Tom Oliver who plays Lou Carpenter was born and grew up in Farnham, Hampshire in the UK. He absconded from the Royal Navy in the 1960s, ended up in Australia and never left. The character of Lou Carpenter is based on Sid James from the Carry On Films - hence the laugh at 1:56.
Yeah it remained so popular because these early episodes made such an big impression..without being too cheesy, they really did have the perfect blend of humor and drama which is unfortunately something they lost the ability to do in the later years..
2007 had mixed results, The Aussies weren't buying it but we were into it. I'd say things last got a bit iffy/so-so around 2009-12 but recovered from 2013, and have been pretty much stable with the odd see-saw moment.
1:59 the very 1st time we saw Lou and heard his iconic laugh. Jelly Belly and Lou became firm friends later on . You could see Tom Oliver laughing a bit at 35:39 when Ian Smith started to get angry as Jelly Belly then fully lost it at 36:00 after he shouted ''But Madge''. I bet some of those scenes were improvised. You could see Jason Donovan trying not to laugh.
But they later became good friends and still had silly arguments from time to time. It was funny when Harold got drunk and called Lou a ''kidney thief''
The combination of good writing good acting with the exactly the right blend of humour and drama made Neighbours a classic once as shown here. Should have been axed many years before now. Thank goodness it has finally been laid to rest !
@digitalmediafan Well I think you'll find that myself and everyone else completely disagree with you, axing Neighbours is a huge mistake and for that it puts you in the minority.
@digitalmediafan I'm not talking about that, I'm talking about how such an icon Neighbours is for both Australia and the UK, and what you said about it being axed well nobody is going to agree with you, if you look at the reaction on twitter you'll find that so many people like me are devastated to see it go, so if I were you I would think very carefully before coming to conclusions.
@@meridian2000 yes of course it's an icon but if Ch5 don't want to fund production costs and no one else does that's it I'm afraid. I hope Neighbours gets resurrected...you never know
Yeah, at the end it was full of woke BS. Transsexuals, lesbian couples, gay couples - all in one tiny Aussie cul de sac. It was just ticking woke boxes by the end.
So glad Harold had the last word. This video started with Madge telling Harold that she had been dating another man while she was away as if it was no big deal.
Tom was obviouslly channelling Jack from Number 96 when he started playing Lou. I'm glad they toned him down and made him a more sympathetic character but not without his charm.
@@nebularain3338 Thing is when you're a guest you can be ott as you like but they eventually have to tone down certains aspects of a character (happened with Angie, Janelle and the like)
These 3 made the show for me!! My mum's ex husband is/was the spitting image of Lou 😳 Will Lou be in the finale?? I've heard the ghost of Madge is making an appearance
I was surprised Tom Oliver wasn't in the final episode. He retired from acting when he was diagnosed with dementia. He's 84. Also they didn't bring Jim Robinson/Alan Dale back as a ghost too.
Remember when lou was in the abba film in the late 70s about touring Australia some sort of roadie I think. Pauls still as bossy after all these years.
And that's how harold and lou became friends in neighbors because there is lou place and harold's cafe that's why those two places altogether where named straight after those two people
Harold could walk in and find Madge taking it up the bunger from Lou and all Harold would do is politely object and offer to make them a cuppa. Pathetic!
I just seen the best acting in neighbours boucer doing tricks for mrs mangle he could teach the rest of the cast a thing or two the animals in the show always out act rhe cast

Love Neighbours, but this is actually appalling to watch, the writers were mocking Harold (and anyone who gets bullied) as much as Lou is mocking him in the script. Then, when Harold finally stands up for himself no one supports him, not even his fiancé. It's really good that attitudes have changed since these victim-blaming old days.
Mrs Mangel was English but the rest are Aussie. Anne Haddy was from Quorn, SA. Harold is from Victoria I think but occasionally sounds almost British. Anne Charleston is Aussie but pretends to be Irish in some interviews for some reason.
Why would you think they’re all Brits? Vivean Grey yes, but none of the others are British. Is it customary that Brits try to claim as many celebrities as possible?
Television in general now is terrible, not just the newer episodes of this. Its far too looks orientated so you end up with alot of talentless actors. And this has been going on for a long time now, but not only this, we have the woke inclusion to deal with as well.
Lou was a bully but Harold did himself no favours. He was the one who kept antagonising Lou. If he was civil instead of confrontational when they first met, things would have been different.
