pieces by hand. When you've been on a piece for days and have a day like this sometimes you just have to call it quits. I've had a few rings that like this that just got melted back into an ingot.

thank you. Even Bluecast support never told me to start with the cylinder button down and rotate it... to be honest I've tried every so called castable resin and it's never 100% like wax.
@Jewelrymaker
@Jewelrymaker 4 месяца назад
The "pitting" you are getting is caused by investment breakdown. There could be 2 causes of this. Improper curing or improper burnout. I have strayed from the traditional burnout cycle most people use because it doesn't work well for me. The traditional cycle was based on wax, not for resin. I soak at 300F for 2 hours, then jump straight up to 1350F as fast as my oven will go and hold for 2 hours. Then I come back down to 900F for casting. As for curing, the sun works great! Leave your model in a glass container with half glycerin and half water for a few hour in the sun. Give it a try. You might be pleasantly surprised.😀

Its very nice. I do have a question tho. Why do you think you get the porosity inside the bail? I keep having that issue when casting sterling silver.

Thank you again for this new video 👍. One question however : after dewaxing, why turn the mold over with the opening facing up while the plaster is cooking? Isn't there a risk that dust will get inside the mold and therefore cause defects on the casting part ?
@vogman
@vogman 4 месяца назад
As I understand it, there's still the possibility of trapped gases. By flipping the flask, these escape. Plus the flask is now in a ideal position for the pour 😁

Hi. For me the Mars 4 Ultra is the best available right now ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ehG9sHZ29uc.html This pendant was printed using that printer and it's a perfect print... incredible detail and no lines.
