Intro Music: "Rhythm is a Dancer" by SNAP! • Video
Welcome to Lovecraft Country, the channel for video games and other media derived from the Cosmic Horror genre popularized by H.P. #Lovecraft. # Cultist Simulator, an indie virtual card game, places you as a Lovecraftian antagonist attempting to harness ancient powers while avoiding death, madness, imprisonment, and multiple fates worse than death. Due to the steep, and sometimes frustrating, learning curve for the game I put together a few videos for tips and strategies to help you understand the game's basics without crashing and burning repeatedly.

So glad that this is here! The Dancer is tied with the Ghoul as my favorite DLC and Grail, moth and heart are definitely the principles I like the most. Plus I just love the idea of working in this supernatural cabaret in the 1920s it's something really cool and unique. Incidentally as a former ballet dancer who had to give it up because of chronic illness I must say; you are spot on when you talk about how much of physical effort and fitness is required to be a dancer. and although it keeps you very healthy and some aspects it also really destroys your body in other ways. I basically have the joints of someone 20 years older than myself 😂

As a veteran, you have my sympathies. I too am painfully aware of the effects of overclocking the body. The rush of earlier efforts is paid for in our later years. My limited knowledge of professional dancing comes from a writer I knew back in the day. Her parents started her on the path to professional ballet dancing as a child but when she got older she chose a different path into music and literature. She kept in practice though and applied the footing, balance and rhythm she'd learned to martial arts and blades. She also pursued ecstatic dance as a mystical practice. As for the Ecdysis Club, a supernatural cabaret at the intersection of the mundane and magical operating in one of the most turbulent times in human history is such a rich setting. I so want fan-fic of this. :)

I'm continuing the The Dancer in DLC and one of the subscriber voting option for the next series will be a full Latern run from Aspirant start to end of Apostle. If you follow me on Twitch and activate notifications you might be lucky enough to catch me recording one live. No regular schedule yet as I tend to record them whenever I can.

Don't know if you'll get to that in the later run, but what I like to do with the dancer in the beginning is getting both Benefactors because they will give a ton of money until they want to marry you. Of course, if you deny the proposal they'll lose interest BUT I always make around 40-50 funds that way which obviously helps a lot in the beginning.

Due to the RNG nature of gaining a Patron card, I usually don't rely on it coming up early. The Dancer run usually provides enough cash flow with its employment opportunities so I don't have money issues comparable to other runs. One of the reasons I am holding onto the Gaiety Theater card in this run is that I hope a Patron card will pop up so I can explain the Patron gameplay dynamics.

You say the Aspirant's funds are bad, but I haven't had an issue with them in my run. Granted, that may just be because my real life worship of the occult deity, RNGesus, caused Mr. Alden to retire like 30 minutes in.

What sacrifices are you making to RNGJesus?

I always saw the Dancer's initial work to be more of the 'tease' style, rather than the sexwork-included type. And having an admirer that would give a gift would be fairly normal, especially a repeat-viewer. Even if something like a necklace, a ring, a painting, etc. Also Agdistis is apparently a god-figure of Phrygian origin, with both genitalia and a god of the wild and uncontrolled nature itself. Which fits quite well with The Heart, since Nature is Life Splendor, even in Winter, nature still persists and come spring it blooms anew. Also Also.... the club name.... Ecdysis... it's the name for what arthropods do when moulting their exoskeletons.... quite literally shedding their cocoon or shed the shell that stops them from growing, from transforming. Gives quite the ideas when you think of a club with that name designed around a dancer transforming themselves and their dance beyond what they and it was before.

The line between a dancer and erotic worker, which would be a better title, is blurry. Especially in a corrupt age such as 1930s London among the entitled elite. The Dancer's mundane ending is marrying their patron/matron which is not portrayed as love match but as a means of securing a comfortable life for the Dancer and their children. Thus the Dancer shows the willingness to trade access to their body - the only capital she really has - in exchange for material gain. Whether the Dancer only teases until married or establishes themselves as a lover beforehand is up to the player's interpretation. Keep in mind, Sulochana sells access to the Dancer's rituals of transformation to wealthy voyeurs which could be seen as giving access to a more intimate act than sexual intercourse for money. Agdistis sounds like a variant of Dionysus, who of course was god of desire, dance, transformation and madness. Which fits well with the Dancer's themes. You are right about the club's name though I can see its similarity with ekstasis - the divine madness granted by Dioysus and his brethren - as significant. Like I said before there's a lot of word play in occult literature.

@@FantasticWorlds True, I just meant more the initial job before the Ecdysis club seemed a more 'norm' type thing.
@FantasticWorlds
@FantasticWorlds Год назад
Ah. Yes. Likely a standard chorus girl job until Sulochana "discovered" her.
@kinagrill

@@FantasticWorlds yup. I mean sure it might be more of a bourlesque type dancing job at the first place, but that dun mean it's a prostitution-job on the side. It does sound a bit more classy tho by comparison. even Sulochana's place sounds more like a high class 'hush hush' place with all manners of alluring performance.

A while back I and another writer were doing research for the underworld of this time and private clubs of London were and are still in some cases fronts for more illicit activity such as prostitution, gambling, drug running, smuggling of exotic items etc. The higher class establishment, the less likely the authorities would ever pay attention as they were usually involved. Think Rick's club from "Casablanca" where the chief of police is involved in the club's illegal gambling ring and gets a cut as his "winnings". Sulochana is hiding the occult elements beneath that layer, with her illegal activity allowing her to get away with things like obtaining the drugs necessary for mystic altered states of consciousness, public ritual self-mutilation hidden as forms of extreme entertainment for the jaded upper class and in the end quietly disposing of the Dancer's former mortal body without a fuss.

@@FantasticWorlds Awesome! I know you posted this video months ago and I'm still catching up on your content. I just wanted to say that I learned so much watching your videos. I finished my first game last week! Grail victory. I bought the game at launch and didn't get far into it because I had no idea what I was doing, but now I'm starting my second playthrough as a Dancer. Thanks again!
