bats have been made out of all types of wood over the years. Ash, hickory, maple, today they use birch as well. Maple started becoming popular in the early 2000's (before the Ash borer made its way into the US) its just a coincidence. Maple is about 20% more dense than ash so the players feel they can hit the ball further with a maple bat.

That just sounds like a bad excuse. I am going to plant some ash trees cause they are going to be really expensive soon.

haywood jeblome takes 80 years for a tree to grow before it can be harvested to make a bat. Plus even with the bug killing the trees maple bats are still more expensive than ash.

The tree only has to be 2 or 3 inches so it should be more like 5 years. Then they are long so you can get 5 or 10 bats with each tree.

haywood jeblome I work for a bat company sick won't get into the entire reasons why you are wrong. Ash trees you need 7 to 9 grain lines per square inch and since a barrel of a bat is roughly 2.5 inches in diameter that is roughly 20 years of growth. Plus bat companies only use the wood from the outer part of the tree. They don't use the wood in the center. You can't make a good bat from the center rings (older rings)

He is an idiot. I worked for the company for 6 years until they got rid of us because of Covid even though they got multiple rounds of PPP money. Company has been going downhill since he took over in 2000/2001. Hillerichs all hate baseball. Only thing that makes that company money now is the museum. They make a horrible bat and only can fall back on their history which is amazing, but at this point the company doesnt have a bright future if John is going to be sticking around. I have stories about how messed up that family is I could write a book

To play Devil's Advocate, with the advent of different polymers or alloys (Especially in recent years), it may have seemed like a reasonable question. I think it may have been better worded as "Why are they STILL made of wood?" Which I think he does go on to clarify, if I'm not mistaken.
