After a few weeks of playing about with ‪@Baphometrix‬' "Clip to Zero" strategy and now feeling a bit more comfortable with it, I show you how I have incorporated it in to my everyday workflow within Cubase.

Makes sense to get on it A.S.AP like you have done, then EQ as in subtractive to fit all the sounds with panning and then move onto additive etc in the mixing stage. Hey what ever floats ones boat, what suits. ENJOY.

Hey man found you yesterday, really like your channel! I've got a question, so when setting it up like this, are you then in the mixing stage lowering the volume with the main faders again (lets say for Kickdrum -7dbfs), in order to achieve the needed headroom? I don't understand this part yet. Also would it be possible just to use the Gain Volume on the Cubase EQ instead of the Newfangled plugin? Thanks!

Do you set the DAW faders at 0 and then use the output of saturate to get the balance of all the instruments or do you use the DAW faders to balance them.
@Tutorial_ism
@Tutorial_ism 2 года назад
You can use either. Just keep the Kick at zero and balance everything else against that - just remember that this is not mixing, this is just getting stuff in the ball park whilst you are producing!

Great video man! Came from Baphy as well - Question: Since you have kick to 0 and all the rest ballanced against that , isn't your master at least some dbs over 0? How do you handle this? Move down master fader?
@Tutorial_ism
@Tutorial_ism 2 года назад
I have a clipper on every bus including the master so nothing goes above zero and I dont have to touch the master fader. Baphy will be explaining mixing with buses pretty soon!

@ELLIOT8209
@ELLIOT8209 2 года назад
@@gangsterdistrict1154 not really. The kick is hitting zero on the input of Saturate and then gain staged on the output of Saturate. I think he put his to minus 6db. Other sounds like pads and keys are going to be gain staged to lower db levels.
@tdwl2802
@tdwl2802 Год назад
@@gangsterdistrict1154 it's just a matter of bussing everything with clippers and then sending those busses to another less aggressive clipper. You can then use a limiter to give it that slight push after
@travonsinclair9135
@travonsinclair9135 2 года назад
Craig, from what I understand from Baphometrix, a limiter applies to the tonal elements in the mix, not a clipper. Also not always the same clipper but depending on the elements you have in the mix you choose between the two that he presented. Regarding the structure of the buses, maybe I can understand the logic in which you made them, but if I choose for example the "kick + bass" bus, it seems to me almost a creative choice. Have you always used such a bus or do you simply have it in your template in case you want to apply it? Even "Instrument Bus" in which you once again put the drums and bass together with the synths seems a bit forced to me. I can clearly understand that it's about cascading clipping but it seems a bit too much or maybe I didn't understand this method well enough. All I wanted to say is that if I use this logic I can create a bunch of buses depending on other affinities that certain sounds in the mix can have with each other and in this way they reach a huge bus system. I know what I'm saying is exaggerated but I wanted to emphasize the idea a bit.
@Tutorial_ism
@Tutorial_ism 2 года назад
The reason I use NF Saturate over a limiter or a more traditional clipper is just because I like the way it sounds on pretty much everything. There is no deep science behind my reasoning. With regards to my bussing, I have always had my Kick and Bass bus as well as my top level busses, but I have added a few lower level busses since implementing CTZ on my workflow. Again, no real science behind it other than this signal flow is what makes sense to me. I guess the main purpose of the video was just to show how I have married Baphometrix’s teachings in to my own personal workflow
@JohnDoe-yr5tg
@JohnDoe-yr5tg 2 года назад
So if everything is hitting zero on saturate and the master is in the red ? Do you have to adjust the pre gain in the or do you just limit the master
@Tutorial_ism
@Tutorial_ism 2 года назад
No, nothing will ever be in the red as I have a clipper at every stage in the bussing structure. For this to make sense you have to watch Baphometrix full course on Clip To Zero over on her channel. This video was just showing a way to implement the technique during production so that your track will be ready to mix in the way that she teaches over there
@JohnDoe-yr5tg

@@Tutorial_ism yes I must have made an error I was trying to follow your template with how I work so I must have set something incorrect as I have been following the Clip to zero technique i might have the reference track setup wrong as yes it should not go over it would have been greater if you shared your template either on here or on Patreon which I’ve yet to join do you share these in there everyone works differently but easier to adjust then follow thanks again

@@Tutorial_ism Great. As a transition to mixing it would be interesting how you would take the standings of the project at the end of this video (i.e. all clipped to zero) into a new mixing project where some analogue emulating plugins are used (i.e. gain staging is needed to meet their sweet spots) and where you again use CTZ.
@gangsterdistrict1154
@gangsterdistrict1154 2 года назад
why you summed kick and bass in one buss??
@Tutorial_ism
@Tutorial_ism 2 года назад
Just personal preference. For my style of music the kick and bass are the driving force, so once I have them working nicely together I then just consider them as one thing
@gangsterdistrict1154
@gangsterdistrict1154 2 года назад
@@Tutorial_ism yeah they are driving force indeed.. but in same buss arent they be clashing someway even if side chained? Because once bass routed to same kick buss then the clipper will cause sub harmonics and it will overlap kicks
@Tutorial_ism
@Tutorial_ism 2 года назад
That’s another reason why I have them together. The aim is to have barely any, if any at all, clipping on the kick and bass group. And because I can monitor how much clipping is happening right here, I don’t have to worry about them so much when they sum together with other things, later down the chain
