You have to explain to Americans what the "Eurovision Song Contest" is - most won't know ;)
@rvelezbarreda
@rvelezbarreda 3 года назад
@@fraupaffhausen The Eurovision Song Contest, often known simply as Eurovision, is an international song competition organised annually by the European Broadcasting Union which features participants representing primarily European countries. Each participating country submits an original song to be performed on live television and radio, transmitted to national broadcasters via the Eurovision and Euroradio networks, with competing countries then casting votes for the other countries' songs to determine a winner. Traditionally held in the country which won the preceding year's event, the contest provides an opportunity to promote the host country and city as a tourist destination.

@@rvelezbarreda Hi Roberto, that's a great explanation for Americans! I wish it was more visible, not hidden in a sub-thread. As for me, I know Eurovision pretty well, since I was born in Germany in 1965 - which means I have watched this broadcast since the 70s ;) I suggested to the OP @corvus13 that they should explain to Americans what Eurovision is, it wasn't a question, but thanks anyway!

The phrase: I have met my Waterloo, or He or She has met their Waterloo has since the 19th Century meant you surrender. Its not about the battle, its about inevitable surrender. So the song was about her falling for an man and surrendering to the man. Its the start of the relationship the song is about. I met him, could not resist him, surrendered to him..... that is the arc of the song

Waterloo was inevitable. Napoleon couldn't continue without facing off against the British at some point, so when they talk about meeting your Waterloo, it's about finally facing something that you have been avoiding, knowing you couldn't avoid it forever. While the woman portrayed in the sung loses the battle, she gains the love of the man, so she "wins when I lose". It's so upbeat because she is happy that he won past her defences and made her surrender. It's the classic playing hard to get story.

There is a saying in the UK that when someone is facing/meets their waterloo they are about to encounter one's ultimate obstacle and to be defeated by it: “After beating dozens of challengers, the champion finally met his Waterloo.” It does owe its origins to the battle.

The song is a paean to those who swear they will never let themselves fall in love, but ultimately they are defeated, because as we all should know, love is not democratic. The heart wants what it wants. Abba were a class act and made some of the greatest pop music ever made, whether one liked that kind of music or not, it cannot be denied. At one time they were Sweden's top export, even beating Saab, Sweden's top automobile manufacturer. Hilarious watching you go all girly as you checked out the girl's fashions. Shine on India.

The star-shaped guitar and platforms mark this as the final peak of a style known as Glam Rock (purveyed in Britain by Marc Bolan and David Bowie, but which also spread to groups as various as Led Zeppelin, Kiss and The Osmonds). In our age that would probably mark you for life, but musical trends and imagery moved on pretty quick and they had to adapt to later developments such as the disco boom and even early eighties cold wave synths.

Abba's back catalogue of singles is so well known in the UK it's like mother's milk, but this is the one that really kicked it off. As a pop group in an age of the great pop/rock devide (serious artists did albums), they appeared to lack credibility, but their material was every bit as strong melodically and lyrically as those who were perhaps more highly acclaimed at the time.

Meeting your "Waterloo" is an old saying that means "surrendering". In this case she is surrendering to the advances of her "guy". So not literally a war. Just the eternal "battle/struggle" of LOVE. Thanks for reacting to ABBA. They sure knew how to write and sing catchy songs.
@dsmdgold

Napoleon was defeated twice. The first time he was forced to abdicate as Emperor of France, and exiled to Elba, a small island in the Mediterranean. After a few months, he escaped and returned to France with about 700 men. He marched on Paris and army units sent to intercept him joined his cause. This started a period called The Hundred Days. Within a few months he gathered an army of 200,000 men. He was defeated by allied forces at the Battle of Waterloo. This time he was exiled to Saint Helena in the South Atlantic, which is one of the most remote islands in the world. He died there. The phrase "to meet one's Waterloo" was used for a long time to mean to meet an ultimate obstacle and be defeated by it. The song is using this metaphor. The singer has resisted love, but has been overcome by it. They have met their Waterloo.
