@Andrew X A lot of fans are actually saying this, I wasn't creating this out of thin air, thank you. I've had conversations about how "Frodo is weak and whiny" with other people. He was suffering because he was carrying literal evil, I think anyone would be a bit influenced by that without being weak in the first place. Also what the fuck are you even talking about? What do you know about anyone being strong or weak or "making excuses"? I "got my shit together" several years ago if you were referring my mental health issues. I wasn't looking for your great wisdom about getting better, so you can kindly fuck off.

Frodo carried a heavy burden of the ring even older people lost their minds when they saw the ring for the first time but frodo kept it for the very end and he kept on fighting for everyone and the wound on his chest and the ring were making it even harder for him he still did it in between he did started losing to the ring but he never fully gave up his heart was still with him the burden couldn't be carried by big people but considering his age and the fact he was a child a teen he carried that weight and kept on fighting against himself everyday every moment for me and it's the truth frodo was and will always be one of the strongest character in lord of the rings everyone thinks he is weak without even realising what he had to go through and the heavy burden of the ring was with him he is one of the strongest and bravest character in my opinion the sacrifices he made and everything he truly is the most underrated and most deep character that needs understanding hope you get my point

The books are far older, and Jackson gave us what might possibly be the best film adaptation of written works in the modern age in this trilogy. The casting, the writing, the location, the lighting, the effects crews all put their hearts into this project, and now we and our children can enjoy it for all time.

It’s literally been so long, I can’t find anyone who cares about it anymore. I HAVE THOUSANDS OF POSTERS IM STILL STUCK IN THE FANDOM BACK ATLEAST 8YEARS AGO 😭

The sad part is when frodo wakes up in rivendell after he destroys the ring and sees Sam, and you can see in his eyes that he immediately loses his happiness that he had when he saw marry and pippen, and feels guilty. he has this never ending self doubt and guilt for putting on the ring at mount doom even when he ended up destroying the ring. I feel that pain a lot, that guilt for my past mistakes that seemingly never goes away.

@@andrewhodyss9092 that’s a good point actually. I always saw it as that when Frodo sees sam he’s reminded of everything. As in Sam is the only one who really knows what Frodo went through and that’s why they share that smile, they don’t need to say anything, they understand each other completely

I would say the life long pain and burden he carried never gave him holistic peace. But I wouldn’t say his life was tragic. I think many who got to end their life surrounded by friends in the Undying lands would be at least somewhat joyful

Life is tragic. In many ways his story mirrors the human experience of loneliness, struggle, pain, sorrow, fear. But he was brave. He kept trying. He had hope. Ultimately he triumphed. And his joy was all the greater for having come through what he did. It resonates with me.

I've come to appreciate Frodo with time, as I've grown up as a person myself. I guess many people just can't relate to his inner struggle, as it's not as obvious as the physical fighting, or value his nobility of mind, as it's not as "awesome" as some other heroic character traits. But isn't that just Frodo's fate, the burden and doom he agrees to bear? To suffer himself loss, so that others could gain? To go unthanked as he silently fades away from life, the prosperous life others are enjoying because of what he did? His fate is the same in and out of story. Remember when Frodo had a moment of weakness in the Morgul vale? When he realized the war has started, and feared that he was too late? That even if he destroyed the Ring, everyone he knew would be dead by then? He revealed something very important at that moment. He revealed, what was his temptation - what it was that the Ring was tormenting him with. (Otherwise he never lets it slip.) Frodo after all desired to be a famous hero. He wanted the great people to know him and praise him. He too had in such ambition, such weakness that the Ring could torture him, get a hold of his mind. His struggle was to convince himself he needs to do his task no matter what, no matter what happens to him himself, if he gains anything out of it, or even if he just loses everything and dies. I recall Tolkien wrote in some of his letters about this - that Frodo's weakness was his unspoken desire to be a hero. It's sad and beautiful how his story went. He seems to have felt in the end that he failed, that he was corrupted after all. He had no peace of mind. And he still longed for the Ring after its destruction and even felt everything dark and lost without it. But it's not only a depressing tale. He grew so much as a person. He became wiser, with great insight and inner nobility. I recall Tolkien wrote his favourite theme wasn't tragedy, but transfiguration. Frodo became, in a sense, sanctified, ennobled. Letting go of desire or indeed need for wordly fame is part of it all. It's beautiful. And writing this I finally realize it's official, after being a passionate Tolkien fan for 18 years, Frodo has finally become my favorite character. In the very beginning it was Pippin - appropriate for a young person to identify with the kid surrogate character - and Boromir because I was edgy, and Legolas because he was pretty. Then later on in adult life, Gandalf and Elrond, for being mature. And now Frodo, for being spiritual.

I'm very new to being a Tolkien fan, and quite young as well - and yes, Pippin is also one of my absolute favorites, just because his parts are the most fun to read. And well, I kind of have a thing for Eowyn. Because she's pretty, and pretty cool :) I'm gonna pay attention to what you said on my next reading (god I'm looking forward to that) because some of the stuff you said I've never thought about. The way many people dismiss Frodo and what he did reminds me of the way the rest of the Hobbits back at home treat our heroes when they return: Merry and Pippin are cool fighters with swords and are therefore admired, even Sam gets more recognition than he himself thinks he does, just Frodo doesn't. Because the people ultimately don't understand or care to understand what he did. And if I remember correctly, this bothers Sam, who obviously thinks Frodo is a great hero and doesn't like that others can't see it. And when people on the Internet say "Sam is the real hero, Frodo was so useless" I always think about how much Sam would disagree with that. I have to admit, the way you talked about Frodo's fate and unspoken desire to be a hero after all... I got pretty emotional just reading that. It's such a powerful story. When I first read Return of the king (so like... Five months ago), I hadn't watched the movies or heard stuff from friends. All I knew was that it was obviously going to end well, and that they would be rescued by giant eagles. I was certain he was going to destroy the Ring and live happily ever after. And when Frodo failed, that really hit me. Such an extraordinary moment to read... Because of course he couldn't do it in the end, nobody would have been able to. An accident was kind of the only way it could have gone. It isn't really a failure, the world is saved after all, but it feels like a failure to Frodo. I didn't really pick up on this the first time I read it, but you're right, he isn't free of the ring, because he didn't destroy it. And that's one of the reasons why the final shot of him on the boat where he smiles makes me cry SO much. Because that is his way to finally being free, going into the west. I'm sorry for rambling for so long :D your comment kind of inspired me to just... Put my own thoughts into semi readable paragraphs. The truth is, I don't know shit about Tolkien. And I mostly don't care for what HE thought the correct interpretation of the characters is - he would be pretty pissed about the whole "Frodo and Sam are gay" thing, which I 100% stand behind :D But you've been reading these books for almost as long as I've been alive and I really, really enjoyed hearing your perspective. @@baguettegott3409 It's great to have long in depth discussions with other fans, so the pleasure is mutual. To be honest, I'm even a bit jealous of you - I'd like to be able go back in time and discover Middle-earth again for the first time. The author is very much "dead", that is, the reader is free to make their own interpretations independent of what the author intended. And funnily enough, it was Tolkien's intention that people wouldn't ask what his intentions were, but would construct their own view of the story as suited them and their life. He was very passionate about this topic - and in general he was a very freedom minded person, even a self-described "anarchist". So when I wrote about Tolkien's ponderings on his own characters, I didn't mean you would need to view the story through that lens, or that you should adopt Tolkien's opinions as your own. I just have become very fond of him as a person, because his letters and his life reveal that he grew to be a person with a very gentle, introspective and wise heart. So it interests me personally what further insights he had. They often lead me to new realizations about how to construct multilayered stories, and help me with my own writing. But you don't *need* to know any of them to enjoy his books. Anyhow, I'm glad you've joined this fine fandom. Enjoy your stay!

Elijah Wood tells the entire story with just his face. You could watch all of his scenes muted and not miss a thing about Frodo’s journey thanks to his masterful performance, and the cherry on top is that smile at the end.

Hate to say it, but Tolkien never wrote or said that. It’s an invention of the film. The closest quote from the book is: "This quest may be attempted by the weak with as much hope as the strong. Yet such is oft the course of deeds that move the wheels of the world: small hands do them because they must, while the eyes of the great are elsewhere." - Elrond

And yet there was always a higher purpose to it all. I believe Aragorn himself says so at one point in the Two Towers, that Higher powers guide Frodo. But I suppose that all depends if you are religious or not.

@@mederecord7991, totally. They think he's weak, useless, a coward, "why is he so stupid?" when he gives in to putting on the ring or not throwing it in the fire. I've never talked to them about it before, but when I finally do, I'm going to show them this video and tell them THIS is why Frodo is the hero. Also, I read somewhere that J.R.R. Tolkien wrote Frodo based off of himself and that when asked who the true hero was, he said Sam, which makes total sense to me because Frodo himself would look at all his own failures and say the exact same thing (humility being another one of Frodo's many positive traits). I think I just love Frodo so much because he's so human. He's not perfect, he's not a great fighter, he's technically not even the most resistant to the Ring (Sam is) -- but the fact that he's human enough to be tempted and fall, human enough to spare Gollum because he still sees some humanity in Gollum, and so persistent in resisting the Ring (or at least trying to) makes him so unique and complex as a protagonist, or just as a character in general. And all the personal trauma he takes due to WILLINGLY CHOOSING to bear the Ring, underrated. He literally sacrificed himself to save Middle Earth, received nothing in return (and didn't expect to) except for pain, and was forever changed as a person: there was no going back for him, he knew that, and he chose to bear the Ring anyway. If that doesn't make Frodo a hero, I urge you to reexamine your definition of what you think qualifies a hero.

Emily Danielle technically he is the most resistant to the ring! Sam have it for a couple of hour and almost keep it for himself when Frodo ask him to give him!

@@mederecord7991, I always interpreted it that Sam didn't want to give the Ring back to Frodo more because he was genuinely concerned about what it was doing to him, and not so much because he was tempted by the Ring (though, I mean, it's the Ring, of course Sam would be tempted). But that's just my opinion, and I could be wrong. It's really fun to theorise though. :)

I guess generally people are only looking for the " though looking " hero. But frodo showed heroism in many ways that we fail to notice . It tells a lot about our society

I would agree, but the only reason Frodo got to Mt. Doom and destroyed the Ring is because of Sam. He literally carried Frodo up the volcano. Sorry, but Sam will always be my favorite.

Because this video shows Frodo's pain, he brought the ring to mount doom, defeated evil, defeated temptation, self doubt, and fear.And the whole time he suffered from extreme guilt, thinking he wasn't good enough, even after he destroyed the ring when he was in rivendell and saw sam he immediately got sad, because sam's face reminded him from his guilt. He thinks he failed because he eventually fell to the power of the ring in mount doom. That's why he has to go to the undying lands, to be rid of this self destroying guilt. I, as a Catholic believe that this is the way I will live my life, because I also feel this extreme guilt, and it will only go away when I complete my task on earth and go to heaven.
