the fact is she win vs the witch not because she is a women or a shield maiden but because she understand merry because she was like him everyone look at him not capable to fight and will flee . without merry eowyn die because in the movie it was not show but merry have a barrow down sword a old sword capable to put wraith of the unseen world in the seen world so become vulnerable to hit . eowyn is not the best warrior , not the best rider . but she beleave every person can change things.

Well, she wasn't a main character, but she got a lot of focus, killed one of the main enemies of the trilogy and married Faramir, so she's not VERY underestimated.

​@@shockwavesteve Eh, it's a bit more complicated and thematically rich than that. They both killed the Witch King. Eowyn's courage was the reason Merry was on the battlefield, and (in the books) her defiant opposition of the Witch-King gave Merry courage to stab him in order to save her. Then, yes, she got the final blow. Merry would never have even dared to approach the Witch-King if Eowyn didn't laugh in its face and Eowyn wouldn't have been able to strike the killing blow if Merry hadn't struck him with the blade. It's less apparent in the movies that Eowyn's courage gave Merry courage (an ongoing theme in the book - Eowyn found courage out of love for Theoden, to save him, and Merry found courage for love of Eowyn, to save her). The Witch-King was equally killed by the woman and the halfling.

I really like that outlook and agree ❤ in my own gnostic way I always liked to imagine that the Earth itself, Nature, is the almighty force. That and I really love the Zen Spirituality teachings, that all humans have equally as much evil as they have good within them, becoming a Holy person (Buddha) to them is reconciling both moralities and becoming a wholesome person. Lmao reading over this sounds silly, but idk I just really cherish open minded people 🤣 and LotR is just so packed full of so many different cultures and religious & spiritual allegories, absolutely love it ❤❤

@@davidalexander7414 Yes. She already achieved glory and fame. What she gave up was her depression and self-destructiveness. Notice though that the depression and the suicidal behaviour didn't leave her when she achieved the greatness in war she had fantasized about - they left her when her self-esteem found a more healthy, less toxic foundation: being loved, admired and respected as a person, as herself. Previously, in her depression she saw her life going to waste, and herself as unappreciated, unseen and unheard. Her native Rohanian culture saw violence and violentic death as the true measurement of greatness. So she naturally wanted to follow that pattern to gain meaning in life and respect from other people. But that's not meant by the author to be a good idea. Tolkien didn't like war or warrior cultures that glorify it. In TTT Faramir notes that Gondor is regressing as a nation because it is becoming more like Rohan in that it now esteems men of war over men of wisdom. Éowyn thinking - due to her surroundings - that she can only become a worthwhile person by killing stuff and perhaps dying herself is supposed to be a bad thing, and her being liberated from this toxic worldview is positive character development. Éowyn's old surroundings where she grew up in left her deprived, emotionally stunted and with only bad coping mechanisms. Encountering Faramir she is for the first time really seen and admired - not as a possession, not as a helper, not as daddy's little girl, but as an equal. And she realizes this is what she really wants. Not death. So life wins in the end.

@@AnnaMarianne Why didnt eomer come to same realization. That warrior culture bad, he should stop fighting and become a nurse or something. Eowyns end is not happy one in the storytelling sense. In the end she resigns into the societal role she was pidgeonholed her whole life. Tolkien probably meant it to be positive, but in the tale he told about her its not.
