This was my introduction to Prince many years ago. The word "genius" gets thrown around way too easily today, but this man truly was one. He is missed every single day and there will truly never be another.
Genuis, Icon, Legend and Canon get thrown around way too freely now. Yeah, makes me sound like a second away from being dust, but my black girl ass does not care😉
The extended version of this has a lot more in it like the "people call me rude, I wish we all were nude," part, etc., at least I think I'm remembering that part right and it goes on forever..lol. LOVE Prince!
This is yet another great Prince song. Prince is easily one of my Top 5 favorite artists of all-time. He has lots of awesome songs that weren’t even released as singles. Prince was a generational Cultural Icon.
Yes, please! Guitar hero level Prince. His solo is the only reason millions & millions of people watch & talk about that performance. Everyone else on stage is an icon, too, it's wonderful, but Prince took it to outer space greatness.
It's a great musical performance, but I really dislike it. That was supposed to be a tribute to George Harrison and Prince made it all about himself because he felt his guitar playing was snubbed by the musical establishment. I'm a huge Prince fan but that was in poor taste IMO.
He often threw away his guitars and basses. At the R'n'R Hall of Fame a crew member grabbed it. Check out the “Director's Cut: ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ - Prince, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne & Dhani Harrison”.
@@Verlopil Prince's philosophy was: if you can't do something new, original or different with other people's songs, don't play them. And thanks to Prince, that tribute went from boring to memorable. The original soloist, Eric Clapton, had nothing to say about it, so... On the contrary, Clapton was a fan of Prince. When P. passed away, EC said, “I'm so sad about the death of Prince, he was a true genius, and a huge inspiration for me, in a very real way, /// In the '80s, I was out on the road in a massive downward spiral with drink and drugs, I saw Purple Rain in a cinema in Canada, I had no idea who he was, it was like a bolt of lightning!”. By the way, Prince discovered the Beatles late, in the Purple Rain era, and became an absolute fan; you can feel that on the album “Around The World In A Day”.

One of the most talented Musicians ever. Sing, Write, produce, and plays all of his instruments. He is the man of Controversy - he pushed envelops is pop culture for sure !!
One of my favorite Prince songs; released in 1981 before he became one of the biggest acts on the planet. "Little Red Corvette" made him a hit with the mainstream MTV audience in 1983, then "Purple Rain" (the movie AND album) made him a superstar the next year.
This came out when Prince was still mostly a mystery to most people. All those questions he asked were real questions had about him at the time. Also the way his music would go from funk to rock to places in between and outside both, you could never put him into a box!
@@Skeezer66 Dear Skeezer: I wasn't commenting on the fickle nature of "some" people who, (at the time) were disturbed by the possibility of someone they admired not being heterosexual. I felt that it was shallow-minded then; and,I feel that it's shallow-minded now. I was speaking on the reality of radio stations being very much segregated in 1978, when Prince's first album appeared. White America, (there...I said it) were very much unaware of Prince, because he was ONLY being played on non-white stations. And,(at that time) White America STILL lagged behind Blacks in terms of what was topical, culturally cutting-edge; and..."cool". "Coolness" does not come from the center of a culture. It comes from the margins; the outskirts; the "borders", That's why something that is new, risky and perhaps, "dangerous" is STILL considered "edgy". Black culture was always considered "edgy"--because it contained elements of risk. This was true with the blues, jazz, rock, hip-hop--and whatever else the future may bring. So no...my commentary, (unlike yours) had nothing to do with Prince's perceived sexuality. It had everything to do with White America's ever present desire, (even now!!) to exercise as much control as it possibly can; over any and everything. No matter what the cost; to "them"; or...to "us". (I apologize for the rant; but, I need to be clear about what I'm commenting on.)
@@possumslim5542 I understand the need to rant, but let me be clear, all the controversies, music, race, and serial preferences, were all shared in the black community. We knew part of the music, but many people wondered if he was biracial (and his parents in Purple Rain didn't help), everything about him was a mystery, just as I'm sure he liked it. Little Red Corvette was his rock station breakthrough but was mostly ignored by black radio. He was a wizard that wanted to be what he was, totally unique.
He didn't say that. That's a quote, that Jimi Hendrix was supposed to have said about Rory Gallagher, or Billy Gibbons. I doubt he actually said it. Eric Clapton was asked by a television reporter, who did he find interesting in modern music, and Eric replied that if all of the musicians in the world quit, except Prince, the purple bad ass, could easily carry the load without them. For a time, Prince was Eric's favorite musician.
I regret not seeing Prince in concert. See your favorites while you can because you NEVER know if you will have another opportunity. A true talent and an extremely gifted musician. "When Doves Cry" is one of the best songs ever.
Me too. I had my chance in 1985, during his Purple Rain tour when he was the hottest artist in music, following the release of the film. A school mate went and told me how it was the most amazing concert he ever attended!!! I was so jealous!!! Still am. A moment lost in time and a lesson learned!
Y'all need to see Prince shredding guitar on the live Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction of George Harrison playing on While My Guitar Gently Weeps. He steals the show!
Yes please do Prince “Delirious.” Some of his earlier stuff. If Jay wants to freak out watch the Michael Keaton Batman movie from 1989 then after watch the Prince video “Batdance.” He is a musical genius and that video is just awesome! By the way the 1989 Batman movie has nothing but Prince music in it. He basically did the entire Batman movie soundtrack.
😆 😂 ... When I was in high school, the teachers let us play music during class. On a "boom box". ASo someone brought this tape in, and Darling Nikki came on, and we waited ....😲 😲 .. less than a minute into the song, she was running across the gym too!!! 😆 😆 😆 😆 😅😅
Not only guitar, Prince was known to play at least 27 different instruments with the same high level skill and creativity. He was a musical genius, literally.
I agree Jordan, those lyrics are profound. His "1999" and "Purple Rain" albums have zero skips. Each song is just pure brilliance. Wait until you guys watch "Purple Rain" the movie. You will be awestruck at his talent.
Y’all, I almost broke my neck clicking on this😂 he was our GenX representative.he was our leader, preacher, teacher, guru…and our first sex Ed teacher…and we didn’t care what he identified as, we’d follow him wherever he went! Him and all his musical chirren! From Jimmy jam, and Terry Lewis, to New Edition😂 My mama had this record. I had the bside…and no I didn’t let her listen to it.😂
This whole Controversy album is 🔥 I remember my older sister had this one back when I was in middle school. His earlier stuff was sooo good and authentic. Edit: Jay, the keyboard player you mentioned was the skilled and talented Doctor Fink
@@jacqueline4514 Was it? I remember "Do me, Baby" and "Head". Lol. I am pretty sure those 2 were out before "I Wanna Be Your Lover". Do you know those? I'm surprised I have not seen one comment about those.
Prince definitely is one of the best guitar player of all times. To get a little snip of his skills, you should listen to his solo in "While My Guitar Gently Weeps”. It is amazing!
I ADORE Prince. Since the late-70s. Saw him 5 times here in NYC. Electrifying, brilliant, showstopping. Check out his Super Bowl 1/2-Time Show outdoors in Miami in the pouring rain. 2007. Only time it rained in its history. He played all of his hits in heels. When he performed Purple Rain, the heavens poured open. They wanted him to stop due to safety. He refused and brought everyone together. Magical and transcendent. A genius. There will NEVER be another Prince. May he RIP. 💜💜💜
That "doctor" is known as 'Dr. Fink', and the legendary keyboardest of the Revolution, Princes's backup band for many years. Known for dressing in scrubs, he also was had a lot of success working with other artists producing, and songwriting.
Watch when Prince was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame the Same time they were Also Honoring George Harrison of the Beatles - The Best Group of Musicians making the Guitars Cry 🎉 Beautiful
We're getting early Prince from 1981, which was 2 years before Little Red Corvette, 3 years b4 Purple Rain and 4 years b4 "Raspberry Beret." And 3 years AFTER his debut album "For You" (1978).
This song was released in 1981 when Prince was still establishing himself in the music world, becoming more noticed by the public and the media, but not yet a superstar. That would come a few years later with Purple Rain. The lyrics are indeed a dig at the media and his critics, who he grew tired of asking him personal questions about such things as his sexuality, religious beliefs and racial background. As a consequence he shunned the press for several years, refused to give interviews or reveal private information. Being out of the spotlight so much offstage may have actually helped his career as it built a mystique about his character and he became an enigmatic recluse dedicated to his music avoiding the glare of public attention unlike most other superstars.
I remember the first time hearing prince in the late 70’s/early 80’s as a teenager. All my friends were blown away at how good and different sounding/looking he was. Couldn’t get enough. Ironically, many people that probably never heard his music wanted to ban or censor him, since he was pushing envelopes that people didn’t want opened. We knew genius when we first heard him, and now looking back, time has proven those early naysayers wrong and Prince right as a true creative trendsetting artist. RIP PRINCE
Kind of shook you didn’t pick “Kiss” by Prince here. Probably my favorite song of his it really exemplifies how great pop was in the 80s, as even a magic artist like Prince wrote a song so “80s catchy”. And to this day, still as catchy!
The way amber reacts to the signature prince screech or growl, I I imagine she will be blown away by kiss, the part where prince huts the real high note.
Yessss!!! I loved Prince so much. I get sad when I reminisce about the great times and music that he gave us. I wish y'all would've done the extended version...so, so good! RIP Prince Rogers Nelson 💜🕊️
Prince was a brilliant musician and performer - totally self-aware in his lyrics, sound and lifestyle. And, most of all, confident and proud of who he was - no matter what anyone else might think or say. This is like his statement of how he feels about all the gossip and questioning. Prince was simply who he was, strong and proud. RIP.
Still amazing at age 20(ish) that he played every instrument of that song, wrote it, sang it on his own. He might've had a sound engineer at that point, but basically, it was him in a recording studio 24/7 churning out songs - the ENTIRE songs.
I love Prince in all his genius. He could make you dance and he could make you think at the same time like in this song. Also check out his songs, "Pop Life" and "Sign of the Times", both songs are amazing and they make you think about real life issues! 💖💖
that's the song that started my relationship with Prince! I knew about funk but no clue about new wave, Prince has been such a factor in me opening myself to new genres and explore
The first song I heard by this “Mozart” was “It’s Gonna Be Lonely”…I was hooked. His guitar skills here on “Controversy”…the progression and production- only gave us a peek at what was to come. A modern day “Sage”💜🕊️
Yes, his keyboard player went by the name, The Doctor. He dress that way ( in some form) every video. He is 1 of the members that followed Prince with all his bands. When it was just Prince like this band, the Revolution (Purple Rain era) NPG New Power Generation. The Doctor was with him through out all the different bands.
Yes, the keyboard player is called Dr. Fink (real name Matt Fink) and he always wears a doctor’s uniform - still to this day whenever he turns up at Prince-related things (which always makes me chuckle).
Y’all should do Prince show sampling a swathe of his music plucked from his albums from “For You” (1978) on through the 80s, 90s & beyond. He’s worth the listen.
Prince is an incredible guitarist. Didn't grow up a fan but, totally respected his talent. When I saw him live, his playing was really the feature of the show; played several extended solos. Feel very lucky to have seen him, cuz he died soon after that. If you haven't seen him on the George Harrison concert, you've gotta check it out: "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."
Yay more Prince!! I'd like to recommend the song and video for "7". His wife is with him in the video (okay they weren't married yet but she eventually became his wife) It has a great beat and a catchy chorus. I still can't get it out of my head all these years later lol. ☮️
Thank you, guys! This is my favorite Prince song! Well, I have many favorites from Prince. I am aMinnesotan and this is one of his songs that was released before he became a worldwide phenomenon. ❤❤❤
Prince is top tier musical genius!! PLEASE consider his sultry-funk hit with miss Sheila E - "EROTIC CITY" - the Long Version - it's nasty and y'all will love it!! Great beat, sexy lyrics - to which were played "as is" on the radio because Prince sang a certain word one way and Sheila E. insisted on saying "funk" instead - so with the lyrics overlayed it's hard to distinguish just what they were saying - but we knew what they were saying... LOL - keep smiling y'all!!
If you really want to see how good Prince was as a guitarist, check out the tribute concert to the late George Harrison with Jeff Lynne (ELO), Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Dhani Harrison (George's son and mini me) and Prince for My Guitar Gently Weeps. Prince KILLS the guitar solo at the end of the song and that's his only job during that song is that solo.
